Of course there is no off-topic area here so far, but to start one right now: What do you think about having a german pope?

On BBC they said something like: "Jesus! A german as a pope."
A french who could not believe it said: "He is just a temporary."
An old woman here in germany thinks it would be fantastic.

I think, if we all are sheep and the Lord is the shepherd, then he got himself a german shepherd dog.

What do you think?

Since you asked, i will tell you exactly what i think.

The POPE..like any other ornamental peice of decoration, is a title that is equivalent to hanging a certification plackard stating you completed a
"2 week, teach yourself Microsoft Word" course.

Like the queen of england, the prince of england and any other novlety royalty, the pope is nothing more then an icon.

INfact, relegion, the one he represents..indeed all relegion no longer serve a purpose in society, as Law enforcement has taken its place.

There is no more need for morals, and threat of going to a mythical hell for sins, when instead you could be threatened with a more real, more feasable (and more immediate) reality of spending years, or life in prison for "sin" or "wrong doing".

It doesnt matter if a German is the pope, if a Nigerian is a Pope...if an Australian is a pope..it wont affect YOUR every day life in any way. It may glue you to the tv once a blue moon..when the newly elected pope might pass "controversial" propositions like allowing condoms, so "Kosher" (and i use Kosher for a reason) or Strict Catholics can finnaly enjoy having sex without the drawback (and guilt) of waiting 9 months before they can go at it again.

Heck...we might even see less Kiddy Fiddling Church stories.
Who knows...those precious 5 or 6 mins (in a year) of TV that we might watch as a result of the new Popes actions...might take us away from 5 or 6 mins spent wathcing commercials...and purchasing more consumer goods , to make our selves feel better...and console ourselves, about our pitiful and meaningless life.

Well Kiev_Axe, your synecism(did I spell that right? probably not), reminds me of Tenebra's loss of faith in the human race....which I totaly agree with.

The problem with any religion of course comes down to the people who follow it. They claim worship of God, or gods, depending on the religion in question, but instead base their lives on laws given by human beings, who of course intertwine their own prejudices into them. I myself am a christian, but despise the religion itself, which claims that women are inferior to men, and homesexuality is immoral, simply because of the people who lead the religions, deem so.

The fact is the Bible, while as I said has laws which were created by man, was also constructed in it's form by man as well. The current christian bible, was put together in the 3rd century, by the male leaders of the newly formed Roman Catholic church. At this time there were in fact dozens of Gospels, including one which was found a decade or so ago, based around Mary Magdelene. This specific Gospel preaches about the equality of women, but of course the men who put the Bible together decided to leave this particular Gospel out. We will never know of the other Gospels and laws that were abandoned, in favour of prejudice, and a superiority complex.

Perhaps one of these Gospels even gave the laws of Jesus instead. He gave two laws, 'Love the Lord your God, with all your heart, with all your strength, with all your mind, and with all your soul', and 'Love thy neighbour as yourself' (I think, somehing like that anyway). Basically he means treat each other with kindness, and that's it. Prejudice and bigotry is in direct violation of this law, and yet it seems to be at the heart of the christian churchm which is a sad thing indeed, so I will leave you with my philosophy on this matter.

In theory religion is based on compassion, acceptance, and understanding.
In practise, it is used as an excuse for the exact opposite.

Sounds like quite a few people actually believe that the Church doesn't have a political influence. Hmmm. I think some of you are skipping some of the news when reading the newspapers.

I'll make only 2 points, very briefly: I find it pretty sad that nationality should still be such an issue. You are taking the whole nazi thing completely out of the historical and social context. It was the accepted (as much this can be contested for different reasons) establishment. My father, as a small kiddie, had to be part of the Figli della Lupa (the fascist equivalent of the nazi youth). Do you reckon it was his choice? I can tell you for sure that his political beliefs are far from being in line with what the fascism offered. Personally I'm not too happy about the new pope but simply as he's strongly conservative and this will have repercussions both on a political level and as an influence on the Christian population.
Second bit - established religions are human creations, they are not the pure expression of let's call it "spiritual essence" just for lack of a better word. They are not god matter, they're human matter.

despite my personal opinions on religion and the institution of the major religions, there is nothing like a good long talk on the nature of everything.

Well I can't go into detail on this topic because I'm not religious. I don't believe in any god and I have my own oppinions. For things like the universe we just don't know how the universe was created and we will never know. I don't deeply care about catholism, christianity ect. My arguements state that if God loves us so much then why did the tsunami happen? Why do volcanoes erupt near ppl? Why are some people murderers? Why do fatal accidents happen? If he loves us so much why does he kill people in disasters. If he has the power to create them why does he? It's because (in my oppinion) No one controls the universe, no being makes things happen. So thats why I don't believe in God.

Please note that if this post have offended anyone please tell me immediatly.

mmmm....sounds interesting spitey

i think my "god" is similar to the god of religious people...

i have faith in energy, something we can't hold or see, but we assume it's there by things that happen because of it.
Energy created the universe, energy is everywhere, energy is allpowerful.

The only decernable difference, is that energy doesn't favour a human over a blade of grass...we are what we are, by accident.

volcanoes explode because energy makes them, it doesn't care about human lives, it cares about nothing, it simply exists.

we are simply a load of decisions of yes and no, on and off that create a complex object, like a computer.

But we are more than that? we have a soul?
or is it simply that the difference between the complexity of the decisions in a computer and a human, is an extra 5million years of evolution. :rolleyesa

may seem a very bleak outlook on life, that we are the way we are, so survive, and reproduce. True it's nice to have some fun in the mean time, but after death, we are no more. As a species we can try to exist for as long as possible before the energy of the sun consumes us all.

About him beeing a Nazi ... so far I only heard he was in the Nazi youth. To counter that argument I have to write, that every boy and girl, if not jewish, was in the Nazi youth. Probably only the kids of those who knew what was coming towards them and who left Germany were not in the Nazi youth or only for a brief time. The kids wanted to be in it and because all their friends were in it. It is hard to tell a child no when you cannot explain it and act according to your believe (as a consequence leave). There was also no internet and the newspapers were not as open as they are today. Leaving your country just because your hear a rumour going through your village was for most people also out of the question. So either you went with it or you left. It was a hard time and the times before were even harder.

I would rather ask myself if all this, the being a Nazi and the second war, made him turn towards the church. I have more respect for someone who turns towards the church rather than for those who only know one side (only experienced piece).

I do not think he is proud of his past nor that he is a person who needs to be. More important is that he seeked knowledge and was successful at that.

Last thing that needs to be thought of is, why would he be the last pope's right hand, if his past had been so bad?

Oh, one more thing stays to be thought about. He opened the documents to the spanish inquisition while he was a cardinal. Now being a pope, will he re-esablish it?

indeed.

i may not believe in the super natural, but i do believe that there is other life in the universe.

Statistically, there should be plenty of life out in thte universe, but the chance that there is an intelligent enough species close enough that they can visit earth, is highly unlikely...

because simply by looking at random sampling, you'd expect, that
if there was a species that close, and that more advanced than us,
then there should be a much higher density of life in the universe and we would have found at least something very basic already.

So i don't believe in the people that say they've been abducted by aliens, but i also don't believe the people that say we are alone in the universe...unique.

I would also argue that atheism is the default position, since it is generally impossible to prove the nonexistence of God. Instead, pointing out the flaws in arguments FOR the existence of God is sufficient to show the improbabilities of existence. The burden of proof lies on the person who is trying to prove the less probable. I'd like to see some evidence FOR God existing please - something that would hold up in court

That's against the essence of religion, which is faith.

I would argue that there are millions of abstract concepts that you couldn't really give evidence for unless you apply a set of conventional parameters - love, truth, evil, intelligence being just a few examples.

Gohan_ssj_flame
22-04-2005, 02:14
Well someone said that there should be at least 100,000,000,000,000 planets with life on them.

That is based on a famous equation that I can't remember the name of. The way it works is if you input certain values you come up with an answer of one, but of course you can come up with any number, since all the values within the equation are variable.

That's against the essence of religion, which is faith.

I would argue that there are millions of abstract concepts that you couldn't really give evidence for unless you apply a set of conventional parameters - love, truth, evil, intelligence being just a few examples.

Very true, you may as well ask 'If a tree falls in the forest, but noone is around to hear it, does it still make a sound?'

A very famous saying, which boggles minds worldwide, which is silly, cause from a scientific standpoint, the vibrations made in the air would carry over a certain distance, dissapating slowly throughout the earth, and so you can take chaos theory at this point, to assume that these minute vibraions, carry to a desert and cause a small breeze in the sand, creating a rustle sound which you consequently hear, since you are sitting there at the time :weirdblue

The point of God, faith and all the other abstract concepts listed by Tenebra, is that all are known simply by being felt, which of course is abstract itself. You can not prove or disprove any of these concepts, such as with the Bible, you can say the Earth is 4 Bilion years old, or 5000 years, which is true? Well if God is so powerful why can't he have simply created an entire evolutionary history for the universe, during those seven days of creation.

The point is it doesn't matter whether it is true or not, it is a matter of personal opinion. Croc does not believe in God, but does believe in an afterlife, what's wrong with that? Buddhists do not worship a god, although they have names for the essence of the universe as a consciousness. But they believe in reincarnation, as the universe itself carries your Karma with it, and after death you are recreated based on the properties of your Karma.

You have various people and cults who believe life was spawned on the Earth by an alien race. Michael Drosnin is one of those, who you may recall is the author of the 'Bible Code' books. He has found various secrets in there, which he believes is referring to asn alien race, and does not believe in God at all, despite the source of this material.

The cults who believe aliens will take our souls to a different dimension, or planet. It seems insane to most people, but no more so than creation to atheists, and evolution to the religious.

Oh great I rambled on far too long there

So, spending my life talking rubbish didn't even produce half a pint? :eekblue: I feel wronged. Life's unfair :sour:

Well you could always get a job at a brewery, that would sort you out for life :p:

Yes but that involves work of some description, besides as Tenbra has pointed out she is currently owed a life time supply of alchohol :lolblue:

Thats only 26,000 light years away, which is closer than some pubs I've crawled home from :confusedb

I already have my job(s). I've just discovered that each inane statement produces a pint. I don't recall having articulated more than one, maybe two almost sensible sentences a week for at least the past 20 years. I'm owed enough beer to set up a 4-day Tenebra Fest (to be held in July rather than Oktober) for millions of people :bounce:

No, you get it in exchange for a pint :biggringr One design but several trendy colours to chose from - pure black, almost black, pitch black, tar black.

Now, if I get sacked I'll hold you all responsible. I already woke up in my vicious feline mood (Spitey, can you throw that rubber ball again, please? :biggringr ) and now I'm hyper, music at full blast in my ears, talking rubbish, thinking about beer and organising the pub crew for tonight when I should be working. All your fault, I'm easily excitable :weirdblue

I'm sorry   I just wanted an inane statement to make a point, but then my brain went into overdrive and I ended up explaining how did make a sound using chaos theory. Of course Chaos theory itself can't really be proven, since you can also disprove it as well, so I guess in the end, the Paraoxial nature of the question remains in tact :lightbulb
I know chaos theory

Sgr B2 is within our galaxy, right at the center of it. Does not have a galaxy on its own. Sounds like you were 'outside' the time you made that statement.

Well I believe he meant the direction of the alcohol cloud, wasaround the atrea of the B2 galaxy, which itself is in the area of sagitarious, within a 2 dimensional perspective, hence this is how most galaxy's actually recieve their designation.

Well, he then has to hurry since Sgr A is the black hole right at the centre of our milky way, and just next to Sgr B2. I guess that sucks.

If I hated you I'd suggest that you sent your cv to the company I work for to watch you age 20 years in 3 days. That's what happened to Clumpstar, he's only 30 but looks 82 :( (if he reads this I'm mince for meatballs :biggringr )
