View Full Version : Modding?
Hello, i'd like to know how moddable will this game be, and what modding support would you provide?
This game looks really great, and it looks like it would make an excellent modding platform. Would be a shame if it did not. ;)
Thanks in advance. :)
I'm also very interested in this. :) It would be nice to hear from the Dev team or someone on the inside about this!

axxel is right, this looks like it would be awesome to mod, i'm still playing c&c generals after all this time, and it's been only because of the mods.
Really? Ever play a TC called "An Act of War" (no relation! :p: )?

Are you kidding, it's one of my all time favorites! Your skins, gameplay, particle effects, your A10 suppression bombing is awesome. I'm looking forward to seeing version 2.0.

Hopefully they make this game so that you could activate which mods you want to play from a menue, in-game, sort of like Battlefield 1942 even though its not an RTS, however its really easy when you could go in options, click on "custom game" then select your mod and play!

Not only am I hoping that this will be moddable, I also hope that there will be a World Editor as advanced as the one in WarCraft III. The actual WarCraft III game could suck, but there are so many good mod maps, that people buy the game anyways (I actually like the regular WCIII game anyways though, but I am also very adept with the WE). I also hope it won't be like the one in Generals...
this is very important, would be a very good idea to be able to mod it.

In lots of games which doesn't have modding possibilities, if the community really wants a good editor or a possibility of modding, the devs follow their wish.
So, I suggest to wait and see, and then ask for it if the game doesn't have a modding possibility.

Any game that uses .ini files can modded with text pad and whatever program needed to open up the main files where the ini files are stored. Basically every game has ini files that control unit data etc. The game should inherently be very moddable. As far as developer support, there really isnt any need for it. It's not hard to mod a game using ini data.

That I do know, but I was kinda hoping for tools like those in Dawn of War. I was also hoping for a World Editor like the one in WCIII.
WCIII has the most amazing plot in an RTS game ever, loved every second of that game, although it was short. The editing tools were amazing in it though and i must agree the WE ruled all, I had hours of fun making videos of ambushes then making a mission for it. Although i hope it won't be like Mods for CNC:G where you had to mess around unpacking them into the exact files, sometimes that happened but sometimes you had installed. They should offer a installer pre done which will exact out what you tell it to and put it on a list to choose from in game for mods.

They should make it so that when you are in game (In the main menue) you can click on drop down list of the mods you have and just switch to them in game, not like Generals. In generals most of the mods you installed you had to uninstall to play the original game. And like you said, some didnt come with installers, so later on you would go to take those files out, and you would forget which ones they were and where they were.
Hey, PCTeen1, nice to see a fellow Generals modder around here! :D
Lynx from Dee. :)
Indeed, being able to switch mods from a menu would be a very nice touch as well.
Modding does help sell games, its proven. People will buy a game they would otherwise not have, just to play a mod. So game devs, support us modders, it'll be worth the payoff in the long run. ;)
indeed sometimes one mod will sell the game overall *Cough* Half-life, Counterstrike *Cough*

Half-Life didn't need CS to own... IMO anyways.
Anyways, I hope AOW's modding is as versatile as ZH's was.
I know, Half life was ruly on it's own but you see my point.

If there was a WCIII WE and a DoW Mod Package, that would suit me fine.
WCIII spoiled the RTS modding community. The world editor is SO awesome thaht it'd be difficult for ANY game to come up with as great as that:( ...

I'm curious as to the overall moddability of Act of War, although otherwise to me it looks like another generic ultra-modern 3d RTS title.
What I'm really interested in knowing, is what sort of archiving system AoW is using (is it a newer and unheard of archiving system, or an existing well developed one?).
What sort of architecture are we dealing with? I'm assuming that if anything, it will be a soft architectural script type, most likely something fairly non-powerful like ini editing.
What sort of tools are likely to be officially released by Atari / the AoW team to support editing of the game?
What other twiddly features might we be interested in as modders?
Oh yeah, and, am I the only one to have found the "11_Bonus Material" thingy hidden on the main website? :biggringr

I read that a Map Editor program will be included, im assuming it will be on the scale of the Generals one, which has fulls scripting (triggers) support as well as obvisouyl map making + unit placng etc..hopefully evryhting needed to create a mission, and hipefully also the tool the Devs used to create their mission, as in Generals and Zh.
