Congrats to Spain for getting through... but they didn't deserve it... they're by far better than Ireland, but the Irish lads worked their socks off and were unlucky not to score quite a few more... they could do with working on their penalties though :grntngue:
Spain are lucky still to be in after Sunday's terrible performance against ROI. Poor penalty taking by the Irish saved you. Your penalties were not much better. Terrible tactics as well.
Frankly if that was a good match in your opinion, you pose no threat to any other team who reaches the last 8....

now, coming from you sir, that is an immense compliment!
Honestly though, throughout that game yesterday, I was thinking wouldn't it have been nice if we could have met Spain instead of Brazil / Belgium. Nothing they did blew me away. Admittedly the second penalty was mildly unfortunate, but their tactics were poor, none of their stars shone, and their penalty taking was the slightly better of a bad job. Sorry folks, but I really wouldn't take the odds on spain for now - thoroughly underwhelming.

It was not a good match by spain, that's for sure, but against terrible odds (and even some stupid substitutions by the coach), spain won Eire, who I do not think have played better than spain. Eire attacked more, true, but only by long balls to their gigant striker during the second half. We were unlucky with some small injuries in-game and forced to make some substitutions. In fact, I am still wondering why the hell coach make Albelda play when he was injured and we had another good player, Sergio, in the bench. When extra time started, Albelda's injury went worse and couldn't came back to pitch again, so Spain played with 10 all extra time. But not only that, also Luis Enrique injured in extra time and played until the end as he could. About that penalty issue, Eire had two chances and wasted one, sorry, is not our fault if they do not score that! I really think the second penalty had to be awarded to Eire, but after have given them the first one, the second may not be awardered. And after all this you are telling me about luck? who the hell had luck? about tactics and star players? Sorry, there are some match you have to win by talent, when playing another talented team; and others you have to win by hard work, like this one. It was a really hard match for both teams, the players were really tired at end of normal time and had to play extra time! Very few teams remaining in the world cup would have been able to play so hard with eire yesterday.

Being spanish by nature not origin, you are short on the History front. Eire is Irish for Ireland, one country north south together. Hmmm thanks. Between 1932 and 1948 Ireland was known as EIRE!, then it became the Irish Republic. The name Eire is used only to identify this nation through official Irish speaking terms. Not by other nations that dont understand this native language.

Basically I call it Eire as in the offcial world cup page where you can see the results you can read Eire, not Irealand neither Republic of Ireland or whatever it is the name. Also I find usefull to write the short "Eire" word rather than the whole "Republic of whatever".
A final quote, everybody is quite good knowing their own history but I bet my neck you know nothing about my country's history as I might know little or nothing about yours
You think YOU'VE got problems?
How do you think it is when a foreigner asks a Brit to describe the current and historical distinctions between Britain, Great Britain, The British Isles, and the United Kingdom...

Anyway, as to the histories of Ireland and Spain, I'm surprised you didn't mention a more obvious link.
The Irish Celts are generally though to have come from Spain (as part of the general migration of the various Celtic races across Europe from Asia). According to tradition, their king Milesius is the one who gave them their name, the Milesians; they sailed from Spain and conquered Ireland by defeating the Tuatha de Danann.
Whatever the truth of the mythological side of it, the Celts of around 2000 or so years ago were almost certainly from Mediterranean Europe, though of course things have been altered by the subsequent two millennia of migration and invasion from northern Europe and Scandinavia, particularly the latter. They settled extensively – Dublin was once a Viking city, just as York in England was.
Nationalistic pride is all well and good, but you shouldn't let things get out of proportion, and it doesn't help if you start insulting people just because they use the generally accepted term of 'Eire' for the Republic of Ireland. As WingCommander said, he's only using the name that was displayed on the Internet about the World Cup results.

For heavens's sake, this is getting childish! :confblue:
Yes, Eire is the Irish name for Ireland, but, as I'm sure you're perfectly well aware, most people around the world who use the term equate it with the Irish Republic; you only have to search the internet to see that. It's the same with Britain/England – even English speaking countries like Australia and the US use 'England' when they should be saying 'Britain'.
If you insist on making a point of it, just try searching google.com using the parameter
"world cup" eire
and see how many hits you get. It's hardly surprising WingCommander saw one, especially on a Spanish website.

He's being sarcastic – the Sex Pistols did a song called "God Save the Queen" (at the time of the Silver Jubilee I think). Being an anti monarchist, I agreed with the concept but I thought they were a lousy band.
"Never Mind the Bollocks, It's the Sex Pistols" was the name of an album (their only one, I think).
Having only just left school at the time The Sex Pistols emerged I can remember the punk era well enough, but there were a lot of far better bands than The Sex Pistols, who relied on their shock value rather than their music (or even their lyrics, for that matter :rollani: ).

A wee question.......................................... .................................................. .................................................. ......................................
Tainted Love was that not a song by Marc Almond?
Well I certainly thought it was... but apparently his was also a cover version:
Written by Ed Cobb, a member of the squeaky clean 50's pop group the Four Preps, Tainted Love was first recorded in an intensely soulful version by singer Gloria Jones in the 1960's. In the 1980's Soft Cell recorded this simple, slightly trashy synthpop version. There, I bet you all really wanted to know that, didn't you?
