It depends whether you mean 'recent films' or 'films I've seen recently'.
The newest film I really liked was Shrek, but the best older ones I watched in the last couple of weeks were Twelve Monkeys and The Fifth Element.
The latter is hysterically funny – all the more so because when I first saw it I didn't realise it was going to be a comedy.
Ah, yes, an opportunity to say that it's a source of pride to me that so many Hollywood films have a British actor as the ruthless but sophisticated bad guy – something this country can still excel at! Alan Rickman, Ben Cross and Gary Oldman are all good bad examples from recent years, but there are plenty more...

Incidentally, I've just seen another good film – I got the DVD of Sleepy Hollow. Excellent gothic melodrama! Great stuff – good story, superbly constructed sets, good photography, good special effects...

*sighs* Sleepy Hollow...*sighs again* As you would expect, I'm a big Tim Burton's fan - including his poetry and sketches. How about Edward Scissorhands? And The Nightmare Before Christmas?  Sorry, need a tissue now

One minor aspect of Sleepy Hollow was how much difference a change in hair colour makes – Christina Ricci (who I hadn't seen since the Addams Family films) – as a blonde! I'm not sure if I'd have recognised her if I hadn't seen the credits.

The recent film I liked most was 'Hulholland Drive' by David Lynch and my overall favourites are 'Ikari' and 'Dersu Uzala' from Akira Kurosawa and 'The dead poet club' ( I do not know if that was the original title, but if you seen it you will know what fill I am talking about :) )
Note for those fans of Tim Burton: I love his films ( in fact I am wearing my beloved 'Mars Attacks' T-Shirt at the moment ), but accept an advice, do not try to see 'Planet of the Apes' :bigeye:  :wierdblu:  :frownblu:

My favorite movie of all time is "Excalibur". I went to see it the night my son was born. I left my wife sleeping in the hospital. I watch it every time it crosses my path.
I have yet to see the latest Star Wars installment, and I am looking forward to the next Star Trek movie.
There are many good movies
My top three:
The Matrix
Pulp Fiction
Enemy of the State
In this year so far:
A Knights Tale
Fast and Furious (I love Vil!)
Training Day

Excalibur is probably the best film version of that great epic! It has its flaws – mainly the degree to which it was cut down to make a feature-length film, but impressive and moving to watch...
Besides, the legend of King Arthur is about the only great British romance we have... there's even a place a few miles from where I live where Arthur and his knights are said to lie sleeping beneath a hill, waiting to be woken... people need legends like this! Most countries have them – whether it's Holger Danske, Frederick Barbarossa or whoever.
Mock at your peril!
Anyway, before you set me off like that, what I was going to say was that I've just watched another interesting film (I've just bought a batch of DVDs and been working my way through them).
It's The City of the Lost Children (La Cité des Enfants Perdus). It's not that recent (1995) but I hadn't heard of it before. Extremely bizarre! I was fascinated by it because I'm into folklore and mythology and it struck me that this is sort of story that would have been part of traditional story-telling at one time – the children kidnapped by the monster, who wishes to steal their dreams in order to remain young, but escaping from him in the end – but nowadays you'd be advised not to take children to see such a thing (it's rated 15 in the UK, 12 in Germany). Certainly you'd never get a film like this out of Hollywood – they'd tone it down to complete blandness.
It's not the best film I've ever seen, but it's very refreshing to see such an innovative one for a change.
Anyone who liked The Company of Wolves (or even Dark City) would probably like it...

I just downloaded and watched the Osbournes, episode one - it is surprisingly good. I'm downloading ep 2 now...
The last movie I watched was Pulp Fiction, after buying the DVD. Samuel L Jackson 0wnz that movie. My favourite scene is the restaurant hold-up at the end, because Jackson excels in his role. The wallet thing is class, too.
Prior to that, the best movie I've seen recently is Monty Python and the Holy Grail, again on DVD (Lego Knights special feature!!!), which is utterly hilarious. My favourite scene from that is the one where the Knights of Ni order the King to bring them a shrubbery... and it has a little white picket fence... :lolblue:

Sorry, but that was just a slam dunk right there.
There's a university in California that the granola-and-protest crowd notoriously attends with a campus theater that shows City of Lost Children every single week for some unknown reason. Granted, it's a very clever, artistic, delightful bit of poignant whimsy but it's hardly a religious experience.

Right, with their Holy Hand Grenade. "The counting shall always number three." Urg, i'm bad with quoting stuff. Don't mind me.
There was a series of PC games by 7th Level based on the Python movies and TV series. The company went belly up rather soon after that so i don't think many people got to get in on the fun. The first one was "Monty Python's Complete Waste of Time." It was full of animations and clips from the TV series hidden in navigable scenes a la Myst. There was also a game with a goal running through the whole thing but you had to figure out how to find that, too.
The other two were based on Holy Grail and Meaning of Life. The Meaning of Life game went far beyond stuff straight from the movie. That part was just the first half. Then it went on its own unique tangent philosophizing and criticizing everything from life to death to religion in that undeniably Pythonesque way. Some of the Pythons had a lot of input with those games, too. Ah well. They're gone forever now.
Speaking of games based on movies, that Blade Runner game is quite a little achievement; countless variables and whatnot.
At last! Someone else who's played Blade Runner! Whenever I mentioned it in lists of favourite games no one else seemed to know about it... I loved the paranoid, claustrophobic atmosphere, and the genuine uncertainty about whether you (the player) were an android with delusions or a human.
I turned out to be an android on both occasions I played it... :wierdblu:
But of the film – is there anyone else who agrees with me that in the Director's Cut version, something was lost in removing the Chandleresque voiceover? I think they should have left this part; it really fitted in with the mood of the film.
I saw a documentary about the film a few months ago with some interesting comments by Ridley Scott and Rutger Hauer, relating to the inclusion of the 'Unicorn Dream' bit in the Director's Cut. It was claimed (rather unconvincingly, it seemed to me) that this was to show that Deckard was in fact a replicant himself. When Gaff left an origami unicorn outside Deckard's flat at the end of the film it was supposed to reveal that They all knew about him, and what was in his mind (because they'd put it there).
I sincerely doubt whether any of this had occurred to Ridley Scott during the making of the original version! It doesn't really fit anyway, does it? Why should Gaff, a blade runner himself, know about Deckard being a replicant? No, I went along with Rutger Hauer's reply when he was asked whether Deckard was a replicant or not – "Ah, that's just Ridley's little indulgence..." (or something along those lines).
I was also interested to see that the bit of poetry that Roy Batty recited right at the end had been written by Rutger Hauer himself towards the close of filming, and tentatively suggested to Ridley by him almost at the last minute...

i'll bet not many people have heard of the game as
it seems to be pretty hard to come by. i read about the game on Amazon.com but it took quite a bit of effort on my part to come across one i could actually purchase. Plus, the maker is someone i've never heard of (Westwood), so i don't know whether they've gone belly-up or they're better known for other kinds of software. So far, i've just scratched the surface of Act 3 on my first play-through. Though as soon as i saw the clip where i get ambushed by the replicants and Clovis wants me alive i had suspicions that i may be a replicant. And at this point i'm hoping the photo of me at the moonbus hijacking is doctored and not really me, but in light of your two experiences with the game i'm fearing the worst. Let's hope it is possible to end up human at the game's conclusion. That'd be keen.
It's been quite a while since i've seen either version of the movie. Am i correct in remembering that there are more scenes of ambience and scenery here and there in the director's cut, or were those the spots the narration had been before?
 Well...I heard of the game "Blade Runner"...and even played a demo....But i never played the full game...
What about the opposite ? Films based on computer games....like Resident Evil , Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy, Mortal Combat...and in future..Yes Minos, you hear it right, SILENT HILL, Metal Gear Solid and some others...I forgot the names...
Well...I only saw Tomb Raider....hmm...Angelina Jolie...yummy ! :yum:

Films based on games are generally a waste of time to make and to watch. If one takes time to think of all the films there are out there to see, and then consider how much time a person has in life, it doesn't really add up to watch something like that, if you ask me.
Apparently there will be a movie based on Deus Ex, as well. That game is very complex and you know that any big-time Hollywood studio will just bollocks the whole thing up. The producers will be the folks who made Spiderman. That story is very simple and straightforward; easy enough to adapt from a comic book and quite successful. Decent movies have been made based on books, and comic books needn't be any different in that respect.
Making movies based on games, however, runs along the same lines of the recent trend of making movies that have already been made (Psycho 2000) and making movies based on old TV shows so the baby-boomers can somehow feel relevant to pop society again, as if that should be one's goal in life (to be hip with the kids forever and ever). It's a lousy idea that yields poor to mediocre results.
There are 1,000s of up-and-coming talented screenwriters out there with original stories just clamoring for one little chance, but the studios take the low road and produce these craptastic money-making machines. How many of these people making these movies do you think have actually played any of these games? Probably none.
Well...I don´t really think that ALL potential game-movies are a waste of time...
Tomb Raider for example wasn´t really THAT bad....ok it wasn´t a great film at all..but definately average...well..the most positive thing in that film was probably Angelina Jolie herself than the story itself.... well...but that was what I expected when I saw it and so I wasn´t really disappointed...
Resident Evil for example wasn´t that bad as well, although I personally didn´t see it....For people who like splatter-films..this movie was really good...The same will be with Silent HIll...
I know that there are a lot of small individuals out there that have scripts that are much better than the damn Hollywood-mainstream...Another thing is that most cinamas won´t show them..you have to go to smaller cinemas that are open for such films like eXiSteZ or Mulholland Drive... :rollani:

Hey, I didn't saw that Blade Runner thread! I own that game and finished it many times! Good game. About that directors cut fo the film, I prefer the new version, without the narration. I think the movie sense is quite clear without it, but I understand some people would need it to know all that Deckard was thinking of (I am not saying you did not understand it Minos)

But I think that ! ;) :p
I'm on more familiar ground now... :rollani: :grntngue:
But actually, WingCommander, though I was slow to follow some of the parts of the film first time I watched it at the cinema (poor sound quality!) I have watched it several times since but I still prefer the voiceover. It was really reminiscent of the Raymond Chandler (and similiar) types of seedy private eye films and I thought it suited the mood (ie Deckard's disillusioned nature) very well.
Incidentally, this is the only case I can think of offhand where a film is better than the book upon which it is based... another possible example is The Woman in Black, a superb ghost story, but that's a bit of a niche film and I doubt if it made it to the cinema – I saw it on TV. (I think this was possibly the only film that literally made my hair stand on end! :eekblue: )
As to films of games, the only one I've seen is Final Fantasy... but I never played the game! I watched it because it was highly recommended, and because it was entirely computer-animated. Unfortunately, though the graphics were impressive, I found the film itself a bit of a disappointment.
Avatars? Have you checked that you clicked on the 'Yes' radio button 'Use Custom Avatar'? It's set to 'No' by default and it's easy to miss. As far as I can remember you can upload an avatar immediately (hence the 0 posts). They may have changed it of course. It will give an error message if your file (a GIF or a JPEG are the usual types) is too large. The fact that you didn't mention seeing an error message is what suggests that you didn't actually tell it to use the avatar you uploaded. I can say this because I made this mistake a couple of times before I noticed...
Well...so what might be his real problem with it ? Hmm...he didn´t write if he got it now... :rollani:

Something you might not know (hope I won't sound patronising, it's just that I grew up watching dystopian films such as Blade Runner and A Clockwork Orange  ): the narration was pretty bad on purpose - Harrison Ford fighted against it as he believed it was utterly redundant and thought it would be cut off if his voice over was bad enough :lolblue: It didn't work though :wierdblu:
Hey Tenebra...don´t disturb my discussion with good ol´Minos !

Perhaps we may never know...

Ah no, my lady!
My presence here is needed as the rain for the living
also needed is my humildity as the evil for the divinity
as well as my logic as my posting style is just ironic
and even my intelligence, for those who in me have full confidence...
* Wing doesn't even know how he could wrote that... *
no problem for me ! Ban him if you want ! :grntngue:

Sorry I though we were talking about the time here, not the real age when I posted that. Diablo couldn't be the oldest that way...

Yes, folks, it's a mighty, regal pimentoed olive. i drew it and scanned it. It may not translate terribly well to .jpg form, however. i've got my golfer dandy on the US AITD forum. That might have translated a bit better.
And i may only have 10 or so posts, but i've technically been a member since February, for what that's worth.
Should this thread be steered back towards movies, or is it too late?
A movie based on Myst would be muy, muy excelente. Simply add an action star and lots of `splosions and you've got yourself a summer blockbuster on your hands.

lol.
Thing is,once you get a thread back on topic,it'd probably go off topic faster than light.
Anyways.......
Let's see,a lot of my friends and myself think that a game like Metal Gear Solid would make a good movie.

I would like to see a series about "Gabriel Knight", a film wouldn't be enough. Also "Crimson Skies" or "FreeSpace" would be nice too... if the games were respected, not as in "Resident Evil" as I have heard....

However,I think that movies that are conversions from video games should be original, and separate from the video games, but should follow the vidoegames in terms of concept, and not stray too far from the universe the game is set in.
Unfortunately,the "Wing Commander" movie was....well....really bad,or so I hear.
Please say it's not so?

It was worse than really bad...
I just hope the series that Chris Roberts is planning to make are better...
