On the other hand, that is a genuine photo of Diablo (except the bald patch!).

As I said in the original posting (on the US Infogrames forum), it will teach him not to send me a pic of himself with the top of his head missing, and saying "I'm sure you can do something with it."

I think I'm fairly human, sorry to dissapoint!

Minos
05-02-2002, 14:02
No one is questioning your humanity, Alex! It's the fear that an embryonic alien lifeform is growing inside you that worries us... :eekblue:

It's when it erupts from your body – there's always such a mess! Then loads of people with great big guns start running around shooting at the walls and furniture, as if things weren't bad enough already, what with all the blood and body parts lying around everywhere...

Go for an ultrasound scan while you are still able to! :wierdblu:

alexp
05-02-2002, 14:21
like the "kill me, kill me" bit in Aliens you mean?

Nah, I'd know about that. Only thing I've got growing inside me at the moment is "problems" from the mega-hot curry I had on Saturday night...

An alien vindaloo? :eekblue:

Minos
05-02-2002, 14:50
You HAVE been watching Red Dwarf... the episode where they accidentally create a curry monster! The crew find a DNA machine which can create a living creature from a DNA sample... they put a chicken vindaloo in, and pay the penalty! :eekblue:

They are finally able to destroy it with some cans of lager – "Lager – the only thing that can kill a curry!"

Lara is the real thing :eekblue:

Minos
15-02-2002, 00:47
At last! A genuine philospher!

Lara Croft IS real... she is real because once a person believes in her she acquires a subjective reality in that person's perception of the world.

It's a reversal of the Zen philosphy that questions whether something could be said to exist if no one knew about it.

By this logic Di would cease to exist if we all forgot about him... :grntngue:

Take this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow --
You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.

I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand --
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep -- while I weep!
O God! can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O God! can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?.

False modesty? It's rather hard to counter an accusation of arrogance... :rollani:

But on the subject of The Matrix, the thing that immediately struck me was that they had no way of knowing whether the 'real world' they were trying to escape to was 'real' or just another simulation...

And I don't know what kind of robot would come up with a simulation of a world with people like us in it... they must be rather strange robots... :eekblue:

HA! That's it! Another memory! And a good reason for keeping a diary:

'So we talked till last orders, mainly recalling New Year’s Eve and the strange things that went on. J*** couldn’t remember many things though, eg bursting in with his hands tied behind his back shouting "E***’s been whipping me!" '

J*** (not his real name) is now the editor of the local newspaper...

:lolblue: Excellent one! :lolblue:

A really odd thought just came to my mind... :confblue: I see madness as the explosion of concentrated experience, fears, hopes, thoughts and desires...with all these talks of whips and bondage and deadly vegetables, I really wonder what I would be like if I ever went mad and regurgitated what I've been absorbing in the past few months around here... :confblue: Oh, help me, the carrots are whipping me! :grntngue:

Well, one thing's for sure: you'd be able to find a psychiatrist willing to take your money to listen to you... :rollani:

...or perhaps you already have been indulging in a form of catharsis – you really ARE Di, aren't you? You created the character in order to provide an outlet for all your pent-up emotions... I never really believed there could actually be anyone like Di in real life. How could there be such a perverted person? :confblue:

And now it's come to sending yourself emails asking to be whipped! You need help! Expensive help!

Di – or rather his 'incarnation' on this forum – is the result of your hidden, repressed thoughts and desires. And, as you well know, it's no good saying you don't have any repressed thoughts, denial merely confirms their existence!

Erk! A thought... perhaps YOU (and therefore also Di) are creations of MY subconscious... :eekblue:

I am the only actual person alive on the earth, everyone else is part of a complex pshycologial experiment for a purpose I haven't worked out yet.

I'm sure that there are a number of innocent drones put in place to make up the numbers, and to disguise the actual experimenter's..... but I know you see, why else do I keep seeing the same strangers on the train every day... They're obviously following me and taking notes.....

The late Robert Heinlein loved this theme.

In The Unpleasant Profession of Jonathon Hoag the eponymous character approaches a private detective disturbed by the fact that he comes back from work every day but can never remember what he actually does. He becomes obsessed with the idea that he is doing something illegal, and that various suspicious characters are monitoring him. It turns out he is right of course, though a little too complicated to relate here: in essence, the world had been created as a sort of art project, and Jonathon Hoag, though he couldn't remember it at night, had been sent to Earth as an art critic, to evaluate its aesthetic qualities...

I won't spoil it by telling you his other ones, which were generally rather shorter, but which certainly kept you on your toes.

Understudy
20-02-2002, 18:48
And there was me actually begining to believe that I'd had an original thought....

Doesn't mean its not true though, it must be possible that I'm special

Anyway..... Back to listening to the voices in my head.....

Must look up this Robert Heinlein fella, sounds like a good read.

Oh! :eekblue: He wrote Starship Troopers! I feel all illiterate and uneducated.

Well there's a wealth of Science Fiction to get started on..

Minos
21-02-2002, 02:03
You did come up with the idea yourself – just because others have thought of it before doesn't devalue that; all it means is that you weren't the first. It shows you have an inquisitive, analytical mind, and question things rather than just taking ideas spoon-fed, as most people do.

Solipsism – the concept that we cannot believe in the objective reality of anything, not even our own physical bodies, has been around an awfully long time, since people began to speculate about how real their dreams appeared. Who was to say that their day to day existence was any more real than a dream?

Not a very productive line of thought, but the bread and butter of philosophers! (And novel writers, and film makers...)

As to Robert Heinlein, he started writing back in the forties, and some of his earlier stuff will seem very dated to you now, though it's still very entertaining. If you're into straightforward, exciting stories you should try books like Glory Road or The Puppet Masters. If you fancy a bit of political or religious satire I can strongly recommend his most famous book, Stranger in a Strange Land. It has its weaknesses, and won't have the same impact now that it did when he wrote it (over forty years ago), but it's a damned good read if you like a novel that is thought-provoking as well as entertaining.

tenebra_uk
21-02-2002, 10:05
Oooh, what a nice thread! Now, nothing to do with Science Fiction but since this has now become the book circle, may I recommend Jonathan Coe and in particular his The House of Sleep ;)

The latest one planned (which I'm working on now in fact) is an alleged Easter Egg in the game – a scene featuring Aline and Ed in the 'hidden' bathroom of the Morton family mansion... :yum:

Minos
21-02-2002, 16:07
That's because her pic was on another thread – the one about 'The True Meaning of Friendship,' which was a rushed job for a special occasion (if you remember!).

I'm still waiting for a proper photo of her to use in the 'Behind the Scenes' thread... that one was from a webcam and took a LOT of retouching work before it could be used! I'd rather have a better-quality original if possible – there have been promises but nothing has yet been forthcoming...

Minos
21-02-2002, 16:38
Yes, a bit of rapid editing there! Sorry if I lost you!

Don't worry, Daiz – no rush. I've got to think of a suitable way of incorporating it anyway... I'm running out of fitting backdrops and ideas for the images themselves... hence the rather 'struggling for a new concept' bathroom scene that I'm doing now!

As for Tenebra, true enough! And I still have it... a pity you're wearing dark glasses and have short red hair, but I could still use it of course.

The only real reason for asking for a more up-to-date photo is because there was an insistence by certain persons on only current pictures being supplied... in practice a photo of any member at any age could be used. From my point of view the only real issue is the quality of the image.

Minos
21-02-2002, 16:42
Another one I could include is the one of Di with the body of a sheep – I didn't use it because it has no particular relevance to the 'Behind the Scenes' thread. But I'm sure I could come up with something, however contrived...

'After the Infogrames Office Christmas Party' perhaps...

What a curiously long and rambling discussion!

I don't want to have anything to do with people who talk like this – I need intellectual stimulation! Why aren't you talking about sex more? :confblue:

I'm just reading Silver Metal Lover by Tanith Lee – it reminded me of how you women always saying about not wanting a substitute, and demanding the real thing. The heroine here prefers an android (admittedly a highly gifted one :eekblue: ).

Don't look at me like that! It's not pornographic! Very moving in fact – an examination of human emotions and motivations. She falls in love with it because of her alienation from other humans, and her need for compassion as much as because of its... erm... physical ablities. Reminiscent of that line from Blade Runner "More human than human..."

...somehow it doesn't equate with the male desire for a Lara Croft doll – it's hard to find anything moraly uplifting about that somehow... I think men prefer an inflatable doll because it won't give emotional companionship...

It's all right. I've stopped now... carry on as you were... :bigeye:

My feet are not the only normal things on my body...tse...perhaps we could start to talk about YOUR "normal" body - parts...but it will be very difficult to find any human parallels... :wierdblu:

Apart from the claws and the paws, I'd say I'm pretty normal - possibly needing a hairdresser but that's all

A hairdresser...hm...you got long blonde hair right now, right ?

Before you had short red hair...hmm...what will come next....bald Tenebra ?

:eekblue: I hope not! You're missing some bits: it's been long blond, long mahogany, long copper, long aubergine ( :eekblue: ), short mahogany, short blond, long blond with red highlights and now the highlights are gone it's just blond. Next might be blond with dark brown highlights :grntngue:

You could always shave your head, and buy a load of wigs.... Then you could have several style changes a day.... :coolred:

And no need to get wet when washing your hair.

Yes, but...you need to remove the wig to scratch your head, don't you? :wierdblu: Would look pretty charming in public

Na the trick is to use talcum powder......

bothon the surface of the sKin.... and the fabric of the wig.....

Helps it to stay in place and not itch...;)

Don't worry Di – it's normal for young children to have white or very light-coloured hair, only to have it darken as they grow older.

Even I (brown-haired) had almost white hair as a small child.

Now it's slowly going white again... :confblue:

I've often contemplated the inevitability of getting old, and how I will cope mentally when my body starts to fall apart...

but if I ever catch myself using 'Just for Men' or any hair colouring (except for fancy dress and the like). I'll know its time to die!

If my (admittedly limited) experiences of under thirteen year old girls are anything to go by, they start a lot younger than that!

I know it's all part of wanting to look grown up, but it seems almost sadly ironic that something mainly used to make people look younger is used by girls in their early teens to make themselves look older. Not only do they not need it, they almost always look nicer without it.

God, I am sounding like an old fogey... I was on the point of saying that they never used to do it when I was a lad...

Argh! I did say it! :eekblue:

Yup. The baldie man brush-over is a definite no-no. :lolblue:

At least in the UK at the moment you can shave the rest of your hair off and not have people assume that you're a bigoted racist..

Progress!

Indeed! But whom are we to thank for that? David Beckham? :confblue:

As to the 'loose strands of hair' thing, does anyone remember the sketch in the series Naked Video (I think that's where it was anyway) where Gregor Fisher played the part of just such a character?

I think the idea was later used in an advert for Hamlet cigars – where he kept trying to have his photo taken in an automatic booth. Painfully funny.
