View Full Version : ATI Problem - Ingame crash

Hi All

Being an enthusiast PC gamer, dedicating every cent I earn into my PC's hardware and software, I buy and play plenty of the newest games available.

The problem I am getting is pretty much the same described by Wondermark, Phod and Astartes :

Game starts up fine, loads fine, plays fine. Even the first few ingame video sequences don't cause any problems... then all of a sudden, after 30mins or so, just before or during a movie clip, picture freezes, sound carries on for another 10 seconds, then screen goes blank, sound still playing followed by a 320x220 size pixel glitched image on center of screen and a BZZZZZZZZZZ sound. I hit the reboot to get out of it.

I have tried every trick I know including all the tips on the US and UK forum to no avail... this is an odd problem.

The dev at hand by the name of Screetch surely must realize that this is not a hardware, nor a software problem, but directly related to the game. Yes - games can cause a PC to reboot... all it needs to do is force a command that exceeds the tolerance level of the hardware or the capabilities of that hardware.

I have plenty of programs that can do exactly that... i did not find an issue like this in a game lately thou. Althou there were similar forced restarts in the past years, which were eliminated by patches mainly.

I am not one for bringing back this game to the shop, as I am enjoying the gfx, sound and 24 like fast paced action of the campaign ( 24 - Jack Bauer etc. ;) ) I do hope this issue will be fixed with the upcoming patch althou I saw no mention of this problem in the brief of Patch2. Otherwise I will continue playing, saving every minute, resetting and continuing after that... i like this game OK !!! ;)

To assist the trouble shooting, here are my systems specs :

CPU : AMD FX-55
M/B : Gigabyte K8NXP-SLI ( Bios Revision F6 )
RAM : 2x512MB Corsair XMS LL
PSU : Thermaltake PurePower TWV 500W
DISPLAY : HIS IceQII ATI X850XT PE 256MB DDR3 ( Catalyst 5.4 )
SOUND : Creative Audigy 2 Platinum
HDD : Western Digital Raptor 76GB SATA ( Boot Drive )
Western Digital Raptor 36GB SATA ( Backup Drive )
2x Hitachi/IBM Deskstar 250GB SATA ( Storage Drives )
CD : LiteOn DVD/RW SOHW-1633S

LOL.. I know double posting doesn't usually go down well with admins, but now I'm truely stuck :

After capturing Zhakarov at the end of a russian campaign mission, the video starts playing : ...Zhakarov - "I am a capitalist" , Richter - "You are an asshole" ...a few seconds later it freezes and crashes. Tried it 6 times now. The furthest I got was, they are in the US and Richter knocks out Zhakarov and puts him in the car.

Question 1 : How much longer is the clip after getting in the car ?
Question 2 : Is there any way to access the movie sequences through windows ?

Yes - games can cause a PC to reboot... all it needs to do is force a command that exceeds the tolerance level of the hardware or the capabilities of that hardware.

Drivers assert that a command is valid regarding the available hardware so normally a game cannot make your computer freeze or reboot. It seems to me that it's a driver problem, but can't be too sure. I'm open minded ;)

i'm checking right now, i'll come back later (i hope i find a solution til then :( )

What if the game exploits a flaw in the driver ;)

I actually manually reboot, because it freezes up and gives me a high pitch buzzing...

Haven't tried putting the patch 2 on yet, because I don't want to loose my campaign... or can I patch and somehow continue through a chapter selection ? Will that info stay ?

Thanx 4 your time... looking forward to a solution. This is a truely awesome game, and I hope this issue can be solved.

have you installed patch 1? in that case your saved games won't be lost : )
if you just have the out-of-the-box version then your saved games will be lost.

Never installed 1b because I heard so much trouble regarding it... downloaded it thou and i got the washington map that comes with it. Now tell me... does the washington map work with patch 2 ?

Ok... so saves will be lost... what about the chapter selection ?

Reading your post it looks like you already know what will fix your problem (only a patch). Chances are, you are right. However, you have a PC with very young equpiment in it and might as well be hit by a driver bug.

First of all, get rid of the Norton stuff while playing (atleast when you are not online).

Secondly, there are two threads, one for ATI cards and one for the Audigy, that discuss problems with these cards. See if you can find an answer in there.

Also, I recommend you install SP2.

Just in case: Is any of the components being overclocked?

Sven

screetch
14-04-2005, 15:06
chapter selection will be OK.

As for the problem, it SEEMS to be a directx bug (not sure though) along with ATI, we're trying to contact both ati and directx but it's not easy :-(

You can try to disable audio acceleration (audigy + directx = bad mood computer too)

screetch
14-04-2005, 15:14
and washington map is OK too with patch 2

Thanx 4 your assist once again...

Sdack : Don't you find it strange that this "driver bug" only causes havoc in this game ? Since I put this PC together I played HL2, Doom3, Panzers and Evil Genius... no probs. I have disabled Norton, SP2 is a mother to download. No, I am not overclocking... Frankly - I don't think I should have to ;)

Screetch : Tried the audio acceleration trick - no go. The problem might lie with the ATI trying to force pixel shader through the video

I am able to continue playing through the chapter selection, but I will start from scratch... now that I know how everything works. That Freedom temple map works too... weeeeeeeee ! And I got that Alcatraz with the patch... all seems fine so far - no crash yet. May this patch have solved it ? ...to be continued.

Thanx again

ARGH !!! What now !! Everytime I try to start a new campaign and it starts loading Libya it comes up with this :

AppName: actofwar.exe AppVer: 0.0.0.0 ModName: actofwar.exe
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 013bdae7

I changed nothing ! I can still play via chapter selection and engagements...

screetch
14-04-2005, 16:58
During the loading of lybia?

and are the videos OK with the new patch?

Burntime
14-04-2005, 18:07
Well... the libya map was causing the prob during load up. My save games were gone after patching but my profile was still there. Then i deleted my profile and recreated it... it worked ! That problem solved. I could play Lybia

Having almost played through the game before ( up to mission rescue president ), i skipped all the vids pressing ESC. Then in mission 3, guarding the American Embassy, this rendered ingame clip of the ambulance speeding to assist comes up and freezes up the game. Forcing me to reboot.

EDIT : After reboot this message comes up ( 3rd time now at that exact scene/ video) :

Computer restarted after an unexpected shutdown. Microsoft Windows detected a possible device failure.

The driver for the display device was unable to complete a drawing operation.
Please check with the device manufacturer for a driver update.

Please tell Microsoft about this problem.
The display driver for RADEON X850 Series seems to be responsible for the system instability.

szAppName : Drivers.Display szAppVer : 10025D4D000B121002
szModName : ati2dvag.dll szModVer : 6.14.10.6525 Offset : AC2906EA

So No - Patch 2 didn't fix the prob... I am considering pulling my PCI-E GT6800 out of my other PC to solve this riddle... also I have the option to swop the AMD 64 FX55 with an AMD 64 3500... and lastly, I could pull a Creative Live Platinum... let's see I could also exchange the corsair with 1gb of Hynix or Kingston ram...

The game works fine on my girlfriends "chat-PC" ( :tonguegre ) which runs an AMD XP 2400 on an Asus K8V Deluxe Board with an ATI Radeon 9700Pro...

...I'm starting to wonder if ATI hardware is really the prob here.

Maybe I should start a post asking forum members that have an ATI X850XT PE if they have similar probs... if there's a guy with my card out there and it works, we could ask for his system specs and driver details... Sound like a plan ?

...according to this it's definately an ATI software issue. Can one of the devs forward all these reports through to ATI please... I will do the same from my side. Strenght in numbers :)

...what's weird thou : Since patch 2 I am having more probs - the rendered ingame vids never caused a lockup like this. Only the main video's...

I have posted in the other forum too, but I have replicated this problem exactly as written by Burntime.

As far as I am concerned this looks like a game bug, I have played at least 20 different games using Direct3D since I set up this rig, and this is the only one I have had any significant problems with. It also shuts the gfx card down completely for a second, the card then re-initialises and displays green corruption on half of the screen.

One final note: I dont force either AA or AF in the driver, I let the game do it.

Specs:
AMD Athlon64 3500+ 90nm + Thermalright XP-120 HSF
ASUS A8N-SLI mobo
Micron 1Gb DDR400 RAM
ATI Radeon X850XT
SBLive! Audigy
160Gb Maxtor DiamondMax SATA HDD
LG DVD-ROM
XP Home + SP2
Very latest drivers for everything, including Cats 5.4 (this also happened on 5.3s)

Game patched to 1.03

Please fix this, unexplained bugs like this tend to annoy a bloke so much he starts to get ranty on forums! :lightbulb

I've got the game working with all bells and whistles now... well - not all whistles !

In the advanced dispay properties I manually configured :

Anti Aliasing x2
Anisotropic Filtering x16
Quality ticked
Texture Preference High Quality
Mipmap Level High Quality
Vertical Sync Off
Trueform Off

In the AOW options 3D Sound, 1280x1024, Textures - High and Shadows -MEDIUM ( the only change is the shadows ). I might be going crazy... but the shadows actually look better to me on medium

And it actually plays everything without crashes now...

I do hope this issue gets properly addressed by ATI or AOW Devs thou...

Thanx 2 all 4 your support - lemme know if it helps.

The bug seems to come from ATI PCI Express cards (X600 to X850 PE cards) and do not seem to affect AGP cards, the bug has been reported to ATI (it seems to come from them)

thanks for the reply, I have got it stable now using Burntimes settings, but it would be even better with everything maxed out!

screetch
22-04-2005, 20:20
that's good, we'll send these settings to ATI too, it will help them solving this problkem (i do think it comes from the driver)

i think that game settings won't change anything to this and the important part was the ATI card settings BUT don't believe completely in what I say ;) i've not tested this so far

A word for PqLear : any way we can reproduce this bug? AFAIK it happens systematically with PCI express cards of the X series with catalyst 5.4, using a specific driver configuration in the ATI control center or the game setiings all maxed out (i don't know which setting affects the stability of the game)

it would be great to narrow it down to a specific setting so that we can both provide a solution for people with ATI cards and report the bug to ATI or correct this in AOW.

I've noticed I'm getting this same crash - takes a while to happen - thought it was due to excess heat at first - but during gameplay system will freeze and that whiring noise starts - PC is completlely unresponsive.

Only similar hardware is my GFX - I've got an HIS X800PE

Not search forum for similar threads yet - but will the latest detonators fix this? Sorry if this has been responded to.

could be related to ATI drivers (for pci express cards) or DirectX, we're stil lwaiting for a word from ATI at the moment. It really sounds like what most ATI problems are (PCI express bug with videos).

KnightDelta

First of all, the X800XT is NOT only an AGP card.
I have a PCI Express X800XT in my computer, so that's living proof.

Devs, this doesn't only happen with 5.4 - i've been using 5.2 for a while, started to play AoW, and noticed that certain videos cause my PC to display odd pixels and make a horrific noise from the speakers. Tried upgrading to 5.4 and, well, now it doesn't happen on *every* video but only certain ones. (I'm stuck in the San Francisco mission with the golden bridge, very early on, because I can't bypass what I think is the ending video before it crashes)

What a luck that the game runs like a charm on every aspect not related to the videos.. At least I can enjoy my Engagements :)

[Edit] Oh, I've tried running Burntime's settings and ones even lower - no change. The problem isn't with the game itself for me, only the full-screen video cutscenes. Non-fullscreen movies play fine. (Though audio is out of sync on both... using an Audigy 2 PP, btw)

anybody tried the 5.5 drivers? i know they solve the AntiAliasing bug with AoW, but i don't know for the videos and PCIExpress cards

No change as far as the videos are concerned. Well, no change at all on my card except no flickering anymore.

kobbybest
22-05-2005, 14:26

got same problem! here from italy can i ask to use english cause french is not international at all...and i got:
P5AD2 Premium
3.4 Pent. 4
X850 XT
2x512 DDR2
3x HD (1 80gb barracuda, 2 maxtor 80 gb & 40 gb)

and got same problem! Tried with 5.4 Omega not overclocked, overclocked (i don't know why but it's the only game that runs "slow" on my machine), i can try with 5.5 but they won't work too correct?
First of all, i don't know why:
1- when i first installed the game, the application bar below (the one with the start menù) didn't vanished, and the window (on its full size) of the game didn't go full screen....but that's incredible I DIDN'T NOTICED ANY PROBLEM WITH THIS STRANGE FACTOR!!!! EVERYTHING WENT WELL AND I WENT FAR AWAY KILLING ENEMIES!!! Sure i was able to complete in a couple of hours half of the game without problems (Ehy, cool game guys, that's what i was searching...i SAID!).......BUT!
2- I thought to restart windows because playing with the BLUE application bar and the window bar under and over the game, wasn't really a "good view for a so much beauty game!"

and then...

3- the game didn't restarted..ok!
4- the game restarted but loading a saved game the screen of the battlefield become black-flickering all the way i tried to move the mouse
5- I thought to start with a new profile, and that solved the problem, BUT ONLY AFTER RESTARTING THE SYSTEM!
6- No more flickering (and there i said "HERE WE GO BUNCH OF *******S!AHAHA)....till the game went freezing my pc with a black screen and sound-buzzzzzzzing when reachin the video of kingman's limousine (2nd mission)...
7- i have to try 5.5.....but i don't think this will solve the problem...

Now, i have a question...who is the man behind all of this, that need my fist in his mouth, to have created a so incredible game, CREATED TO USE AN ATI VIDEO CARD GGGGOOOOOOODDDDDDDDAAAA**********NNNNNNN, and instead, it has problems ONLY WITH THIS!!!?????!!!????

Com'on my fist is ready    :madred: :madred: :dark: :dark: :sour: :sour:

well,

*sorry to have used french on this board
*for the flickering in full screen, ATI catalyst 5.5 solves this problem, although we've noticed that going from full screen to windowed mode then fullscreen again is horrible. To solve this sissue desactivate anti aliasing or use small cursors (anti aliasing can be disabled in the ATI control center whereas small cursors can be changed from the game's settings menu)
*for the bzzzzzzzz video card the problem comes from ATI PCI express cards, we can't solve this problem by ourselves as it's not really the game which is buggy but the video driver from ATI. It happens during cutscenes and ingame videos only, i guess it's safe to launch skirmish everytime. We're waiting from a word from ATI about this, sorry.

ah ok...and what single player is for if the story in the video scenes doesn't work? i mean, if i wanted to play only single missions (cause that will be the game like w/out videos), i SURELY won't have payed this game..com'on guys..i never, NEVER N-E-V-E-R heard of a game that doesn't goes normally with a type of vga, sure if these are the last type of vga..i can think of driver problems..but that's a game problem...maybe ur programming of the game wasn't so correct, so these are the problems...but now it's too late right? now think about a flyng cd out of my window (sound like a ufo!), and i'll think twice at my 40 € next time i'll see atari...

ah..just a little example that comes in my mind...someone of u know Sacred game (by FX)?well..it has a LOT, and for A LOT i mean that also bill gates with his windows series had never had so many of errors..but the game never, never crash....u can play, and be killed from an invisible man..u can play and see ur char (it's a rpg) completely changed, ur inventory vanish after reloading, ur player stucked in a place and can move no more if u don't restart from the beginning...but it only costs 20 €..and is older than AoW, and is compatible with all GC, and is built over nvidia...not to bother..but UR game guys is really outstanding..and this problem is really...unbelievable...

ok listen me...i did this..that's kinda funky but...

first of all..i uninstalled omega 5.4...
clean uninstall
used diskepeer 9.0 Professional
did a boot defrag
installed the game
tried to make it begin w/out drivers...(just to see)...
nothing...
then..

i uninstalled
used diskepeer
installed Catalyst 5.5
Rebooted
Installed again the game
same video any time u install that game becomes boring..better if there was a gentle woman talking about sex drugs and beer
used diskeeper (7 gb of red things over my screen)
tried to start the game..
ok
1st mission ok
2nd mission ok
3rd mission ------ok
it seems that the game goes more faster than before
but there's a problem that make me think that that's game fault and not driver
1- first about all, i got no more problems with videos till now..i hope no more also later in the game..
2-during gameplay the game crash when:
In fullscreen size not-windowed the game runs till it goes windowed and i see my desktop...and a strange message from ati drivers about the Vpu recovering..the only thing i understand abt this, is that the game force the Drivers to a limit and over, as it is reported by the message..
BUT the game doesn't crash..it only stays windowed until u click on the icon to restore full size..but performance decrease a lil and mostly soon u'll see again that message..IF U DON'T GO AGAIN FULL SIZE, and continue playing the game in windowed mode, the game runs faster, BUT (-_-') it won't last forever...because of something i can't imagine the game will stop as anyone here know, black screen and buzzing sound til i reboot, AND there won't be the message by the drivers that tells you the vpu recover restored the normal function of itself...

ALL THAT I WANT TO SAY IS THAT IT'S A GAME FAULT (I THINK) CAUSE AS THE MESSAGE TOLD ME IT'S THE GAME THAT PUSHED THE DRIVER OVER ITS LIMITS AND GODDA****NNN I DON'T HAVE INTERNET AT HOME TO SEND THE REPORT TO ATI..

hope this will help

ok...i didn't solve any problem
but with this configuration i used, pc crash a little less..
use diskepeer frequently
use 16 bit configuration by desktop instead of 32 (graphic will be a little less beauty, but it will be more fast) even if in the options of the game there is only 32 bit available..(and i wonder why)
use the same video resolution as the desktop (i can suggest 1024x768), coz if u use a desktop resolution higher than the game, Vpu recovery will come in, letting u play again...but that doesn't happen always
shadows at low/medium
texture at low/medium
don't mix these 2
then Hope!
with this things applied my pc crashed only 4/10 in a hour....

there's no way during videoplay that pc won't crash..it happens and we can't do nothing..at least, this thing do not affect the system..

Hwvr all, i truly can say, that i have a 3,4 pent.4..and this game needs really a 4 ghz and MORE to be played cleanly

good luck all! ;)

I've got a tricked out PC. Just built it, and tried TWO PCI-E X850XT vidcards and after playing UT2004 maxed out at 1920x1200, or lower sometimes, and other games too, the cards have had artifacts and crashed. I swapped out for an X600XT to test, and that card plays fine. I do not have any clue as to the nature of the problem, but the 850's get HOT, but i am well ventilated. Its driving me mad ....

2GB Corsair 4x512MB dual channel
2x WD360 Raptors

Played at 800x600 (it was since 486 that i didn't..)
played well far away in the game..
texture low
shadows low..

the only thing that hurts me is that i have a x850xt and i have to use it like a geforce2.... :lightbulb

I've had this problem before and its the trouble with the sound card, not the video. I solved my problem by either, not installing ANY bundled software from creative or simply disabling it in "msconfig." The driver itself is fine, just the "supporting" software.
There also seems to be a relationship between enabling anti-aliasing and antistopic filtering. I could run creative's software, as long as no outside-application(from the driver profiles or control panels) enabling any filtering.

Hope that helps :D

NO changes with catalyst 5.7
NO changes with catalyst 5.8

Bravo atari.
