View Full Version : Teleportation Fact or fiction??

It is a long way from Star Trek, but teleportation -- the disembodiment of an object in one location and its reconstruction in another -- has been successfully carried out in a physics lab in Australia with a beam of light.
Scientists at the Australian National University made a beam of light disappear in one place and reappear in another a short distance away.
The achievement confirms that, in theory, teleportation is possible, at least for sub-atomic particles; whether it can be done for larger systems, such as atoms, remains to be seen.
The more likely applications will come in telecommunications, enabling much faster transfer of data and the use of encryption that can never be broken.
The problem with "teleporting" large objects, such as humans and animals, would require knowing the precise location of every atom and molecule in the object -- which are constantly moving -- disassembling them for teleportation and then reassembling them at the destination point; something today's computers simply cannot accomplish.
The ultra-fast computers of the future, however, will be based on beams of light that exploit the strange properties of the sub-atomic or quantum mechanical world.

Sounds good, but I think that human teleportation is nearly impossible. Even if it si possible to know the exact location of all of our atoms, will our memories, thoughts, feelings, etc will be teleported with our body? We still don't know the way we store that data on our mind...

But if none of the atoms are moved out of place from each other everything should go back fine in theroy

That is going to be one of the greatest questions of humanity... but, can sub-atomic particles store any kind of information? and if they can't.... how is storaged then? great questions... no awnswers yet, but a great scientific breakthrough anyway!!

It's still risky however-even if you know how atoms are arranged in a living organism, there's still the chance of it coming out deformed.
But,if that's possible, then it would render a lot of things obsolete.

As I understand it, the results of this experiment have yet to be confirmed by independant scientists.....
The whole thing reminds me of the 'cold fusion' excitement a few years ago.... They couldn't reproduce the results :frownblu:
Whitewolf

Cold Fusion?What was that?

Understudy, you are mean.. :rollani:
The ColdFusion fiasco happened when a couple of scientisits said they had created a cold fusion reaction ( ie the same kind of reaction you get in a nuclear reactor, but without the 3 billion degrees centigrade, and the production of massive piles of radioactive waste. It was unfortunately a big pile of poo...
This Teleport thing wasn't entirely successful either - the combined laser/radiowave was NOT reconstructed successfully. The radio wave survived, but the laser "did not survive reconstruction". More tweaking necessary methinks....

Ahh,I see....
Apparently, someone wants to send a subatomic particle through time.I think he's probably trying to do it the same way as the teleport thing.
Warspite
19-06-2002, 11:01
the big question is ...why?
What use would a time-travelling sub-atomic particle be anyway? It won't even be able to take a video camera with it... :rollani:

well, you have to start somewhere.
gotta start small, sometimes.

A friend of mine think that, since you probably can't track the subatomic particle anyway, the scientist can go claim whatever he wants.

so i could claim i've teleported a quark using nothing more than a small mouse, some cheese, and a sledge hammer?

If you had some incredibly complicated machine and go about spouting nonsense about it,then maybe.lol
Regarding the use of teleporters in sci-fi stories, one thing that few people seem to concern themselves with is "what happens to the original?"
When (or rather if) such devices are ever described in the stories, they don't usually speak of a person being transported as such, but of the person's physical structure being analysed, this information being transmitted instantaneously to the receiving station, then an exact duplicate of the person being assembled there. No matter is transmitted only information.
This leaves the rather unsavoury question of what is done to the person as he stands in the teleporter at the transmitting end, after his 'information' has been sent... or, for that matter, if he simply remains there, while his duplicate walks out of the teleporter at the other end.
An extension of this is that the process could be used to produce an indefinite number of replicas (in the same way as sending multiple copies of an email, or whatever). All sorts of thorny philosophical problems could arise out of this one, particularly where people are concerned.
This also applies to inanimate objects there is an unwritten assumption that the matter transmitter/receiver is able to 'assemble' any atom or molecule it is required to. In principle, you could use it to reproduce anything, however valuable or rare the original may be... there's almost no end to the number of weird possibilities, yet, disappointingly, these points are only occasionally explored in sci-fi.
Whitewolf
19-06-2002, 13:50
And I suppose that's a good thing.
If what those Sci-Fi books say is true, then a teleportation device could be used to clone people or things, and the way it is now with cloning,well....
And if it is used to duplicate objects, then 'valuables' would become...common,although it can be used to duplicate useful stuff, like food and whatnot.

there was a debate a while back about the religious implications of transporter technology in Star Trek.
the arguement goes along the lines of:
"The very first time you transport, you cease to be the original you and become instead a mere copy, assembled as is from various molecules handily lying around for the task. An exact replica, but no longer the bona fide original. So you arent you any more, you're something else."
which raises all sorts of questions about life, the universe and everything.
even from a scientific point of view, transporter technology in star trek cant be justified from a moral point of view, since the only thing being transported is the data about how your various bits should go. the person involved doesnt actually move at all.
something to think about

Other thing I have been thnking of is that even if your molecules are transported, or duplicated or whatever, the new creation would be alive? Life seems to be more complicated that a muscle sending blood to the rest of the body and a brain emiting electrical signals... Is just like Frankenstein monster, we may can construct the body but how to make it live?

One good point i feel nobody has touched on yet - if transporters get invented, I'll be able to afford a new Aston Martin :bounce:

Which is a slightly different old kettle. Of fish.

I'm going to do something unusual here and save Diablo from his own bad english...
The word you are looking for Diablo is "spawn" not "sporn".
Hence your brethren would be "hellspawn".
Hey ..I only wrote it once wrong... SPAWN !
...and more importantly it gave us the chance to make a long, rambling thread out of it... :rollani:
As a matter of fact it's slightly more complicated.
Spawn is brood or offspring the (young) creatures themselves. So if Diablo says his sporn is for making smaller versions of himself, then I think he must mean his sperm.
Hellsperm results in Hellspawn... with an option of Hell's Porn at a later date. :bigeye:
How does that sound? :rollani:

Nearly right Minos.
Diablo watches Hellsporn, produces Hellsperm, which creates Hellspawn.
See?
Like Eric the Half-a-bee, but not as polite.
Better! But the sperm on its own... no, let's not let this get out of hand... ahem...
