With the release of TDU getting ever so close, i was wondering, where could they put TDU that could top Oahu?
It may seem silly seeing as the games not out yet...but im bored right now tonguegre :atari:

I was thinking...it has to be bigger than Oahu...or have more tarmac lolblue:

So...what do you guys think...

I reckon the whole of England would be great!!!
Monaco would be cool, many great cars and rich people live there :bravo:

A place where there are more roads than hills.

I would liek Plymouth, just because I live there, and ever since the first GTA I have wanted a game set in the good old south west. Maybe a country, maybe Germany, so you can then drive onto the nordschieffe with loads of other people, drive off, go onto the autobahns.

Will never happen though. Damn restrictions!

Dont you have just one freakin' cinema on the entire island? Why make a game on an island... with one cinema. Its ludicrous!

If you planted chips in peoples eyes, that would record everything you see, you could grab people from over the world and map their sites, and what they see.

Also, if Oahu gets hit by a meteorite or, by a tsunami... would the developers redo the island to how it looks? Mass destruction? They should do..

Some strange thoughts your having there!

It's probably to early to start talking about this stuff as we are yet to get our hands on TDU1 yet but why not.

TDU, being a driving game, should be set where the roads are best. I hear someone saying south of France, I would agree. Through mountains and into cities etc. There should be scenic views and sights to take in as you drive. I would also like to see it set 10-20 years into the future. Obviously not with flying cars but the best decent guess considering what has happened in the last few decades. I would like to see the manufacturers release all their concept cars for a future type game as these are the cars which are most likely to be coming out in the next couple of decades, or they are the best representation of what we will be seeing. They could call it TDU concept. As well as cars it would be good if the devs could speculate as to the type of buildings and features on the landscape we will see. As well as new road systems etc. I also think a good idea would be to gather a group of die hard petrol heads to create new roads off of the beaten track, genuine driving roads which don't have to be safe, just fun. Get the ideas flowing people!

As England probably has over 100 times the square mileage of Oahu I very much doubt it would be a viable choice.

I'd go for the West Country. Cornwall with its wonderful rally type small roads would be need, coupled with Devon for some larger town areas.

I don't think the UK would make it though. They would want somewhere more exotic and somewhere which would appeal to most nationalities.

I think if someone did it everyone who owned an xbox in Britain would buy it and many more would buy an Xbox just to drive around their local area. If Tenebra can find out how long and how many people it took to create the Oahu map I could probably figure out (there abouts) how long it would take to create Britain and how many people would be needed for the task. Then I could approximate their wages to do so and the approx number of sales (in the UK alone) to see if it's viable. If it is you could then setup a mapping company with a contract from a gaming company to create said map. That's how it works in my head anyway. Being a sandbox map the games company will end up with full rights and be able to sell these rights to other game developers who want Britain as their setting, providing sandbox is still around then. I don't know if it works this way mind.

That's a good point. I think it's quite possible to complete in a decent period of time. You could even get the console and game communities interested and get them sending photos of everywhere in so it can be recreated exactly. There would be more uses for it than just games too.

The south of France would be great, whether the southeast or southwest have breathtaking landscapes, diverse environments (palm trees and beaches are nice but can get boring after a while) and a large variety of road types.

But for the game to have global appeal, what would really be awesome is if the devs worked on the california-nevada region as in GTA:SA and made it a lot bigger and more detailed : a San Fran-LA-Vegas triangle, allowing all kinds of landscapes, weathers, drivable surfaces, and the nighttime driving couldnt get any better that that.

Gran Canaria is quite big. Or Ibiza. And when you get bored of driving around you can go clubbing!

I definately think it should be an island otherwise the devs are gonna have to build some sort of wall around the playing area.

tisdalj
07-09-2006, 12:51
Here's a list of islands a similar size to Oahu:

Island - Square Km - Country
Tenerife - 2,034 - Spain
Magdalena Island - 2,025 - Chile
Bioko - 2,017 - Equatorial Guinea
Kuiu Island - 1,962 - USA
Biak - 1,904 - Indonesia
Maui - 1,888 - USA
Mauritius - 1,836 - Mauritius
Jeju-do - 1,825 - South Korea
Afognak - 1,809 - USA
Umnak -1,793 - USA
Stewart Island/Rakiura - 1,746 - New Zealand
Bathurst Island - 1,693 - Australia
Fuerteventura - 1,660 - Spain
Zanzibar - 1,658 - Tanzania
Skye - 1,656 - United Kingdom
Soisalo - 1,635 - Finland
Lesbos - 1,630 - Greece
Great Inagua - 1615 - Bahamas
Oahu - 1,600 - USA
Senja - 1,586 - Norway
Dakhin Shahbazpur - 1,585 - Bangladesh
Gran Canaria - 1,560 - Spain
Middle Andaman Island - 1,536 - India
Flaherty Island - 1,525 - Canada
Retea - 1,480 - Romania
South Andros Island - 1,448 - Bahamas
Kauai - 1,446 - USA
Rhodes - 1,398 - Greece

Now I think we can discount a lot of these due to climate and population, but I think Gran Canaria, Bathurst, Tenerife and Maui are definite possibilites.

bradin
07-09-2006, 15:43
its not just the island size thats important, but the total milage of the islands roads, so "Skye - 1,656 - United Kingdom " seems good but theres only what 2 roads on the whole island?

so much to choose from, maybe a more limited portion of a countries mainland would be a better choice me thinks

"The island of Ireland covers 84,431 square kilometers (32,599 square miles). At its widest the island is about 280 km (174 mi). At its longest (north-south) it is 486 km (302 mi). The island includes the Republic of Ireland (70,283 sq km/27,136 sq mi) and Northern Ireland (14,148 sq km/5463 sq mi)."

So Ireland would be a challenge for Developers tonguegre

How about the Isle of Wight
The downside is: 23 x 13 miles rolleyesa
http://www.iwight.com/images/iow_maps/roadmap1.gif

Another downside is the fact that the Isle of Wight is still in the fifties era.......

how about forget on where its set rolleyesa...let them make whereever they want it, built some virtual island stuff....

doenst have to be a real city/island/whatever, as long as it looks real, the roads are actually nice to drive on (seriously...the roads in TDU gave me a headache, no smooth stuff just flat 'blocks' really....ever driven a car in france at 130mph? roads are waaaay smoother) and maybe varietty in weather.

they HAVE to focus on the physics engine, the one in TDU is terrible. maybe have to original one for arcade players, but actually have one similar to LFS for sim players. will make the game fantastic.

Australian state (island) of Tasmania (bit smaller than Oahu I think)

Or New Zealand (with a ferry that transports you between the north and south islands)

Or Germany - you could have the borders heavily guarded by the cops or something? Perhaps Atari could then sell 'Expansion Packs' that open up the neighboring countries one at a time?

Or just give us the whole planet - it should just fit a 500GB Hard Drive

o'ahu island - 1 545 kmē
Earth (land only) - 148,939,100 kmē

o'ahu island - cca 7GB
Earth (land only) - cca 674 805 GB ;)

Seriously, IMO, the most reasonably thing is another great island of Hawaii (Big Island). Almost 7 times larger but much less populated (meaning less demanding cities and buildings per sq km, and more landscapes).
Imagine a million$ challenge around Hawaii belt road (over 350km), or off-road challenge up to Mauna Loa peak at over 4000m!
And of course, O'ahu would be also available, only more detailed than current one.

My guess for the location of the next TD is included few countries. But first: i think that the island issue is not necessary, coz if they do TD on the inland they can also include expansion territory or something like that, altho islands could be also a good expansion especialy becouse oahu is not the biggest island of Hawai. But i think they are leaning to other lands coz its everyone`s wish to drive on the roads they know best and the countries they are from, and that raises the question about the Marketing moves and "cash" (meaning: which market is best seller of the previous version and the best expected seller in the future), which raises another question if europe is interested enough (i think it is) to also force american gamers to buy the game (beside other game specs of course). OK. I would personaly like to drive across my own country (Slovenia that is) coz its aprox 20,273 kmē and it has a beautiful scenery from core of the alps to the Jadran sea, Pad straights on the east and unique Kras Plateau, National park with hardcore overpasses and awsome roads i only dream to drive with Lamborghini Reventon mdr1 200kmh+, ok enough of dreaming. Other countries which i think that could be the one for next TD: Switzerland, United Arab Emirates, Luxembourg, Jamaica, Montenegro, Fiji.

Keep on the good work and get the location out ASAP!. :atari:

NEW ZEALAND

yes i am scottish but having TDU2 based in england is just boring.

theres the getaway games and gta:london 1969 and i think a few other games as well.

but scotland, ireland, wales would also be good.

lots of hill's, long motorways and bypasse's, what about the isle of man as well, but i do agreee it should be anywhere but not england as i have had a real bad time with ppl from england in a lot of games.

plus the newsnight and panarama reports put england in a real "we hate scotland because they think there better than us" type of mind, i think one guy said it best which showed just how much egland thinks of the rest of the uk

"if it wasent for england you'd all be drunken, skirt wearing (naughty words in here) who worry horsess, and the irish would be blowing themselfs up begging for potatoes and the welsh would be welly wearing (lots of naughty words in here) sheep worrying (yet more naughty words)"

this is the mindset of over 60% of the english population.

what the english dont relise is that at one point in history the scottish, irish AND welsh all took over at least 80% of england when we all combined forces but we were all stabbed in the back.

i dont have anything against england except there bigotry and racist remarks about ppl from other parts of the brittish isles.

i just have one thing to say to the english ppl, before you all start blaming ppl from other countrys taking all your jobs n stuff........LOOK AT THE ROYAL FAMILY, NONE OF THEM ARE TRUE BRITTISH, there all from germany, greece, the forer yugpslavia,

but enough of this rant, to stay outta this argument i am saying new zealand because the scenery is great and its got more roads than tdu1

I was thinking start with Victoria, Australia - by the time we unlock all the roads in there they could have another state done (NSW, then QL, then SA, then WA, then TAS (and if anyone cares the NT finally).

What's so good about Victoria? Well we have the Great Ocean Road, and as I only recently discovered, we have the Great Alpine Road (which I really want to drive on but the whole trip would take me just over 12 hours). There are stacks and stacks of city roads, suburban highways, freeway, and b-roads, coastal roads, alpine roads, winding roads, dirt roads - the possibilities are endless just in that one area.

There is evidence of TDU 2 being developed, but developers don't really announce stuff - they need a publisher first, which may or may not be Atari.I'm prepared to wait early until 2010 for an official announcement, but not much longer than that.

I just saw last TG episode....what a splendid TDU location Mallorca is! I've totally forgot about this island and it's the right size (fairly bigger than the old one), beautiful landscape, great highways and heel roads...it got everything.
But it doesn't matter anyway, they've already picked the location long time ago. It would be great if the second location (besides Oahu again I assume) would be Mallorca island. Let's wait'n'see....
