Hi there :)

this is a difficult one for me, I am not allway's able to contribute, but I definately, like to see new people on the forum.

I like the warm feelings, of friendship, the are not allway's evident from reading the content of the post's.

And I think myself luck to be part of this community.:D

Personally I like to hear people moaning about non-existent webisodes the best. :rollani:

Oh, some of you lot are OK I s'pose.... :bounce:

tenebra_uk

Hmm...There must be something good about this place: it's my first - and still only - virtual community

I was simply looking for hints on AITD and ended up with a whole bunch of new friends ;)

Minos
14-03-2002, 21:07
Ha! Same with me... I'd never subscribed to a forum before – I didn't even know what one was. I'd finished playing AITD and was simply searching the internet to see if there was anything extra to it when I came across the Infogrames forums. I couldn't resist showing off by answering questions, then I got mixed up with... well, the people I did... :confblue:

And what an intellectually stimulating group of people they turned out to be! :rollani:

BFalcon

And to think: If Alex hadn't moved some of the more fun EoCO threads here, I'd never have found this board... :)

So now you know who to blame... ;)

alexp
20-03-2002, 10:55
Unfortunately the rebuilding is not the result of some wedding - night over-indulgence (I'm married now, so none of that..)

Its because the front of our house is coated in the most unpleasant pebble-dash you're likely ever to have seen. Its truly horrible, so its all coming off. Most of the wall will probably come off with it, unfortunately....

Diablo
20-03-2002, 10:58
A house in the middle of London...*watches the house* hmm..."NEW SCOTLAND YARD" hmmm ... :wierdblu:

Whitewolf
20-03-2002, 11:00
Couldn't you just plaster over the pebble dash?

Diablo
20-03-2002, 11:04
plaster ? That would really not look that good.... :wierdblu:

alexp
20-03-2002, 11:15
no it needs to come off. Its based on a very imporous cement which holds damp into the wall, so when the pebble dash comes off, the wall dries out and can breath again

Diablo
20-03-2002, 11:18
Is this house that old ?

How many people here frequent the NA Infogrames boards?

Minos
08-05-2002, 23:07
A group of us haunted the Alone in the Dark forum there for a few months while the UK forum was out of action over the winter, and we just about took it over. Only about 1 in 50 of the messages related to AitD though! Diablo and I posted over 1500 messages each and the total must have been over 5000! I occasionally pop back over for a look, but it's just serious stuff now.

The trouble is, while the UK forum may be a bit on the small side, the NA one is simply too big! Just looking at the general forums – the non-game ones I mean – shows that few people are spending the time considering or even looking at all the other messages. Once something gets that big it becomes rather depersonalised – nothing personal, you understand!

They're also a bit on the heavy side too! All politics and moral issues! It also seems to involve more argument than discussion – I was occasionally tempted to post a message, but thought "Why bother? No one listens anyway. They just repeat what they were saying before." OK, an exaggeration, but I suspect you know what I mean.

We pride ourselves on our simple, peasant wit here – making jokes about each other's sex lives is about as elevating as it gets... That way it doesn't really matter if people don't argue logically or read your posts... :confblue: :rollani:

But we could allways make a poll about what what option was missed by the poll :D

Understudy is of course correct – I'll see what I can find in my spare parts box for him.

Di – the title Aliens was the US title for the second film in the series (it was never officially called 'Alien 2'). It was followed by Alien 3 (the only one to actually have a number in its title), then Alien Resurrection (neither of which was a patch on the first two, which were excellent).

The android in Alien was called Ash (played by Ian Holm) and the one in Alien Resurrection was, as you said, a girl; Annalee Call (played by Winona Ryder).

I think Bishop may have survived into Alien 3, since he was alive at the end of Aliens, but I'm not sure about this, and I'm certainly not going to watch it again to find out!

On a final note I should like to point out that the Official Diablo™ parts and accessories are genuine human or animal tissue – not synthetics as in the vastly inferior WingCommander range...

WingCommander
06-06-2002, 20:22
Bishop survived in Aliens although HEAVILY damaged... It was connected for short time in Alien 3 by Ripley to have an inform of what happened during her last space voyage...

I must also issue that Minos' Diablo™ living parts apart from being innecesarely expensive only results in Frankenstein-like monsters, lowering quality and credibility to the final product. Wellcome to 21st Century Minos, the Century of DAIBLO, the cheaper and Enhanced replica!!

Well obviously you don't like something about the board. but you shouldn't label us all as biased or unfair or whatever, cause we're all very different people.

When a moderator has a problem with someone or something on the board we do usually discuss the problem with each other in the moderators forum, and try to figure out a way to fix the problem, by being as fair as possible to everyone evolved.

I know you and kudos seem to have a problem because your name comes up...a lot in the moderators forum.

I check in on the EOCO forum from time to time to see what's going on, but I rarely post there since I don't own the game.

I've read post by you, and you do seem to instigate kudos on sometimes and you know he'll reply in anger.

Don't get me wrong, kudos may on some occasions gone overboard but he is after all human, not gods ;) and although I may not agree with what kudos has says sometimes, the EOCO forum is run basically by kudos and suicidesquad completely, so you'll have to live with it.

Every moderator on the board has been here quite a while and I'd like to think every one of them has been as fair and unbiased as possible, but again we are only human and we do have the tendency to have off days.

Being gratuitously unpleasant once on the board wasn't enough, you had to repeat yourself... :rollani: Fine. Actions call for reactions, that's part of the dynamics of social relations - but you know that, being an expert in that field. Knowing everything about social relations, I take you know exactly what you are doing, therefore I am not prepared to justify your behaviour.

Just a little question (it's a simple one, don't worry, I won't embarrass you too much): since the mods are respectively English, Irish, Australian, Canadian and Italian, which ethnic origin are you referring to?

Walker

I do not want to embarass you too much,

therefore my pm to you.

For people who like to see the essentials of the answer:

Following terms have different meanings:
ethnics
culture
nation

tenebra_uk
19-10-2002, 11:40
Why depriving the world of such an enlighted view? :rollani: Hence, I've decided to quote Walker's pm to me:

Ethnocentrism
I do not know if you really know what the term means, therefore I will recite:

"Ethnocentrism is the tendency to assume that one's culture and way of life constitute the norm or are superior to all others. The ethnocentristic person sees his (or her) own group as the center or defining point of culture and views all other cultures as deviations from what is "normal"."
William Graham Sumner

I hope that you do not get confused with the terms of culture and nation.

Further I have not said that ALL moderators are ethnocetristic. Indeed you show some tendencies into this direction through overprotecting 2potscreama. The cultural group I am referring to are the 'Web Paladins under Kudos'. If you now smile mildly and say 'that is not a culture' I willc ertainly inform you also about the term 'culture'.

So, your assumption is that in spite of totally different backgrounds, we all fall under the mighty effect of Kudos' luminescent persona. With all my respect for Kudos, I must confess that other schools of thought, cultures, experiences and great minds have played a role in building my personality. I could ask you to illustrate what this extraordinary culture involves (sounds so powerful to wipe away any substratum :rollani: ); I won't, though.

So you have all the answers. I "protect" ( :rollani: ) 2pots 'cos I fall into some devious category your mind has created - surely it can't be because I do have a high opinion of the guy.

Do me a favour...Indeed you show some tendencies into this direction through overprotecting 2potscreama

So this wasn't a specimen of what you have just defined as "intrusion of privacy"? So you expect to invade my own space and label my personality and be left alone? You haven't even noticed that the word "devious" accompanied the word "category" - not "mind" - and the implication in my sentence was that I take you have a mind.

When did I label you, do you actually know what the word means? I know that you are proud to have a degree in the linguistic field: it still does not display that you know the word 'lable' how it is used in societal terms.

You haven't even noticed that the word "devious" accompanied the word "category"

Oh yes I have, devious is the describing adjective of the noun category.

This is and will be the only time I pick on such a matter, firstly because I regard this as a light-hearthed forum and therefore I don't perceive myself as an interesting matter to be discussed, secondly because I genuinely do not care of what people think about me (not out of disrespect, but if I had to please the world I'd become schizofrenic :bigeye: ). Little, none or considerable compence one can have in one given subject (and I not talking strictly about myself) will certainly not appear in this place; rest sure that your competence, which has only been illustrated by a number of text book quotations out of context, does not shine either. The patronising attitude you displayed by repeatedly using quotations, as if people couldn't pick up a dictionary if they were interested in understanding what you are saying, in my opinion reveals the need of making a statement. I don't have that necessity, as I have stated several times I do not hold any respect for academic achievements and if I mentioned mine to you was simply as a reaction at your arrogant assumption that if I didn't know a term I would be so lazy not to look it up. Action, reaction.

Though you used and abused the word "ethnocentrism", which indeed means a belief in the intrinsic superiority of a group to which one belongs, you failed to define the group.

I won't blame you as well because of your friends.

Well...you mean I should post more often on the Off-Topic so that I do not have to be afraid becoming paranoid? Yes, I guess that is what I can see out of it. Indeed I do not think you said that.

Summary - correct so far tenebra (hey that is a rhyme urgh)

Little, none or considerable compence one can have in one given subject (and I not talking strictly about myself) will certainly not appear in this place; rest sure that your competence, which has only been illustrated by a number of text book quotations out of context, does not shine either.

Yes agreed but if we met you would see that there is more behind. Unfortunately we won't have the possibility. Really, a pitty.

The patronising attitude you displayed by repeatedly using quotations, as if people couldn't pick up a dictionary if they were interested in understanding what you are saying, in my opinion reveals the need of making a statement.

Well indeed I am there again your opinion, but I was just spoiled through a guy on another forum who wants always to see a PROOF. So I tried to avoid the silly sentence 'prove it' right from the beginning. I usually think it looks rather ummm may I say bizarre (?) to quote somebody without being asked for it.

I don't have that necessity, as I have stated several times I do not hold any respect for academic achievements and if I mentioned mine to you was simply as a reaction at your arrogant assumption that if I didn't know a term I would be so lazy not to look it up.

Yes okay, you know already what I think of degrees as well.

Though you used and abused the word "ethnocentrism", which indeed means a belief in the intrinsic superiority of a group to which one belongs, you failed to define the group.

Well initially I meant fascist, but after having had a few exchanges, I think that most moderators do not fit in it. Sorry.

Just tell me when I 'abused' it and how I abused it. Only saying that I abused a term is, pardon me, cheap.

Does that mean that I should accept your flaming here?

The word 'flaming' has been a little bit too much abused here by other people before, I even think what I did here was nOT flaming. So could you explain what you mean please?

tenebra_uk
19-10-2002, 15:55
Well initially I meant fascist, but after having had a few exchanges, I think that most moderators do not fit in it. Sorry.

I take the broader meaning of the word, as a militaristic, extremely right wing attitude. How can you insinuate there's political manipulation here? I would be very cautious with using the term "fascist" as it could make a few people jump here - only a guess...(Just for the records, I will never tollerate it from anybody)

"Ethnocentrism" is too generic in its connotation (therefore we have the racism, culturalcentrism etc etc...ethnocentrism strictly referrs to ethnicity, therefore it shouldn't be used in a cultural or pseudo cultural context); using it as a synonym for "fascist" is already abusing the word, extreme ethnocentrism is only one side (and not the most relevant) of fascism. To some extent, ethnocentrism is an innate human motion that validates man's urge to be part of a group.

Flaming: in my interpretation, it's a calculated way to gratuitously insult or provoke anybody here.

The biased and ethnocetristic moderatorship and that people are moderators who have no clue of social relations.

That's an example of it. If it was directed to me personally, I could have decided whether to ignore it or not, as it's phrased in the plural, replying was the only alternative I was given.

Walker

I do not doubt that your description is correct from the linguistic meaning. whereby from the societal aspect it is not. Ethnocentrism does not refer to the ethnic groups only.

I did not intend to use it as synonym, fascist as AFAIK is a very strong word. Indeed as you see I intended initially to use the word.

The highlighted part of your comment, I see rather as extremely dangerous and it could be and has been used even to justify ethnocentrism.

Just considering what would be if it could only be used in the meaning of ethnic groups.

Just a little question (it's a simple one, don't worry, I won't embarrass you too much): since the mods are respectively English, Irish, Australian, Canadian and Italian, which ethnic origin are you referring to?

Living in different countries does not exclude to be from the same ethnic group. Now, which ethnic group could it be? Well, thinking about it, maybe caucasian. But let me continue in thinking. Could it really be caucasian? No, because who says that you are all caucasians. Therefore sorry tenebra, I do know when to use words and terminology.

I do not doubt in your linguistical ability, do not doubt in my societal and psychologic knowledge too. Okay?

Flaming: in my interpretation, it's a calculated way to gratuitously insult or provoke anybody here.

1) kudos is the big, bad moderator. but contrary to popular(?) belief he cannot control minds, so plz dont ask him to get you a girlfriend, and he doesn't pay people money for their supporting his point of view.
2) Walker is unable to point to any of the "flames" he refers to other than 7 *very mild* ones made in one thread, over a period of 2 days, 6 months ago. These have since been discussed publicly with Walker and APOLOGISED for *twice*. Walker has accepted the apology, for most people it is incredibly ignorant to demand an apology for the same actions twice... yet he did, and he got one again, he accepted it, and yet it would appear that it still bothers him. an example of the *very mild flames* that Walker took exception to was refering to him as "wee blade". (blade being another name for walker).
3) ONE person has been banned, not Two... AFAIK. That person was Eisenfaust, and he was banned by the admin for continued bad language and blatant breaking of BB rules. This had absolutely nothing to do with kudos, and has also been discussed extensively before. nothing more can be said about it that hasn't been said, and any denial that EisenFaust *didnt* continuallly break the rules, and *wasnt* given every chance and more to abide by them is pure delusion on the part of whoever believes such denial... again the *proof* of the situation is on the BB.
4) Walker has been asked many times to show any "flaming" from kudos that has been unprovoked from Walker since the thread 6 months ago. No such proof has yet been forwarded.

END COMMENT.

Kudos: Walker is unable to point to any of the "flames" he refers to other than 7 *very mild* ones made in one thread, over a period of 2 days, 6 months ago.

Where do your six months come from? I said January. I did not speak about myself as you can highlighted see either.

Kudos: ONE person has been banned, not Two

This one person Eisenfaust was indeed a little bit rough, but he tried to defend himself. The people where the attacks came from are still members of the BB. I believe they got attention messages but they just did not stop as well as Eisen did not stop in defending himself. These other members have not stopped flaming until now against my friends and me personally. One of them has deliberately flamed me yesterday and admitted it openly that he was flaming, I reported him three times but no action was taken.

What happened with Ami Chan? Or do you ignore that?

Kudos: Walker has been asked many times to show any "flaming" from kudos that has been unprovoked from Walker since the thread 6 months ago. No such proof has yet been forwarded.

Well you ignore the fact that:
You closed a thread where you were asked a couple of things. There you stated your points in an arrogant and ignorant style yesterday without giving the possibility to reply. Then I tried to reply by opening a new thread which was closed again.

What's the difference between ethnocentrism and culturalcentrism, then? Ethnos means "pagan", which was obviously meant to identify a different tribe (nothing to do with nation). The connotation is "difference". Ethnicity has a different meaning in cultural and social anthropology, if you don't state your starting point, we won't even be able to find a common language.

Well tenebra at least we are sharing then one thing. I had maybe once (but I guess even never really) heard of culturalcentrism before. Therefore I had first to look it up to avoid misunderstandings. Actually it is a not so often used term.
Comparison on search results at google.com:
Culturalcentrism: 3
Ethnocentrism: 27,000

In fact in the usage of the word I even have to agree with you that culturalcentrism describes 'thinking that ones culture is superior' more accurately.

Indeed as I said I had never heard of it.

Frankly, I shared initially the thinking with you that ethnocentrism is only about ethnic groups. Experiences with native speakers of English have changed my thinking. Indeed ethnocentrism is used for the superior thinking of social group, race and is sometimes (but there I think really improperly) used for nationalism.

I agree with you completely that culturalcentrism is more suitable because it is more sensible and concerning directly the real issue of culture. Indeed I will use it carefully in my personal environment because I do not want to discuss the correctness of the word every week new.

me where you're coming from and I'll be able to answer in scientific terms if that's what you want

If you aim again on cultural or social anthropology, I have to say that I am neither oriented on cultural nor social anthropology, because I am not a textbook fetishist nor a guru admirer (which is not meant offensively). I rather try to assemble suitable statements from both of them to adept it into my lessons and into my daily thinking progress.

(I can also use plain conversation) I can spend my whole life (and I won't) trying to figure out what you mean, if you tell me what language you're talking of we can have a discussion, rather than discussing on the language

Sorry for that

the fact is that I'm not a sophist and I'd rather know what terminology I should use

fact is that I try always to expand my understanding and I am not quite sure anymore which terminology *I* should use.

Please keep in mind, before I proceed with this joke that it is actually an "action" joke. It is best told with all of the hand motions. Still you may find it amusing:

There was once a man who went to take high-diving lessions (jumping from a plane with a parachute). As the instructor is talking to the student he comes to the part where he says, "Then after you jump from the plane you count to ten and pull the rip cord. The parachute will pop out and open up to bring you down safely."

The student then raised his hand and asked, "What if the parachute does not open?

Well you let that parachute go. You still have time! You then pull the rip cord on your back-up parachute. That should pop out and open to bring you down safely." The instructor smiled.

The student raised his hand again. "Well, what if that parachute doesn't open?"

At this point the instructor hesitated. He looked both ways, as if to make sure no one else was listening and said: "Well, of course that has never happened to me. However I hear that if you say. "Oh Great Buddah! Please help me." A giant hand will come out of the clouds and hold you up safely.

The student was astonished. "Are you serious?"

"Well, I mean, I have never tested it myself. It is just something I have heard."

The student found this information fascinating, and never forgot it. The student went on to enjoy his new sport and made many jumps, but as might be expected one day he jumped and his parachute did not open. He let the parachute go, and pulled on the rip cord for his back up parachute. Again it failed. A sense of doom gripped the young man. Finally he remembered his instructors words and said, "Oh Great Buddah, Please help me." Well, lo and behold, a giant hand came out of the clouds and caught the young man and held the man in his palm safely. At this the young man, exclaimed, "Oh Thank God!" ....*SLAP!* (Another hand came out of the clouds.)

My Gosh! You read and reread my message five times and could not figure it out? That's pathetic. Well no amount of running around is going to help you out. It would only make you dizzy. Besides lassie was a nice dog. I am not nice, and I ain't no dog! :madred:

Egad! Another pencil neck with a dictionary! You're not another devotee of Walker too are you? I don't suppose you rely on Encarta as well? BTW, how many dogs you know type, and respond to you on their computer? I recognize that coyotes are a type of dog, but I find the term too generic. The term brings to mind the domestic type that licks your hand. I prefer biting them myself. I prefer the generic term canine.

Good point Di....

While I'm have no absolute proof that there are no typing dogs out there, I have not met any in person...... :wierdblu:

I do have to rely on what people tell me..... ( You tell me that you're a coyote/wolf/warship... who am I to disagree :confblue: )

For all I know there are many typing, coherent dogs on the internet with whom I interact with daily, but chose not to tell me that they are dogs........ :grntngue: :eekblue: :bigeye:

This one should get Minos involved...

How naive! Typing dogs indeed!

It's clear to me that none of you lives outside my own imagination. How could such strange characters possibly exist in real life?

How else can you explain the fact that after I've taken my medication all these messages suddenly make perfect sense?

I don't know why I'm even writing this... I may just as well be talking to myself...

...mind you, as Gandalf said, his way of talking to himself arose from the habit of addressing the most intelligent person present... :rollani:

No White Wolf and I are not of the same clan. However I do have a brother named lonewolf, but he tends to be more human than me. The coyote part of me is how I identify my Hispanic side. For me the coyote is a symbol of survival. Ranchers, Farmers, and Hunters do their best to wipe out the coyote, but it continues to prosper. In the same way the USA does everything they can to stop the Hispanic population, yet that too continues to thrive.

That is all their is to it. :) woof woof. :p
