Please don't flame him to death. Here comes the new generation of gamers who don't know anything about NWN
I'm not the right person to talk about it because I've never had enough time to do anything more but collecting the games, installing the one and played it lamely for a handfull of hours. So I'll leave it to the experts to make constructive comments.

CRPG game set in Forgotten Realms, which is a huge world that has been written about and built/added onto for around 20 years or so now :) Also gives the ability to build your own worlds (aka maps) and storylines with it's rather versatile and uber capable toolset. Type NWN or NWN2 into google, or heck type Dungeons and Dragons... and learn all you ever didn't wanna know :)
Taken from http://www.nwn2wiki.org
Bards sing tales of heroes from ages past, but never have the Forgotten Realms so desperately needed a champion. Years have passed since the war between Luskan and Neverwinter, almost enough time for the wounds of war to heal. But the brief peace the Realms have known may be at an end. Tension growing between the mighty city-states means the Sword Coast again teeters on the edge of open war. Unnoticed, a greater danger stalks the City of Skilled Hands. Unbeknownst to the denizens of the North, deep in the Mere of Dead Men, dark forces from across the Realms have been rallied under the banner of a legendary evil. If left unchallenged, all of the North is doomed to fall under its power.
Even in this darkest hour, hope remains. A mysterious relic is borne to Neverwinter in the hands of a lone hero so that its secrets may be unlocked - secrets that carry the fate of all the North. So begins an epic tale of shattered alliances, noble acts and dark deeds to be told across the Realms for generations to come.
Experience the long-awaited sequel to the game that revolutionised creating and playing computer role-playing games.
Use the completely rewritten, powerful Obsidian Neverwinter Nights 2 Toolset to create your own adventures, share them with friends, or run them through your adventure directly as the Dungeon Master.
Play online with other gamers and enjoy limitless adventure.
Explore the Forgotten Realms in greater graphical splendour than ever before with a completely new, cutting-edge graphics system and an overland map.
Employ new spells, feats, and advanced prestige classes, based on the exciting Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 Edition rules.
Recruit up to three companions to assist in your adventures. Improved party control allows for more dynamic tactical decisions in combat and more personal interaction.
Rediscover familiar locations and meet old friends from the Neverwinter Nights series.
[edit]Features
Like its predecessor, NWN2 will include an official campaign, multiplayer support, a Dungeon Master client, and a toolset where game buyers can design their own modules to distribute to others or to post on the Internet for online play. Some game content, including NWScript based scripts and dialogs, will be directly importable from NWN modules. Other content, like models, will not be directly portable because Obsidian has removed the old Aurora graphics engine and built a new one, named Electron, which supports more advanced graphics and gameplay elements than Aurora was capable of.
The main principles of gameplay will be the same as in NWN, although the game interface and camera control will be more flexible and customizeable and many aspects of it have been redesigned. The toolset and the graphics rendering engine have been completely rewritten to take use of technology such as DirectX 9.0 and Pixel Shader 3.0 (although only 2.0 will be required to play the game). Other much anticipated features that have been confirmed by the developers include the possibility of horses. Party control has been improved from NWN, although the exact implementations of this are not yet known.

:noooo: I don't think I like it........... :noooo:
Aphrodite pretty much explained it, but there are other things people might want to keep in mind as well.
Just wanted to ensure everyone knows that the following is my opinion.
When you want to roleplay, and I mean really roleplay, NwN (and NwN²) is the only solution I know of. There's a number of "roleplay" online games out there that are waving the roleplay flag around, but I wouldn't give it to them. The advantage of NwN is that the community makes the server run modules, the community decides the rules for those modules, but most importantly the community upholds/enforces those rules. Ofcourse there's also servers that have little to no rules, so the player will have to look for a server fitting to them, server population won't be nearly as high as those large-scale company run server RPGs (which are way too ruleless for my taste and where I see next to no RP).
Not saying I want everyone to go get NwN, cause I don't. If NwN is for you it's for you, if not then not.
Think of NWN2 persistant worlds as a MMORPG like any other, but with small, user owned servers. Each server will put emphasis on a certain aspect of the game, such as action, roleplay, storytelling aso. With each aspect follows demands that you behave within certain limits. The servers are private and non profit, so it's much easier for the community and admins of those servers to enforce the rules they set up
A game based on large commercial game servers is much less likely to ban players behaving badly or inappropriately for the setting, since they would loose money on it. The roleplaying aspect is kind of special in this case, since it requieres everyone to do it. If you've tried to roleplay in say WoW or Lineage II, you know it's virtually impossible since only a small percentage of the players around you will actually do it, and to pretend you're a questing knight in an environment where you are frequently adressed as "Dude" and is forced to party with characters called |>b00bs1002<|, is well, straining. Due to the design of NWN and NWN2, this is not likely to happen if you choose the right server to play on.
If you aren't into roleplay, you can play NWN2 as any other MMORPG (but probably with a much smaller community), you just choose a server with a more action oriented content.
