View Full Version : Tempest 3000 for GameCube, s'il vous plait?
Hello.
I am the web from the game Tempest. You might not have heard of me as I am quite old and only tend to be remembered by a few of the older gamers out there. But what memories those are.
I remember the time I used to give them such a good reason to spend their pocket money at the arcades. That really made me happy.
A few years after all this, a man called Jeff Minter (http://www.llamasoft.co.uk) took my very game and gave it a new lick of paint for the Jaguar console - made by the game's creator Atari. Tempest 2000 (http://www.ataritimes.com/jaguar/reviews/rev_t2k.html) turned out to be one of the finest games ever made. A few years later on again, he made Tempest 3000 (link1 (http://www.classicgaming.com/features/articles/t3k/), link 2 (http://www.nuon-dome.com/t3krev.html)) for the NUON DVD player - which was even better!
The thing is, people have forgotten how good a friend the web is. How much fun you can have playing Tempest. Just how good it feels to shoot those demons I keep spawning.
I love my job. I like making video game players happy by giving them things to shoot.
Please, Infogrames, can you please ask Jeff Minter (http://www.llamasoft.co.uk) to make a new version of Tempest for the GameCube or other modern system. I've got a few more demons in me yet.
Yours,
The Web
ps: I am currently located at the GAME ON (http://www.gameonweb.co.uk) exhibition at The Barbican gallery. Come and say hello if you're in the area. I promise you'll have fun.
Having seen the recent TV adverts for ATARI product (VRally), and having followed the general ground swell surrounding Tempest 3000 I fully support this initiative.
Here are several valid reasons why Infogrames should consider supporting this effort:
1) Tempest 3000 - is perfectly aligned with the brand equity of Atari and will only enhance this valuable asset for Infogrames.
2) Tempest 3000 - even with the extremely limited circulation it had in NUON form still managed an incredible showing in the 2001 EDGE awards including 2nd place in both Graphical Achievement and Audio Achievement.
3) There is a ready made market for this product among hardcore gamers. Check out the extremely active discussions in both the EDGE online forums and the Llamasoft forums (www.llamasoft.co.uk).
4) Jeff Minter the author of Tempest 3000 (and 2000 before it) is extremely willing to produce a version for modern, mainstream console. And I am sure the conditions (such as artistic freedom) would be easily negotiated.
The ONLY criteria most of the people clamouring for this game would insist on is that Jeff Minter does the actual coding and has complete freedom when it comes to the gameplay and the look and feel.
So why doesn't someone in power at Infogrames at least make the call to Llamasoft to start the ball rolling.
"And while your there have a look at the current work in progress that is GridRunner++ to see raw gameplay at it's absolute best!"
I'd like to throw my support behind Sty, and call for theweb to be re-introduced to mainstream society (he's been in a cold, lonely place for far too long now).
Seriously, T3k on the GameCube would certainly see me making a trip to the ATM and represents fantastic use of the ATARI brand.
I want it, Jeff wants it, you want profit - am I wrong or is this Win-Win??
Hello!
It really warms my vectors to see that there are folks that remember me and would like to see me spawn demons once again on the Nintendo GameCube.
I look forward to making your reacquaintance.
Yours spawning,
theweb

Hi all,
I thought I'd post a notice of my support for the cause - let's see Tempest on the GameCube
I've also just been reading the lastest (Friday 28th June) MCV where there's a big feature on Infogrames detailing their new/ATARI commitment to content and pleasing the consumer (everybody) rather than just 'gamers' (not everybody).
Key names featured are:
Bruno Bonnell (President & CEO)
Larry Sparks (Global Marketing Director)
Pascale Vermeerbergen (European Marketing Director)
We need to contact these people! Please, if somebody at Infogrames reads these message get in touch with me.
I've just finished a quite organised campaign (http://www.ewtoo.org/~matt/sensi/) to get Sensi Soccer converted to the GBA. The result of this is uncertain at the moment, but it has raised awareness and gained over 1000 signatures so that has to be good.
I'd be up for doing a Tempest 3000 for GameCube campaign if there were enough people up for it. What do you reckon?
bye,
matt
Yet another message to add support for Tempest 3K on the Gamecube (or any other next-gen system for that matter).
And we're not alone. There is a groundswell of demand for this game at the Edge forums. See: http://forum.edge-online.com/viewtopic.php?t=1089&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
Let Jeff Minter develop it and watch (i) the cash pile in (ii) The Atari brand cross the retro divide whilst retaining all the values associated with it.
Not getting this game developed and published would be plain stupid.
Infrogames you dont realise how much we want this game, is anybody listening i hope so, so-one reply anyone.
tempest for the cube my mouth is watering
Put it this way, at the moment I don't own any of the current Next Gen Consoles (unless you count the Dreamcast) and don't have any immediate plans to buy one. BUT, If Jeff Minter produced Tempest 3000 for the GameCube I would by one tomorrow.
Hell, I've just made the effort to register on this site just so I can post this, and I probably won't post here again.
Come on, if anyone at Infogrames reads this forum and cares about the Atari name then do the decent thing and give Jeff a chance to give Atari a game it deserves.
This would not be a gamble - Tempest 2000 sold more carts than any other Jaguar title. That's pretty impressive when you consider that cybermorph was bundled with the console for most of its short life!
How much can it cost to give one man a development kit, a good salary for 18 months, and a small percentage of the profits? Compare that to the cost of running a whole development team for "generic FPS 4b".
People who know what Atari stands for are excited to see the name in lights again, but lets be honest, yet another rally game with pretty graphics does not do the brand name justice :frownblu:
Hello again,
I have just had a small article from EDGE about Jeff Minter read out to me. Thank goodness mainstream press has picked up on my plight to make the masses happy once again.
Hopefully see you soon.
