Hey Dudes !

I found something strange....Is it true that there is a town or village in Britain that is called ---->

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysilio gogogoch

I got to know that this IS fact ! Where is that town ?

It is a Keltic name ! You can split the different parts into different meanings ...

Llan means "Church"

fair means "mary"

pwll means "a hollow"

gwy means "white"

ngyl means "hazel"

lgogery means "near to the"

chwyr means "rapip"

ndrobwll means "whirlpool"

llan means "church"

tysilio means "saintīs name"

gogo means "cave"

goch means "red"

NOw you Britains are really crazy sometimes ! :wierdblu: :bigeye:

I've read that name somewhere before.
There's even a place called Y,a village called X,and a town called Hell.Wierd.......

True as true can be - it's a town in Wales. The railway station sign is quite funny -rather long!!!

It is usually referred to as "Llanfair PG" - easier for the Saxons amongst us to pronounce.

PS We are Britons, not Britains :D

Yup. Its a place in Wales.

The name translates to:

"St. Mary's Church in the hollow of white hazel near a rapid whirlpool and the Church of St. Tysilio near the red cave."

oops double post!

Nope,can't think of it.

I can confirm what warspite said, it is in Wales, I live a meagre 20 mins away from it and I have been a few times. The train station actually holds the world record for the longest sign in the world. Believe it or not but this is something like the third longest name in the world (What the hell is longer than that?)

Diablo

I got the picture of the Railwaystation right in front of me ! On the right side of the station ,on a garage...there is that big sign !

when I was about 10 one of my teachers Friends made a song about that station and he brought it into school and made us listen to it (It seemed like the first 30 seconds of the song was just the name being pronouced)

The great thing about place names in this country is the number of really strange-sounding ones. Douglas Adams wrote a book called The Meaing of Liff which contains a list of (genuine) place-names as if they are words in a dictionary.

How funny you find it depends on your individual sense of humour, and some of them are a lot funnier than others. Some have also become rather dated.

My favourite is 'Ely' (The first, tiniest inkling you get that something, somewhere, has gone terribly wrong), but there are a lot of other good ones, such as 'Glossop' and the linked word 'Swanage'.

The trouble is, the humour relies on being able to sense the connection with a similar sounding word, and in some cases this rather relies on having a good vocabulary. I say this in warning to Diablo; I'm afraid most of them will lose the joke when translated into German.

There's a copy on the internet at: http://folk.uio.no/alied/TMoL.html

It just goes to show how little we really know about other forum members... all we have to go by is what they say about themselves, and how do we know the truth of that? Even photos don't mean much; they could be of anyone.

Consider the case of SweetHepziba for example (a bit before your time, Whitewolf – back on the US forum). That caused a few red faces when the truth came out! Take my advice – don't believe anyone on this forum... :wierdblu:

Whitewolf

But if you mean "How is it you never came closer to losing your virginity than being kissed by a girl in your class when you were eleven years old?" then the answer is slightly more complicated.

But it basically comes down to being a social misfit – I was always the sort of nice, sensible lad that a girl's mother would wish her daughter would go out with (as opposed to the type that the daughter herself wanted). In fact I almost always got on very well with the parents of my friends – far more so than is considered natural. I think you get the picture.

The other aspect was fear. I shall illustrate, if you'll indulge me:

While what I say about girls not being interested in me was largely true, there was the occasional bizarre exception. One such was when I was in my early twenties. I was self-employed and often walked down town to collect or deliver work, and this would sometimes be in the late afternoon. For a period there were a couple of girls (aged about 15 at a guess – they were in uniform and were obviously hanging around on their way back from school) who lurked in a side street waiting for me. It started with one of them calling out that immortal line "My mate fancies you" (how many times have lads had that said to them?). The difference here was that the other girl was far from shy and would call out suggestive remarks like "If you've got the time I've got the inclination". I never did risk more than an apprehensive smile in response as I passed. They sounded like the sort of girl my mother wouldn't have approved of... :eekblue:

So there you are. The fact is girls scared the hell out of me until I was in my thirties, by which time it was too late to matter. Let that be a warning to you, Whitewolf! While your idea of waiting and choosing wisely is a fine sentiment, I'd tend to agree with Warspite – don't risk putting it off too long or it'll be too late to start... :frownblu:

There, the Wise One has spoken on how to keep your virginity... Diablo will no doubt be happy to give you advice on how to lose it... :rollani:

Mmmm, put's me in mind of, wait for this Understudy, are you ready, a country and western song, from 60's/70's era, the title of which was "I don't like spiders and snakes" will try and find the lyrics :)

It can depend on what you call silly, this song sort of say's it all, but it is like the food fight, and the ice cubes down the back, silly but in some circles, not if you know what I mean ;)

Whitewolf
27-03-2002, 11:47
I think I get what you mean.
I really don't want to mess up,so I'm taking my time about this.
She hasn't expressed an interest in me yet,but she doesn't know that I have an interest in her.

Understudy

In the immortal words of Garth in Waynes World:
I say hurl. If you blow chunks and she comes back, she's yours. If you spew and she bolts, then it was never meant to be."

Which roughly translates to:

If you just be yourself and 'she' likes you, then all's good. If you have to act like someone else for her to like you, then you're wasting your time and hers...

Whitewolf
27-03-2002, 12:02
I act normally when I'm speaking with her. She's a very nice girl(and very friendly to me). She's a classmate of mine.It seems like she already has a boyfriend(cause she's always near one guy),but she claims that she has no relationship with anyone.

Minos
27-03-2002, 17:26
No need for that kind of remark, Warspite!

I'll have you know that a girl started fondling by small, firm buttocks in a pub one Christmas... and that was after she'd seen my face! I never quite got over that... :eekblue: :rollani:

Whitewolf
27-03-2002, 17:27
Wow.....
WHat did you do after that?

Minos
27-03-2002, 17:31
Not a lot! Like I said, I always was terrified of girls!

Besides, she was a friend of someone I knew slightly, and I strongly suspect he put her up to it... :wierdblu:

Curiously enjoyable though! :yum:

Whitewolf
27-03-2002, 17:33
Haha!
I would think so!
Why are you terrified of females?

Warspite

She fondled your buttocks..and you thought it was "curious"?
Did you not have any.....urges?

Minos

Whitewolf:

Terror of females is not something to be explained – you either are or you aren't.

However (as I'm sure you are well aware yourself), things are made a lot worse if you are attracted to the girl in question, and even more so if you think she might fancy you.

It wears off as you get older – partly because you care less about what people think anyway, and partly because you know that, as an older person, you're less attractive anyway.

Warspite:

The 'curiously enjoyable' was a partial-quote from an old radio comedy program whose name eludes me for the moment... in fact I'm not absolutely certain which series... the old memory problem again. :bigeye:

...but the line in question ended with "curious... but strangely enjoyable."

I'm afraid it's one of those little personal phrases that tends to lodge in the mind long after everyone else has forgotten it – I should have avoided using it!

As a matter of fact the experience was very enjoyable indeed – all the more so because of its uniqueness... :frownblu:

I can recommend it to anyone though!

Warspite
27-03-2002, 22:09

Ha! Round the Horne! No, it wasn't that... even I am a bit too young to remember the original programmes of that (or the subsequent Stop Messing About), though I have of course heard repeated extracts... no, it must have been a few years later than that, and it's really annoying me that it's eluding me!

I think the most likely candidates are either I'm sorry I'll Read That Again (early/mid 1970s) or the highly surreal The Burkiss Way (mid/late 1970s) – but I just can't remember the full context, not even the whole line. Gah! :bigeye:

Only just seen this one!

I suspect you're talking about two slightly different things here.

I think Warspite probably meant the euphoric novelty aspect of it as much as anything. That's something that doesn't go on forever... that feeling that there's so much to experience... new lands to explore... part of growing up generally, not just the sexual thrill of adolescence.

That state of being "permanently over-excited" describes adolescence very well (male adolescence anyway, I don't know what it's like for girls). A feeling that's it's all new and that anything could happen – preferably involving that pretty girl you really fancy! The fact that it probably won't doesn't dampen your spirits – you're too exuberant and optimistic. :bounce:

Now I'm sorry Tenebra, but I refuse to believe that this is the same when you're thirty as when you're fifteen! The key word in Warspite's remark was "permanent" – and that's what makes the difference. You can still become infatuated with someone, but it's not part of your normal, everyday state of mind.

What happens is that people prefer not to think about older people thinking about sex, that's all. And older people, realising this, say that they don't think about sex any more. Rather hypocritical, but more tasteful.

Besides, unless they were really extreme, I don't suppose they'd do any harm to a ten-year-old. Kids of that age just don't understand the references, for obvious reasons.

As was being discussed before, they're innocent in the strict sense of the word, ie they don't have the knowledge or the experience – that's what defines innocence, not whether they swear or make rude jokes. Many kids do that; it doesn't mean that sex actually means anything to them.

I think your niece is safe from Di! :confblue: :wierdblu:

Ignorance is bliss.
Perhaps Minos is right, but I wouldn't expose a 10 year old to THAT kind of material.

Minos
02-04-2002, 17:03
Well, I didn't see the actual material, and no doubt it was all in very bad taste, but what I meant was that I shouldn't think a text message would do much harm.

I could be wrong of course... :bigeye: :eekblue:

Whitewolf
02-04-2002, 17:08
It might have an adverse effect on the 10 year old.
I've heard 3 year olds scolding their parents the 'F' word.

Minos
02-04-2002, 19:11
Well, I didn't say I was endorsing his behaviour (and as I said, I don't know what he actually wrote) but I sometimes feel people get these things out of proportion. They seem to forget they were ever kids themselves. It was only a text message, not a face-to-face conversation, and I doubt if he was propositioning her for sex or anything like that.

All I can say is that I posted a photo of my Yamaha FJ1100 with the nine-year-old daughter of some friends posing on it. I was half expecting Di to make some suggestive remark about what I'd been up to with her, but he didn't. In fact he made quite a point of not doing so.

I suspect that Tenebra could post the link to the photo of her niece without fear. We may be perverts here, but we're not going to cause harm or distress to a girl of ten.

Men may make ribald remarks, even about clearly underage girls, but it's just words to them; only a tiny minority would actually want to hurt a child. And if I'm wrong, please don't disillusion me.

tenebra_uk
02-04-2002, 20:21
Naa, all Di did was asking my niece if she intends to follow my footsteps with leather and heels...and then telling her he'll be waiting a few years to sleep with her :rollani: ;) As I said, niece wasn't affected in any ways as she would never read anything addressed to me unless I invite her to do so

But you do wonder about what would happen if someone else were to read some of these pages...

As I've already said, children should obviously be protected, but you can go too far in the other direction. Overprotecting children can be counterproductive; after all, they're going to have to learn about life some day. And children learn about life by observing adults.

Minos

Yeah, quite! ;)

But of course that's just it. We were all children once; now we're adults. We don't expect children to remain like that when they grow up – it would be unhealthy!

People always ruefully say things like "I hope they don't grow up like me!" But of course they do – in broad principle at least. Adult behaviour does not, on average, change over the centuries. We don't like children to grow up, but that's the way it is...

itīs quite simple

ask her for a date

when she says no
you can search another girl and can forget her

but there is also the possibility that she says yes
and then
no problems anymore
nice dreams
and a lot RL fun:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
