Yer, loads of racing cars who were sponsered by golf were in these colours. I think the porche les mans was and some other things, but still it is the famous colours for the racer (white and blue for the road car)

Lots of cars have raced in "Gulf" colours...

In terms of cool colours for GTs ... IF Atari does bring out the original GT40 I want them in these colours please ...

The problem with the GT in the game is that it has the American "twin stripe" rather than the single stripe needed to get the GT into the proper "Gulf" colour scheme ... personally I've had a nightmare trying to get the right shades of blue and orange ... I think I'm on my 3rd attempt!
