View Full Version : What do you do for a living?
Seeming as its all getting a bit heated today, I thought I'd start a nice warm fuzzy new thread.
What do you do for a living? I'm curious. Please take a minute to tell us your job title, what you actually do, and what you like and hate about it.
I'll start:
I'm UK webmaster for Infogrames. This means I made this website (with some help, see the credits link at the bottom,) and I spend my time either writing new things to add to it (patience!) or moderating this board.
I love programming and making cool stuff for the internet out of nothing. I don't particularly like having to act like a scholteacher with some of the "rowdier" elements here, but all in all its a good job and I can't complain...:D
Over to the rest of you..

There you go :)
Currently on the longest holiday I've ever had in my life, doing some freelance translation stuff (which is not fun but pays) and artist management (which is fun but doesn't pay)
Been a marketer for about ten years, spent the last four working for an American company where I specialised in marketing for the technology industry, though I doubt I'll proceed in that direction. :) I enjoyed leaving my colleagues puzzled - either for producing little blu-tak animals for them or for setting up a full European campaign overnight - but producing advertising campaigns for datacom networks is not exactly my aspiration in life.
Will still be a marketer though; despite having considered a career as a dolphin trainer I still enjoy my job very much, I love exploring different ways of communication and the challenge of being creative when everything seems to have been already said

I usually spend my days applying to Infogrames to get Alex fired:D
His job sounds fab!!
I work for the Computing Service at a University, and keep the students in check with a sharp tongue and a steely-eyed stare.
that means I monitor their filestore quotas, fix the things they have broken, and run the critical filestore back-ups, and a million other things besides. I'd rather get PAID to be on this BB though...

Well, I just started working as Web Programmer about a month ago so I am still learning. I use most of my time playing EoCo, learning from the web pages I see and playing Space simulator games, which are my favourite. I used to make scale model planes and go out with friends, but EoCo has just destroyed all my hobbies and social life :D
I am just an ordinary average student who studies Economic Law....

Only I do it better. :D

No - I do it better.
Nobody does it better..makes me feel bad for the rest..nobody does it quite the way I do..baby I'm the best...etc.drivel...
ps I bet you don't have to administer the Microsoft Select/Campus agreement for software licensing...yeeeeuuurrrccckkkgkghhg:cry:

Hmmmmm....
My official title is an 'IT Team Leader'... I'm really a unix programmer/developer in C(++) / perl / oracle / CGI / php / blah / blah / etc.....
I'm also (semi) responsible for 8 other assorted IT type persons (2-Oracle DBA's, 2 VB/ASP programmers, 2 unix/perl/C programmers, 1 unix sys-admin and 1 systems analyst).
We design, develop and maintain software used in house for our Telecoms company, which involves alot of arguing with the rest of the business, and sporadic periods of web browsing in the slack times.
I work too much to have a social life, and my main hobby is repaying the mortgage :grntngue:

Yeah, you're right. To be fair, you probably are the only one of us actually doing any real work.
Didnt mean to hit below the belt. Usually I aim for exactly belt height. Only some #people# wear their belts lower than others.

Hey, I'm really working too!
In fact, I think I have written about 4 lines of code in last 5 hours !:D
I was a machine operator ( I operated plastic injection machines) for a little while to make money while i was going to school ( I go to school for e-commerce and web design).
Now I'm thinking about taking an A+ course also so i can build pc's and sell them on the side.:)
I want to start my own business because either making sites or building pc's (or both maybe) because...I want make money for myself, not for anyone else lol
oh I've written a good 10 LOC today. Well, mostly copied & pasted actually :lolblue:
I did write them originally though (that was yesterday, when my brain didn't keep slipping out of gear)
Regarding belts, some #people# wear their's so high that they call foul even if someone only tweaks their nose!
[edit]
fair play to you Mr Mist....Are there many web dev contracts going in Canada, or is it as quiet as the UK and the US?
Alex wants to know what i work.
Hmmm is it from interest? 2pod hates studied people, o. k. he mock me all the time.
I*m Profi in communication because my clientel are people who wants to learn. I manage courses, workshops and trainings. I*m not a trainer, I*m a manager. I sell and coordinate courses for management-training, Computerskills, methodical technics and so on.
Why do you ask my firend?:(
Just curious. same reason I asked everyone really...
PS just noticed we're over 1000 members at last!
That's an excuse for a pub lunch if I every saw one...
it's .. Miss Mist lol :) ..and it's very quiet over here in regards to the web div..that's why i want to start an extra thing on the side ( the pc building thing)
sorry Miss!!!
I'm not sure if there's much money in building PC's either is there? All the big operators can do it at such low cost that small companies can't compete with their pricing. More likely you'd make some money doing set up for people - you know, showing them how to use their cable modem, fitting new cards / ram and perhaps a bit of training...

You know I got accused of being a student once.
Wasnt bloody funny either.
There's a pub in Grimsby called The Barge. It's a barge. Funnily enough.
It used to be the hangout for goths, druggies, bikers, punks... you could set your watch by the fights they had outside on a Saturday night.
About 4 years back, me and 2 mates walked in there looking for another mate, got halfway down the stairs and some massive bloke in a studded leather jacket pointed at us and yelled "STUDENTS!"
It all went deathly quiet, and everyone looked at us. Our mate wasnt in there. Needless to say we didnt stay for a drink.
It's all changed now though. All you get down there is students these days.
Ah, for the good old days.
