View Full Version : All problems with RCT Demo here
Anyone with problems running the RCT Demo please post your problems here, including your system spec and we will try to help.....
There are known issues with ATI 9000 and 9200 graphics cards as well as a problem with AMD processors, which will hopefully be fixed in a patch.
This is a quote from David Braben....
yes the demo is based on 'beta' game code.
We are still working hard to improve on what is there, and yes, to fix any problems that come up.

This is the important bit

What would be most appreciated is if you have a serious problem with the game, to describe the problem as best you can in an email, and send it to rct3demo@frontier.co.uk, with your DxDiag output from your machine, and your Options.txt file from RCT3.
And from the same Mr B, but a different thread....
We also hope to reissue the demo - but haven't worked out the timing of this yet. I will post here when I have an answer to this.
Thanks

I get an error when I try to start the demo, I have included a *.txt file where you can see the details of the fault.
My PC;
AMD Athlon 1000MHz
512 MB RAM
Geforce 4 Ti 4200 64 MB Ram
AC97 SoundCard
Greetings from Belgium
i get as far as the loading screen for the tutorials or the play game bit
my specs are in the other forum about this

I also can post the error in WinME later.
this is the message that i get if i try to start the demo with winXP
"The exception 'uknown software exception' (0xc000001d) of the executable appeared at the position 0x0095622e
Click 'OK' to quit the program.
Click 'Cancel' to debug the program.
"
If i had not installed the visual studio.net debugger i would not get any errormessage and the game will not start.
AMD Athlon 1,1 Ghz
Gforce-Ti 4200 (including the latest driver)
512 MB DDR
DirectX 9.0c
WinXP Prof. SP2 / WinMe (it doesn't work either)
I pinched this from the US boards.....
Obviously we take any problem very seriously, and would like to help.
If people who are having serious problems, can they please run 'DXDIAG' and post the text file here, or email it to rct3demo@frontier.co.uk, together with your 'Options.txt' file from the demo folder - then that would be very helpful.
It is unlikely we will be able to reply to each individually, but it should help us get to the bottom of any problems.
Thanks,
David Braben
Might be worth a go.........
And this.....
It may be that your machines have problems with the video codecs we are using - to see if this is the problem, simply rename (or delete) the *.WMV video files in the demo directory. If this helps, then please let us know (either email rct3demo@frontier.co.uk, or post to this thread). Currently we are trying to set up a machine it DOESN'T work on, so that we can diagnose the problem...

I can play the demo and it is great.
However I have problems with lagging. Every two or threes seconds the game freezes briefly, enough to be very annoying. The problem persists on all game settings, no matter how detailed or not, and independant on the screen resolution.
My specs are:
Pentium 2600 Mhz
Radeon 9600 TX, 128 Mb ram, Catalyst 4.9 drivers
1024 MB DDR
DirectX 9.0c
WinXP home edition
I hope someone can resolve this problem as this will determine whether or not I buy the game when released.

Have you tried turning off '3D grass growing' and 'reflections'?
Im told this can help.........:weirdblue

Yes I have. There is no difference in the lagging when reflection and growing grass is on or off.
It is very strange, the lagging I describe stays the same whether Im on max detail settings or min detail setting.
I have tried running the game with all other applications closed with no result either.
Bloody annoying this is.
Lowered your resolution?
I know..Im clutching at straws here........:weirdblue

Been there done that.
Im beginning to think spyware and other malices as I seem not to be able to solve it in the demo settings.
Perhaps remove and install the demo might work - thinking aloud here.
Ummmm........run Spybot and Ad Aware............:lightbulb
Pray........:eekblue:
Wait for a patch.....

I just hope that the finalised game is ok. Aparently this is not a commen problem, been browsing the US forums, and cant find anybody with similar problems.

You get the same error if your graphics memory is too small too - does that mean the program hasn't actually got as far as looking at the graphics card before it fails?? i.e - It crashes as soon as it tries to engage Direct X?Can any of you hip young things understand error reports???:lightbulb

UPDATE from the Atari Boffins -
"There is a known issue with older Athlon Thunderbird processors where the RCT3 demo fails to run. There is no work-around for this issue, but the Athlon Thunderbird processor IS supported by the full game. We are exploring the viability of updating the demo after the game has been released to manufacturing."
SO - the Thunderbird core Athlons will not work with the Demo, full stop, until a patch is released.
This can't be the whole problem though, can it?
I had problems on a P4 and a P3, and some of the users are above had 3.0Gig plus Athlons, which are definitely NOT Thunderbird cores! At least its a a start - they are still working on other glitches, trying to find common ground between all the dxdiag stuff they've been sent so far.

I sent the email to them with all the specs and files, but I thought I would share with you the bugs I had and the suggestions I gave:
BUGS
- whenever I exit the demo scenario or the second two tutorials, the game crashes and I am taken back to windows
- when I exit the first tutorial, I am taken to the opening screen, but the graphics rate and sound are really choppy and the game seems to be on the verge of crashing anyway
SUGGESTIONS
- the path construction in this game is incredibly painful. for example, if the platform is at 18.42m above sea level, and the path is at 20m, it is nearly impossible to build an elegant connection between them
- i can see the programmers are trying to emulate the original RCT path building mechanism but there still needs to be a lot of tweaking ... it is impossible to build a path starting midair that is NOT flat!!!
- there ought to be a separate "construct piece" button for all coaster and path designers because i so often click the wrong thing, again the old RCT interface was near perfect so can you simply emulate that?
- during construction, there needs to be more informative hints on why it is not succeeding. if there is a height clearance issue, for example, can you please tell us that and highlight the piece that is causing the obstruction?
- the tool regulating the number of trains possible for the platform length is buggy; i can never tell how many trains the platform can handle until i click on the amber circle and let it test ... the train numbers do not change on the screen when i toggle the number of cars per train like they used to for RCT
- it would be nice if the ride windows showed more information - i miss the old RCT's way of presenting the speed the train is travelling in the window (which i thought was very important when you are trying to take some remedial construction if a coaster is designed poorly) and the number of quests queueing and on the ride etc
- can the path and ride heights not be in any measurement but in a sort of points system like the old game? easier to work with

Ok, I have a problem with the demo. I downloaded it from the UK site, and it doesn't even install when I try and run it. I really wanna play this game. :(
Ok
These are the known issues with the demo (according to The RCT3 team)
1) The RCT3 demo installer may quit unexpectedly if you have either of these two situations:
A – You are trying to install the RCT3 game demo to a drive with very just barely enough space for the game files, or
B – You have installed Windows to another drive other than C: drive and you have very little space on that drive.
To work around this, install DirectX 9.0c by using the Windows Update website http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com, and then remove all temporary files on your system by running Disk Cleanup (found under START > Programs > Accessories > System Tools). Next, make sure you have at least 341MB free on the target drive and at least 41MB free (for the DirectX temp files) on the drive where Windows is installed if it is not the C: drive. Then re-run the demo’s installer.
2) There is a known issue with older Athlon Thunderbird processors where the RCT3 demo fails to run. There is no work-around for this issue, but the Athlon Thunderbird processor IS supported by the full game. We are exploring the viability of updating the demo with this fix after the game has been released to manufacturing.
Thanks to nodster for this info........
Also found this..........
ATi cards - especially Radeon 9200
We have had a number of people reporting problems with recent ATi cards, especially the Radeon 9200.
This is down to the video driver. If your video driver is from May 2003 or thereabouts, a particular feature that we are using does not work properly in it - causing an assertion failure.
If your machine was bought around then and you haven't updated the driver since, and you have an ATi card (this also applies to other similar cards using this driver), then you probably have the defective driver - so you should update the driver with the reference drivers from www.ati.com.
And this in answer to the Thunderbird problem...........
We are planning to incorporate the fix in the demo in the next week - but unfortunately work on the game has to take priority at this stage, as Tim says. As I've said in another thread, I will post when we know for sure when this will be - but we expect it will still be significantly before the commercial release of the full game.'
Both posts from David Braben...........
quick question about the ATI Cards Drivers on www.ati.com. I have search all over it and their is so Drivers for the 9200. The closest I can find is called the "Radeon Family" which I assumed would include the 9200 but no, lol. Check this out - http://www.ati.com./support/drivers/winxp/radeonwdm-xp.html?type=xp&prodType=graphic&prod=productsXPdriver&submit.x=16&submit.y=11
Are their anyother theories we could try?
Ok downloaded the "Radeon Family" driver download to see if it works with the 9200. I will update you when I test it.
If you do get this driver make sure you install the .Net Framework first.
Use this link to get the .Net Framework = http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=262D25E3-F589-4842-8157-034D1E7CF3A3&displaylang=en
Have you removed ALL the previous driver(s) from your system?
If not it can lead to problems...........you could try this.........
http://www.driverheaven.net/cleaner/
I take no responsibility if it screws up your system........:confusedb
So do it at your own risk..........
don't worry did that already, i removed the previous driver, and installed the "Radeon Family" and the demo worked amazingly....... For 20 seconds longer than before (could only play for 5 second before), and those extra 20 second where amazing, the game looks really good, I wish I could play it for more than 25 seconds though. :madred:

I gave up on ATI cards years ago - I always thought the driver installation was way too unreliable. The install is pre-historic compared with Nvidia drivers, IMHO.
I think I shall follow you with the nVidia, i have not been to impressed with ATI. Have had many problems with their cards, even the Microsoft Plus! screensavers dont work properly, the layers get confused and overlap each other, at least the aquarium one work though. But yeah going to look into switching to an nVidia card. Are they easy to install, as i dont want it screwing my PC up.
Piece of cake..........
humm will look into this, so is it basically, take the ATI card out and put the nVidia card in, place and install disk in and you ready to go and play RCT3 Demo?
what about this one, cant find a price but will track it down, this is my new missions: http://nvidia.com/page/geforce_6800.html
You'd need to run DriverCleaner again to get rid of the ati stuff....
As to wether it would help with RCT3..........who knows?
But DONT by a Geforce MX card..........
Go for (at least) a Geforce 5700/5900.......if you can afford it......:confusedb
Or if you are really flush with cash.........

Can you imagine having nothing better to spend your money on??!!:eekblue: I bought a Honda Civic for the missus to play with last week - it cost 400 quid, and it won't be obsolete in 3 months time!!!
well that would take some saving and pulling of parents legs, arms and maybe ears, but I will certainly look into this. I have had so many problems with ATI. EA's Battlefield 1942 & Vietnam had problems on ATI 9200, some areas on the terrain would disapear leaving a hole with now end to it, SimCity 4 graphics kept on messing up with road going invisible when you panned the screen around. I am so happy The Sims 2 works. I am going to wait for RCT3 to be release and by it from this shop where my mate works so if it fails i can return it and upgrade my pc and buy it again.
Its out on.............Nov 5th in the UK.......
From nodster.....(again)
In Stores November 2nd
Hello,
In the US and Canada, RCT3 will be in stores on November 2nd, 2004. This is our official date!
We ship to stores about a week prior to this date, so those who pre-order the game may get it earlier.
In Europe the game will be released on November 5th.

why do the americans always get the games first :frownblue
Its like Halo2 on Xbox Live, the second that comes out i am not going on Xbox Live untils it out in the UK, coz all i will hear is Halo2 this Halo2 that from the americans it well annoying, ah well.

Ok, in reply to my previous message, I still can't get it to run.
I already have DX9.0c which is integrated into the Windows XP with the SP2 integrated version.
As for my graphics card it is a Radeon 9800 pro, and I'm running the 4.9 Catalyst drivers.
And as for my processor and RAM I have a P4 2.66GHz chip and 512MB RAM.
I can't understand why the installer just doesn't want to run though, I think It may have to be a redownload.
if it wont install then, go ahead and download again. sometime files get damaged when transfering, it might be that, if not then im confused as usual

hmm i installed the demo today and i had no problems, fun game but not really my thing so i unstalled itallready :p:. Kinda weird that you guys can`t play the demo.
i have downloaded the demo from the uk rct3 site. i installed it, restarted the computer, and opened the demo. i got the following message:
http://www.freewebs.com/dbg92/error%20message.JPG
attached:directx diagnostic text file
Just after the installer has finished setting up DirectX 9, I get this:
String ISDX_ERR_NOCOPY was not found in string table.
The installer says the demo has been installed successfully, and i try to start the program. Then this message popped up:
A required .DLL fil, D3D9.DLL, was not found.
Somebody please help me, i'm dying to play it1
Im only guessing here but,.........
dbg92..........your graphics card is a VIA/S3G KM400..its onboard graphics and I dont think it will run the game. Sorry..(Someone feel free to prove me wrong...:confusedb )
TomW........It sounds like a bad install to me, regardless of what the installer says....If I were you I would try downloading it again...again, sorry....:frownblue
Thanks! I'll try it later (haven't got 40 mins spare to download now)
o well ill just stick with RCT2 then:frownblue

Ok well i prove you wrong:
This is my error i get when i start the game:
BUT i have a Radeon 9600 PRO which is a pretty fast card. I use the latest ati drivers 4.9
I DO NOT have a old athlon but a 2.4Ghz 800mhz FSB INTEL cpu.
For the rest freshly installed XP pro (SP1)
Directx 9.0C
So no issue about too low specs, amd issues or whatever.
The Demo does not run.

Hey, firstly i would like to start with fantastic demo! can't wait for the full release :) but at the moment i have some problems you guys might be able to help me with.
The problem is lagging.. i have included my specs in the attachment but im sure its something to do with the demo..i have updated my graphics card drivers so im sure that can't anything to do with it.. and my pc is only 2 months old so im pretty sure its not my end.
The things that lag the most for me is when its nighttime, and when I try to lay down paths or rides/stalls etc, other then that its fine. someone please help! lol
Thx

There are known issues with the 9200, and to be honest, its not that great a card......:frownblue
The demo does use 'Beta' code (i.e. not final) so there is the chance that the full game will play somewhat better........
If thats the only problem, why not wait for the full game and see how it plays, once the code has been optimised.......:bounce:

OK, the VIA/S3G KM400/KN400 card that you have is an intergrated graphics that shares system memory (I think :confusedb ) Thats why your memory is shown as 192 MB of RAM It also doesnt support Hardware T&L or DX9
Operating System: Windows® 98/Me/2000/XP (Windows® XP recommended)
Processor: Pentium® III 733 MHz or compatible (Pentium® 4 1.2 GHz or compatible recommended)
Memory: 128 MB RAM; 256 MB for XP (256 MB; 384 MB for XP recommended)
Hard Disk Space: 600 MB free
CD-ROM Drive: 4X CD-ROM or faster (8X or faster recommended)
Video:Any ATI Radeon™ or GeForce™ 2 with 32MB or higher; or other video card with 32MB and hardware T&L (ATI Radeon™ 64 MB SDR or GeForce™ 2 Pro or other video card with 64 MB or more memory and hardware T&L recommended)*
Sound: Windows® 98/Me/2000/XP-compatible 16-bit sound card*
DirectX®: DirectX® version 9 (included) or higher
As a general rule intergrated graphics are nowhere near as good as a stand alone card. Theyre not really designed to run the latest games, theyre just there to give you some kind of display.
You could spash out on a new graphics card, if you want to play the game that badly. If thats your choice then read this thread......

Oh dear - try switching off Norton AV or Norton Internet Security BEFORE you install the demo:tup:
Next time you get the error, Google it, or post it here Ok?

Do you have an Athlon (pre Athlon XP)?Some of them cannot handle sophisticated SSE instructions. You might as well tell us which graphics card you have, what version of Direct X , and whether you have tried the NEW demo version too:tup:
As my esteemed collegue has pointed out, there is a new demo out on the net. get it ....
HERE (http://www.atari-webcenter.com/friends/?module=friends&action=viewDownloadPage&id=146)
Its the US version so use at your own risk......:eekblue:

ok :bored:
i will try the new demo then come back when it doesnt work :lightbulb.
Ive got the weirdest problem ever, my own doing, but there you go...
Ran the demo FINE first time, like a wally i changed the resolution to a setting my monitor cant handle - now i cant get into the demo at all cos i cant see anything!!! PLUS ive tried redownloading/installing and it makes NO difference - the ($& thing seems to remember its settings regardless - ive gone thru the registry but to no avail... Can anyone tell me if there is a settings file i can manually edit somewhere, or, failing that, how to make the thing work again!?!?
Thanks

How about System Restore? If you have XP or Me, you can system restore back to before you installed the program - might be worth a try?:lightbulb
If that don't work, download the trial version of System Mechanic, and give your registry a good nuking:tup:

Clean Registry, full stop- I've never had a problem after deleting every bad register key it finds:tup:
gnipper....try this
How to Reset your Settings
If the game won't run because you selected the wrong resolution... navigate to
C:\Documents and Settings\[YOUR USERNAME]\Application Data\Atari\RCT3
And delete "Options.txt".
Go on....give it a go.....

Thank you this worked so for people having this problem should just switch off the antivirus.

If you're having problems with a quit to desktop or reboot, try disabling write combining on your graphics card and lowering hardware accelleration.
My brother had a problem where his machine would totally reboot with no warning, but updating his graphics drivers and doing the above fixed it totally!
Now to get the full game working on my machine...
