Yes, this is sad news... :noooo:

TOKYO (XFN-ASIA) - Sony Corp unit Sony Computer Entertainment Inc has put back the launch in Europe of its next-generation game console, the PlayStation 3 (PS3), until March from Nov 17 because of technical problems with its Blu-ray DVD system, Sony Computer Entertainment's president Ken Kutaragi said.

But the company said it it would still release the PS3 in the Japanese and US markets -- its most important -- on schedule.

This is the second postponement of the launch in Europe, giving its rival Microsoft Corp's Xbox 360 console another advantage in the battle for leadership in the lucrative home entertainment market.

'We now believe that the mass production of the Blu-ray laser diode -- the key component of the PS3 -- at Sony will be delayed by around one month,' Kutaragi told a press conference.

'To address this challenge, we would like to delay the launch in Europe until next March.'

'And, I would like to apologize for those people in Europe who had high expectations for Playstion 3 consoles (being available from November), as well as for software and device makers, that we had to delay the launch for Europe,' he said.

However, Kutaragi said Sony still plans to release the PS3 in Japan on Nov 11 and in the US on Nov 17.

But as the technical problem with the Blu-ray system weighs on the launch of mass production of the PS3, Kutaragi said he now expects the combined shipments of the consoles for the Japanese and US markets to come in at 'slightly above 2.0 mln units' between November and December.

The company had initially planned to ship 4.0 mln consoles globally through to the end of 2006.

'But as we drive up production of the PS3 from the start of next year, we will not change our plan to deliver 6.0 mln consoles until the end of next March,' Kutaragi said.

'Altogether, I do not think this time delay will cause serious damage to our PS3 business,' he added.

Kutaragi also stressed there are no other technical problems with the consoles.

'The production of 'Cell' chips is very smooth as well as other key devices like RSX,' Kutaragi said.

'Initially, we will use the 90-nanometer technology in processing the Cell chip, but we are already ready to start making Cell chips on the 65 nm technology,' he added.

PS3 will be equipped with a 'Cell' processor, jointly developed with IBM Corp of the US and Toshiba Corp of Japan, as well as a graphic processor unit, jointly developed with Nvidia of the US.

PS3's embedded 'Cell' has processing ability of up to 218 giga floating points under operation per second, about 35 times the processing ability of the existing PlayStation 2 consoles and about two times the ability of Xbox360, making it the most advanced console.

In addition, PS3 fully supports 1080 progressive standard high-definition graphics with its latest graphic processing unit, RSX. It can also play all kinds of media, ranging from classical CD-ROM to blu-ray ROM.

Analysts meanwhile said the PS3 delay, which was announced after the close of trading in Tokyo Wednesday, could further rattle investor sentiment, but they also expressed hope that the financial impact would not be too severe.

'If you remember the time when Sony launched the PlayStation 2, many European consumers kept on buying the original PlayStation consoles,' said Osamu Hirose, an analyst at Tokai Tokyo Research Center.

'The company must have figured the effect of the delay would be minimum in Europe. The stock market will take it as negative news but it shouldn't significantly affect Sony's earnings,' he said.

Koya Tabata, an analyst at Credit Suisse First Boston, said the latest delay came as little surprise given the previous rollback and he maintained his sales forecast for the PS3 at five mln units by March 2007.

'I believe the impact of the announcement will be minimal,' Tabata said.

Sony is counting on the success of the PS3 to aid its recovery after a profit slump at the group, which last year announced a major overhaul including 10,000 job cuts.

Sony has long dominated the home video-game market and shipments of the PlayStation 2 console have topped 100 million since March 2000.

But it faces growing competition from Microsoft as well as Nintendo, which plans to start selling its next-generation 'Wii' console later this year.

Indeed, it's really bad news, and again it's Europe who's not getting it the same time the americans get it sour:

 Stupid Sony, it's always Europe who pays it
Of course I will wait for the console to have a big price reduction before buy it, so this doesn't affect me... Just hope that when they lower the price in the USA they do it the same in Europe, and not just after 4 months later...

TBH pretty fantastic news. Out the same time as Halo 3. Good Luck.

I'm not surprised, why are you lot? The original release date was March 07 anyway, then they bumped it up to Nov 17 06... which, realisticly wouldnt happen, because as usually, the American [scum..but I dont care.. are they still scum? .. Meh.] get it WAAAAAY before us.

Everyone better not complain that they get it before us, because nobody but me and some other guy complained when we found out the Americans get TDU for something like, a measley $30.

Halo 3 doesn't have a release date yet, does it? Even if it does I bet it'll delay at least once before the release.

Delay it once? I would have thought Bungie would have caught up on that problem with Halo 2. Yeh March is the expected release date. I wil expect it out then :)

right, wii it is then :)

in short PS3 is screwed in europe.

xbox360 will have been released well over a year when PS3 comes out, so people will get an xbox360 this christmas, rather than a PS3 for christmas 2008, and if they dont have an xbox360, they will probably buy a wii instead.

also, being as (preassuming PS3 for march) the xbox360 will have been out 15 months, so the chances are that a price drop will be in the works :)

Well I'm not. Until they have a huge fancy press conference like they did for halo 2 then there isn't a set date for the game imo.

there already has been a price drop. The £210 package now costs £200.

It would be foolish to count the PS3 out in any region based on a delay weirdblue

I'm not really that bothered about the delay since I was planning to wait until I could afford it anyway, but I can understand why people are getting slightly p'eed off by it. In reality it was predictable anyway, if they released it on the November release date around the globe they would most likely do an Xbox 360 and run out almost straight away (though with 100k for Japan and 400k for America it looks like they might be doing that anyway).

P.S Lwsbrck if you were originally going to get the PS3 before this announcement then for same price/less you can buy the Wii AND the 360 tonguegre

just incase you dont know, the ps3 is delayed because of the lack of parts for the blu-ray technology due to the fact that they are also trying to manufacture blu-ray players.

Or they're going to see what ideas Nintendo come up with so they can rob them. This is gold though. Pitiful Sony ftw. mdr1
