Problems with multiplayer racing lag/game freeze.

Hi fellaz. What an amazing game. One problem I am having though is when I am in a multiplayer race. The screen freezes and and jerks about and slows right down like its got serious lag. And the voices are distorted. Almost like the game is going to crash. On single player its fine. Is this just a running in problem with the servers or should I be looking at console problem?

Thanks for your replies. The only reason I got the game was for the online capabilities. Hope its just a glitch :) :)
