If thats not ammo, I dont know what is.
Usually a hex editor is used for editing small files that you can't alter with a text editor.
A text editor such as Notepad only displays standard text characters; broadly speaking, ones you can type in directly from your keyboard.
However you sometimes want to alter a file that uses other characters – there are 256 in the full 8-bit character set. This is often the case when people want to 'hack' game save files to increase the amount of ammo they have or something similar. Files of this type may use any of the 256 available characters, so a text editor is of limited use.
A hex editor displays the numerical values of the characters rather than the symbols or letters they represent. The do so in hexadecimal (hence the name hex editor), sometimes also in decimal and sometimes they display them as 'keyboard' characters if they are recognisable ones.
Provided you know which characters you want to change, and what you want to change them to, it is quite simple. In the case of cheat codes it's usually explained by whoever describes the cheats.
Probably the best thing to do is to download a freeware hex editor from one of the shareware/freeware websites and read the instructions – it ought to become clearer then!

Henriette, Please ignore 2potscreama - he has run out of Lithium, and his illness makes him say things he shouldn't .
A Hex Editor, in its most basic form, would suggest to me a tiled-map based game ( we would call the grid tiles Hexes) and the Hex Editor would let you design your own map sections. There is one on Civ3 for instance (and a zillion other games).
I used to use the Hex Editor on a game called Steel Panthers, but then realised how completely sad I was and have never touched one since
*After reading the reply from Minos above, I feel there is only one thing I can say " Hi everyone. I am really stupid."
Thanks for listening*

Henriette, Please ignore Warspite - he has run out of coal, and this shortage makes him believe I'm actually being offensive.
