You didn't think i'd wait all day simply to tell you TDU has gone Gold did you?? As a special thanks to everyone participating on the TDU (and Atari) Forum, i thought i'd let you know before anyone else: The New TDU Demo is now scheduled for release tomorrow (Thursday 24th August) . Just to be clear, this information has not been given to any websites or magazines yet- you guys are the first. You want details? We got details right here:

ATARI ANNOUNCES SECOND TEST DRIVE UNLIMITED DEMO
- Road Test Racing Reinvented with New Demo Coming to Xbox Live Marketplace -

LYON, FRANCE – 23 August 2006 – Atari today announced the forthcoming launch of a new Test Drive Unlimited playable demo for the Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, via Xbox Live® Marketplace. Developed by Eden Games, Test Drive Unlimited has already excited gamers with its massive array of single player challenges and diverse online multiplayer delights. The new demo will be released Thursday August 24th 2006 featuring stunning new vehicles, new challenges, longer play time and a host of other enhancements to give gamers a tantalising taste of racing reinvented. Test Drive Unlimited is scheduled for release across Europe September 8th 2006.

The first Test Drive Unlimited playable demo, released during E3 2006 as part of Microsoft’s initiative to bring gamers closer to the event, was downloaded close to 200,000 times from Xbox Live Marketplace in one short week, bringing the demo in third place overall amongst all downloads during the period. Feedback from the global gaming community proved vital in giving Eden Games a clear direction to improve the quality of the final game and deliver the incredible experience Test Drive Unlimited now offers.

With the new demo allowing up to one hour of play in a 60km˛ area of the graphically polished and geographically accurate Hawaiian island of Oahu, players will have time to discover a stunning new house, three delicious new super cars – the Ferrari F430, Ford Mustang GT and AC Cobra – and one brutally powerful motorbike, the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R. Players can choose to accept one of the four new offline challenges, take on either of the two new online challenges with up to eight players racing simultaneously, launch instant challenges against anyone they encounter on the road, or just burn gallons of virtual gasoline tearing around the lush tropical roads in free ride. Other enhancements include tighter handling, snappy gear changes, customizable speed blur effects, optional in-car camera vibrations, improved lag allowing eight player online races, fully operational vsync, an incredible level of overall graphical polish, and much more.

“We know Xbox Live gamers in Europe are eagerly anticipating their next taste of Test Drive Unlimited,” said Richard Teversham, Platform & Marketing E&D EMEA, Microsoft. “Test Drive Unlimited gives gamers and their friends an innovative combination of driving skills, connected gaming where ever you are, and unbeatable graphics that harness the power of Xbox 360. This exclusive game is a great addition to the Xbox 360 portfolio.”
-more-
While the new demo gives a good flavour of what to expect from Test Drive Unlimited, it barely scratches the surface of the final game which offers over 1000 miles of roads, 90 of the world’s most exclusive super cars and bikes, and unlimited online challenges. Test Drive Unlimited is racing reinvented.

Test Drive Unlimited is scheduled for release across Europe September 8th 2006 and the new demo is available via Xbox Live Marketplace from August 24th 2006. For more information visit www.testdriveunlimited.com.

For what it's worth, how much money would the average PC user have to spend in order to upgrade a machine to run something like TDU? I mean, if you're looking at the avergae life span of a console (at current rate 4-5 years, sometimes more), then you'd EASILY spend €300 over that period on memory, graphics cards, monitors, sounds etc. That's the reason i bought my 360- can't afford to keep up with PC!!!

Well I you can't twist about taste(or how do you say it in english).

I'm happy for the Xbox owners and I hope to get beautifull vid's untill TDU is released. But I'm disappointed in ATARI because all the attention goes to the Xbox 360 and the only thing the pc gamers know is that it will be released on the pc in november and we haven't even got a demo, and the Xbox owners already get there second one.

So I'm happy :) but also disappointed :noooo: and I hope that I will become happy very quickly :respect:

1. Game will NEVER look that good on console as it looks on PC.

2. I have awsome machine (I'm using it for my job and that's how I earn money and that's how I live) and i can run every game on earth on it, because I'm a gamer.

3. It's more than a degradation for PC users. Seems like Atari is forgot 1st (2nd, 3rd...) Test Drive on 2 mb (4, 6...) graphic cards, every one of them was for PC and that's how they brake through with this franchise. And still nothing for PC users who's waiting for "peace of cake" of TDU with patient and understanding. And I really don't have it anymore.

4. EA games and EA sports is the last company who ships games in the same tame for PC and all consoles.

5. Only one officialy announcement for PC players would satisfy us all, but we don't have even that and that is - shame. (Smallest word I could find.)

I get your point :respect:

But it all comes down to what you use your PC for. If it's only for games, then I agree, buying a 360 would be worth it since you won't have to upgrade it all the time.

I use my PC a lot for many different things : work, games, moddeling, photoshop etc. So I'd rather invest some money into some hardware for my PC.

And I also kinda like PCs more...dunno why, you can do more with it I guess. And the reason why I don't want to buy a 360 is because it would be only for TDU...

Just be content that now the xbox version has gone gold, the developers will be concentrating on the PC version :) :atari:

threewayswitch
23-08-2006, 17:30
Understudy is correct on that front. As part of the TDU forum week, we were lucky enough to hold a conference conversation with one of the producers on the game. I think this might have been Wednesday or Thursday, so apologies if you missed out.

Amongst a great deal of questions raised, the first was "what kind of pc would you need to run TDU?" And the answer that came back was pretty much: if you can currently run Oblivion at an acceptable level, you can run TDU. The second was "when can we expect the PC version?" To this the guy basically said what Understudy said- not too long after the 360 version.

Similarly, the chap also mentioned that there are only minor graphical differences between the two platforms, but (and this is the important bit), there will be a few differences in the multiplayer.

For my part, i have spent an awful lot of time with both (and we have a dual-core Alienware, HD GFX card and 42in. plasma screen in the office) and can definitely say that you'd be hard pushed to notice a difference. Apart from the kids that smack-talk you over xbox live!!

Finally, it should be pointed out that producing products for multiple platforms is not a simple job. The submission and approval process for companies such as Microsoft and Sony can take weeks, if not months, whereas PC code needs to go through rigorous testing right up to (and often after) launch. As a result of this, console versions need an *awful* lot of due care and attention, because submission and approval can make or break a product.

Put on top of this the fact that, from one console to another, hardware and systems are the same- you make a game for one xbox, it will work on another. You can't guarantee that with pc's, as your AMD 3 Gig processor is different architecturally from my Intell 3Gig processor. Or maybe i have kingston RAM and you have Dell-Approved, unbranded RAM- the only way you'd know is if something goes wrong!

machak
23-08-2006, 17:43
i have dual-core Intel 3.2 GHz and 256 mb card with 1 gb ddr , it's enough, but that's not a point (because i can run oblivinion with full rendering, shadering and all other graphic options), the point is that Atari people should already announce something for the PC, something concrete and not just irelevant roumors

23-08-2006, 18:06
Thanks threewayswitch :)

You basically said what I was thinking. Oblivion was a major event in the history of games imo, graphicaly as well. I mean the map was huge, the landscape was amazingly beautiful and you really needed a good PC to make it run properly. Mine did just fine actually, so I'm not too woried about that for TDU.

You wrote : "when can we expect the PC version?" To this the guy basically said what Understudy said- not too long after the 360 version.

that makes me smile actually, 'cause over here in Europe we still have to wait until late November for the PC version ^^

Well...I guess all we can do is being patient. I guess that you didn't ask anything about a possible PC demo to the producer?

Cheers!

machak
23-08-2006, 18:19
@shadow dancer:

yes man, you've hit the point, we're talking about the demo, we know that "some day" in november we'll have PC version of TDU (but it would be nice to say WHEN in november) but the demo is point of this story, but there's other thing that bothers me, when i remember "Driv3r" and all deviation of PC version i really get sick and tired of all this, and after all that and this i hope that we're gonna get a full TDU PC version in november

the point is that he explained why they couldn`t announce something "concrete" in the post before yours, i would be grateful that you have at least got an answer now, rather than "when is pc demo coming/ any news on PC demo" etc and get told no news what so ever.which is all thats been said by PC only owners since the first 360 demo was launched, its frustatim=ng i know, however i am lucky in the respect that i own a 360 as well as a PC that will be capable of playing.

soryy if that went on a bit, i just felt it was a pointless post considering what was said on the post above yours. :)

Just to pull things back to the PC demo, there are no official dates announced as yet, but you can rest assured that the PC version is ABSOLUTELY as fully featured as the 360 version, if not more so.

Also, we weren't blind to the feedback that the first 360 demo garnered- releasing demos is a double-edged sword for us, and we want to get them just right!

It ain't their problem that they are waiting for a demo on pc , it's atari's fault, but hey, I can understand their opinion, I didn't had an xbox360 two weeks ago and I also wanted a pc demo. But I also share your opinion that you don't have to spam a complete topic that is going about an announcment
of a new demo for the 360 !

and with this said I also excuse myself for using the f- word with *'s in it , but hey , I was pissed ( if I can say that word at least )

oh come on machak, give the guys a rest.

there have been plente of official announcements like "TDU will be released on the xbox, PS2 and PC", "pc release is targeted for november", "now that the xbox version has gone gold, we can go forward an fully concentrate on the pc version", "the pc version is taken very seriously", "we're trying to include support for all sorts of controlelrs from clutch pedals to h-shifters."

the fact of the matter is that both the xbox version and the pc version are developed by the same guys. they can't just work on both versions at the same time or there would be no progres at all. therefore they decided to go ahead with the xbox version. maybe they expect more sales on the 'box (piracy isn't such a big a problem there, i suppose?) and therefore choose to complete that one first. maybe its because bugfixing has to be taken more seriously and as a result you already have a cleaner code to port to the pc and can then concentrate on compability. maybe there are other reasons.
as a result, the pc version is as of now still in development.
you can't start giving out dates when you don't know yet when you will be finished. november is as close a date as possible. if they said 12th of november and then missed it by a week you would probably start complaining again.
as for the driver incident, well for once i believe that atari has learnt from that, at least they admitted to screwing up.
secondly however the studio itself, eden, is also playing a role and they are for example responsible for the best/most serious installment of the need for speed franchise, nfs porsche.

there will be a few differences in the multiplayer.

Apart from the kids that smack-talk you over xbox live!!

hi threewayswitch,
is there any chance that you could elaborate on that a little bit further?

i understand that there won't be those xbox-live features like the voicechat
(although that could be handled ingame, could it not? bandwith is bandwith...

but we don't have to expect it to be cut down in any way i hope!?

Well, I'd like to apologize as well, didn't want to spam the xbox demo topic with questions about the PC version.

Thing is, we haven't had a lot of official infos concerning the PC version, so I guess we're all a bit upset by the fact that there are already 2 demos for the xbox  :wink2:

I'm sure we will now start to get a lot more feedback from the developpers concerning the PC version since the xbox one went gold!

Maybe someone should create (an atari official would be better) a special "PC questions) thread so we can all dump our questions in there, what do you think?

it should work, you have lots of RAM, which is good, TDU will probably rely quite heavily on RAM

You will be able to play it, but don't expect great graphics with tha PC...since we don't know what are the recommended specs for PC, we can't say exactly if the game will run well or not on your computer.

The devs said, if you can play Oblivion normally on your PC, you won't have any problem to play TDU, Oblivion seems to be your benchmark here ;-)

Just made an observation with the F430, the speedometer is in Km/h and the digital display shows mph. SO I'm guessing that is how it's going to work, the car they've modelled, if it is mph or km/h will remain that way but the readout will always be what you've selected.

Also it's still possible to stall your vehicle. lol

Wrong again. Windows Vista utalizes this feature, which I'll have the day it comes out.. mdr1 I can't wait to load it up on my supercomputer that I'm building from scratch... anyone that can provide a helping hand with this little project feel free to PM me...

28-08-2006, 11:53
Dj, you WONT be able to play with people on the 360, even if you have vista, the games have to have the feature for it to work first..

And it depends how much money you are spending to what hardware you should buy. If you have thousands buy the fx62 cpu

dECEIT70
28-08-2006, 11:54
Ahmed Boukhelifa said it on multiple occasions: Pc gamers and Xbox gamers will NOT be able to play together.

The reason is quite simple: until the announcement made by Bill Gates at E3, they had no idea that vista was enabling crossplatforms gaming, thus they had no time to put it in the game.

They're already talking about doing TDU2, though...

When vista comes out it will allow you to play games on multiple formats. The only one i know of at the moment is that game shadowrun and forza 2. it will allow players on pc's and xbox 360's to play eachother. still pretty vague but should be a lot of games that are going to utilise this live anywhere concept that microsoft is thowing at us. I do not believe TDU will be included in this unless they develop a patch that will allow it. Either way, it is going to be at least January until any of us get our hands on a bugged up copy of Vista.

Why does it "suck"? What skills or differentiallities do you think people on a PC will have to people on Xbox 360? Isnt there enough people on Xbox Live for you?

He probably just wants to play with a relative who is going to buy the game for pc.. Playing with your real friends is always better than with random people and if crossplatform gaming would make that possible for some people I guess it makes them happy. Anyway, my friends and I will definitely buy TDU for PC so I don't have to worry.
