Hello there. My name is Redmond Busuttil, I am 18 years old and I love my PlayStation 2.
Infogrames released Dragon Ball Z Budokai on PlayStation 2 last year and though I am certain that the development team involved did everything they could to bring us all the excitement from the TV show on our favourite black console, I am also certain that the game could improve a lot. Budokai, though a good game is not a great one but has the potential to become so. Below is a short list of four ideas that could make a Budokai sequel a true treasure for Dragon Ball Z fans and gamers alike. I hope you take your time reading this post as I had my time in thinking and writing an honest post as a loyal PlayStation 2 and Dragon Ball Z fan.
Graphics : Smoothness
Fingers up for the developers' loyalty to the show. The characters and the environments are well recognizable but there is a certain lack of smoothness in character models. Take Vegeta for example. During some of the cutscenes and closeups his shoulders are not round enough. That is only one example.
Sound : Vocals
The music featured in Budokai is splendid. The only complain is that there are no vocals. Why not put Chalahedchala (already featured in the first game) with vocals as the intro song. It would remind you of a Japanese episode of the show. That is what gamers want. To feel like they are in one of the episodes of their favourite shows!
Gameplay : Variety
The gameplay is fast and furious. The combo system is great too. I have counted more than thirty combos per character and that is good. But why not personalize each caharacter with his style? Buu for example is a crazy creature, uncontrollable. Why not include his style in his combos or moves? One could include a move where Buu launches several Ki attacks and uses his entire Ki gauge. That would symbolize his lack of care towards himself at the cost of destroying an enemy. I would like to be afraid of fighting certain characters because of their fighting style. That would improve the game a lot. (18 characters with different personalities is better than 23 with the same attacks, quality over quantity)
Lifespan : Secrets
In Budokai there are 23 characters to unlock and one secret mode. But why not include alternate costumes, theme songs, interviews with the developers, concept art and the like as secrets? It would be better to substitute Mr Popo's shop with a Capsule Corp. store where one could buy all sorts of goodies related to Dragon Ball Z (Random items are tedious, it would be much better to let the gamer buy what he wants, it makes him feel more in control of the game).
Thanks for reading this!
