View Full Version : Zombies or Aliens?

Here it is - the poll you've all been waiting for :D
Zombie films are , of course, the finest examples of cinematic skill imaginable - I'm thinking Zombie Holocaust , Night of the Living Dead here - but there are a few lost and deluded souls who prefer sci-fi films, and are entirely responsible for Star Wars and Star Trek movies being churned out in vast quantities. I don't mind Aliens or Predator, but was Star Wars 4 anywhere as good as Evil Dead 1,2 or 3?
No.
It was pants.
So vote... and DONT TURN THIS INTO A STAR WARS THREAD PLEEEEEEZZZZZZ

I would vote "I'm fine either way",but since there isn't one,I voted the alien one.

Ooh,didn't notice the zombie alien one earlier :)
Zombies are original and make good horror movies.I do like them too,but I feel the same way about aliens.
Ever wondered what if they combined the two(i.e Night of the Living Dead meets Aliens)?
Stay still?

Hmm......
Warspite Vs The Living Dead!
Errr.....
I think you should make it clear whether mummies are included under the heading 'zombies', Warspite.
My two nieces (the youngest is not yet five) have both mastered the art of lurching along, arms outstetched, eyes glassy, and as far as they are concerned there is no difference between the two.
As for good zombie films, some of the best are the B movie ones – it's part of the charm. There was one (can't remember the name unforunately) British one about a Cornish squire who solved the labour problem in his tin mine by reanimating the corpses of villagers – no wages, work 24 hours a day... real Thatcherite principles. Needless to say it all ended badly for him. Lots of lurching though.

Well , I've always had a flare for the theatrical - I've just never found a stage with a reinforced dry-dock. But a zombie movie..hmm :yum:
Whitewolf
02-04-2002, 17:06
With computers,you don't even need a dry dock,Warspite :)
Much less a stage.
I don't understand what the B in B-movie means.

B movie - as opposed to the A ranked feature ; the B movie, in my day, was like a warm up, with rotten production values and worse plot, shown before the big feature film. "B movie " eventually came to be used to label all rubbish movies - and I think they're brilliant. :D
Whitewolf
02-04-2002, 17:14
Bah.Rubbish movies?
Alright, maybe the effects and all that aren't that good, but you have to admit that some plots and storylines can be really good!
Well, there are B movies and there are B movies!
Some (which generally sink without a trace) are just not entertaining. Some are entertaining because they've got such laughable plots and sets/special effects. This is what most people mean when they talk about B movies nowadays.
Then again, once in a while, you'll get a low budget film which has a good plot and – given the limited budget – good filming. There aren't many of course, and opinions will differ about which ones fall into this category, but an example might be the Quatermass series. The last, Quatermass and the Pit, was pretty intellectual by the standards of most sci-fi films, indeed too much so for its own good, as many people found it hard to follow.
Another extremely good B movie – in the sense that it was a supporting film, rather than because it was low-budget – was The Bloody Chamber, based on the Angela Carter short story of the same name. Did anyone else see it? I can't remember what film it was supporting now, but I can remember it was better!

Surely you realise that the transition of a good movie into a 'cult' movie occurs when over a certain percentage of the population can recite the dialog at will?

Hey, I do that all the time, but it just winds me up that The Matrix was so over-sold, when the only stand out element of the entire film was the graphics!!!
The plot, acting and evrything else were TOSH....
PS the best experience I have had in a long time at the cinema was watching Independence Day - I laughed all the way through, and was getting dangerously hysterical by the end :bigeye:

There are certain songs that will cheer me up no matter what mood I'm in. (Blister in the Sun - Violent Femmes)
There are a few film scenes that will do the same...
The Matrix scene where they storm the building to rescue Morpheus is one... If I hear the music that accompanies that scene, I start smiling.....
Just easily amused I guess.
Well..something in common...I always start to smile too... :D  :D  :D

*battens down hatches* Well, thank God for that! I'm not the only one who thought so!
The special effects were great, but the plot was a great disappointment – very weak.
For a start a lot of it didn't make sense, simply being plot-devices to provide the action scenes. You can excuse this up to a point, as it was after all basically an action film.
But most disappointing of all was the basic premise. It started well – the good old "What is real?" idea. But when it came to the crunch it retreated into simplistic Hollywood truisms "We are freeing all these people!".
Freeing them from what? The WHOLE POINT is that in such a situation the characters couldn't tell what was real and what wasn't. What they were saying was that they would take all these people from a life of relative comfort and security and offer them a life of insecurity, hunger and deprivation... yet which would seem no more real than before. Wow, thanks!
When Morpheus launched into his diatribe about "What is real, Neo?" I thought we actually were going to get something challenging about the impossibility of making that judgement. But then it all fell flat when the apparently sceptical Morpheus never asked himself how he could tell whether 'his' world was real or not.
What I'd have liked to have seen – and this would have been daring – is for them to liberate all the people to the desolate wastelands of the 'real' world... then find THAT was a computer simulation as well, and they'd all been deluding themselves...
In the Arthur Clarke short story The Lion of Comarre, a yound man searches for, and finds, a place somewhat like the Matrix – where people seeking escape from the real world could 'plug in' and withdraw into a cyberworld in which they were happy. The hero starts heroically liberating them by pulling the plugs, but eventually learns that perhaps – for some people at least – there's nothing inherently wonderful about reality.
That story was written about fifty years ago...

What would be a good book/game/tv series to movie conversion?
Hey Minos ...I really don´t think that the plot of MATRIX is that bad or flat...there were a LOT OF open questions....but that´s what the movie wanted to do ...make everybody think WHAT reallity is...are we really here ? Dčja vűs... and so on....everyone has them sometimes...but none can´t say why...

Dčja vűs... and so on....everyone has them sometimes...but none can´t say why... I agree! It started with a lot of promise. I liked the first part of it, where they worked on the concept of how our 'reality' is simply a matter of our perceptions. But then it just turned into a standard action film. That's what I meant when I said I was disappointed.
There have been a LOT of other films on the 'What is real?' theme, many of them hardly heard of. The Matrix made it big because of its advertising hype – and, it must be said, the excellent special effects.
But have you seen Jacob's Ladder? Very weird and disturbing. And unlike The Matrix it kept you disoriented all the way through, and the ending was quite unpredictable. Not one for the kiddies though! More horror than sci-fi.
Or Videodrome, or eXistenZ (both David Cronenberg films). He was a bit sloppy with the plots (particularly with Videodrome), but it captured the feeling of the main character's complete loss of touch with reality extremely well. Rather stomach-churning, but powerful stuff.
And how many people have even heard of Dark City? But while the plot was a little weak, it certainly kept you guessing, and the special effects were superb as well.
WOW ! MINOS ! YOU SAW "eXistenZ" ?
ONly A few people on earth saw it ! I SAW IT TOO ! Great huh ? This strange living pink coloured pad...rub on it and....away...A great CANADIAN film...I am really surprised that YOU saw it ! GREAT !
