thats right, its going back, why:

My xbox has decided a nice circular scratch round the disc was required    . Lets hope game will actually exchange it for me.

questions:

Is this a sign my xbox is mucked, need to send it off?
How can I stop it happening again?

It happened when I hit guide (level 3 cops) game didn't pause, hit y then yes. When I loaded the game i got, disc unreadable, checked and hello scratch!

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Did you happen to move the xbox from a standing poition to horizonta while the disc was spinnning or vice versa?

I don't know if it means your 360 is "mucked" but I had a similar experience with my third 360, it scratched my G.R.A.W. disc so badly it was unplayable and I took it to a local store and got it polished like new for £3, it worked fine after that but still got a few more marks.

It also scratched (very slightly) my mates Fight Night disc.

It did not scratch any other discs though.

My 360 was not moved when it caused the scratch but it did spin fast as if searching for data then made a halting grinding noise.

this is weird cos the other day my screen froze on the guide then again half an hour later and it said - disc is unreadable so i turned the 360 off and back on and it worked hurrah!! Although it keeps making what sounds like a screatching noise every so often. Weird.

yep, that is what generally causes scratches like that,

*puts clever hat on*

when the disk is spinning it acts like a gyro, and will reist being tilted*, so as the console tilts, the disk will try to stay in its current orientation, and the bottom of the disk tray, and the disk will become un-parrallel, eventually the disk will hit/scrape against the tray, or more precisely, the laser casing, which has two large bumps on it, as it hits this the bumps scratch into the disk, leaving a perfectly circular scrath in the surface of your shiny disk

*TRY THIS AT HOME! take an ordinary bike wheel (preferably the front) and start it spinning, then try and move it from verticle to horizontal

(i know it hits the tray, and that there are some bumps on the part that scrathes, but i'm not sure about whether its the laser casing)

it keeps happening with my PGR3 disc

It freezes and the xbox fans increase and the disc spins more (i think) and then you hear a grinding noise.

Once it told me to put it in an xbox 360 console?

My copy of PGR3 sounds like its being read by an angle grinder sometimes. I always check the disc after seeing that video somewhere from the dude from across the atlantic whos copy of some game got a lovely circular channel dug into it for no reason at all. Thats why my 360 is no longer vertical. But the grinding still happens on PGR and only PGR. Oh an I just loaded TDU up again and the server is not availablee again, it was 30min ago.

Neither did the dude in the video, according to him, same thing has happened to a couple of guys at work. Luckily we have an independant games store that has a disc fixing machine that cost them an arm and a leg. Nice of them to only charge a couple of quid to fix a game.

well, game have returned the game and exchanged it for a new one no arguements, though said they may not be able to do it again as its the console causing the problem.

Thanks for the replies. :bravo: :bravo:
