View Full Version : TDU constructive feedback

Hi guys

After playing quite a lot of TDU over the last month and completing all single player challenges, I thought I'd give some constructive feedback. I'm a game dev myself so know that game devs DO tend to browse forums after the release of a game to see what the punters think of it. :)

I must say that overall I enjoyed it a LOT. The recreation of Hawaii is superb, and the selection of cars and their handling is pretty good too. Additionally the GPS map is great. If there is to be a sequel, I'd definitely buy it. Now onto the constructive feedback...

- Traffic. My single biggest annoyance with the game was their being traffic in races. On any race which had traffic, luck played a big role in the outcome of a race. Sometimes I’d get a relatively clear run, other times some traffic would pull off ridiculous moves or be driving slowly (or even be stationary!) in very awkward positions and mess up my entire race. In such instances I ended up blaming the game, rather than myself, which is a cardinal sin in games. Ok, traffic is fine for cruising around in free-ride and the job missions (like hitchhiker), but imo there simply shouldn't have been any traffic at all in the proper races and checkpoint races. I often replay races without any traffic for sheer enjoyment, but never have replayed any races with traffic (Tantalus, I’m looking at you.) A case in point is the Island Tour and Millionaire’s Challenge races; even though Millionaire’s Challenge gives much more money as a reward I’ll ALWAYS choose to replay Island Tour simply because it has no traffic to get in the way.

- Speedtest races. This type of race I found throwaway and never replay any of them once I’d got the gold cup. There’s enough content already without padding like this.

- Police. They are really poor at giving chase yet if by some miracle they did catch me (such as a head-on collision reducing my speed to zero instantly) I'd get clobbered with a fine of $100k+. I think the biggest fine was around $600k - that’s around the same price as an Enzo! Whenever that happened I simply reset my console. I’m no petrolhead but still would have preferred it if TDU didn’t even bother trying to add elements from NFS: Most Wanted or GTA, but just stuck to the core driving stuff.

- Clothes. I only ever bought clothes from simply for the achievements. Since most job missions give clothes vouchers as bonuses, for those of us who had no interest in dressing our character there was therefore no bonus whatsoever for completing those job missions. Why not simply award money, and those who like dressing their character can CHOOSE to spend it on clothes? As it stands, I’ve got hundreds of pointless clothes vouchers.

- Radio stations. The songs on them are generally terrible. If Atari aren’t going to pay big bucks to license some decent tunes, just spend the money on improving other aspects of the game.

- Finding cars you own. The further you go in the game, the more that the method for finding specific cars just takes far too long. There really should have been a quick select method as part of the GPS rather than have to visit a dozen+ properties to find the car I need, then wait for the garage to load, then come back out of the garage and wait for the game to load again.

- Job missions. When doing races you can select which car you’d like to use just before the race starts, however the job missions don’t have this interface at all. If a job mission has to be done with a certain car, it’s a real pain to spend 5 minutes traipsing around all my properties just to find the car I require.

- Duplicate car showrooms. Why? Some car manufacturers have multiple showrooms with different cars at each, and each time I mistakenly go to a certain showroom only to find the car I want isn’t there requires yet more loading and returning to the GPS.

- Arrow directions. This didn’t happen often, but sometimes during races the arrow directions simply appeared too late. I’d be barrelling along a road at 200mph+ then virtually when I’m already at a junction an arrow appears indicating a 90 degree turn. Cue a powerslide 100 yards down the road and 10 seconds lost. A bit earlier acknowledgement of upcoming turns would have been nice.

- GPS route colour. I may well get a reply to the above “arrow directions” point saying “well, buddy, look at your GPS, the route is marked”. To which I’d answer: the route’s colour was far too similar to the colour of roads I’ve travelled along a lot. :)

Overall then, I sincerely hope Eden get to do a sequel and will focus more on the core driving elements rather than all the NFS: MW bling or The Sims lifestyle additions.

Thanks for reading. :)

Regards finding the car you want:

You only have to visit the nearest house, go to garage and use the left button to call up a list of every car you own. You then get transported to the garage with the selected car and can drive off with it.

I would suggest that the second garage step is not required, we should be able to select a car and get the animation for it leaving the house it was in.

I agree on most of the other points, except that I find the millionaire's challenge more fun than the round the island race. I think the traffic adds to that one, especially if you are on a bike.

Or even better, just choose the car from the GPS...

Hi guys

try driving like a nutter in real life, youd be lucky to have a massive fine, most people would go to jail

Why not simply award money, and those who like dressing their character can CHOOSE to spend it on clothes? As it stands, I’ve got hundreds of pointless clothes vouchers.

think of it though, clothes do not cost much compared to cars, you could buy the whole clothing range on the game for the price of a saturn sky, where's the fun in that

- Radio stations. The songs on them are generally terrible. If Atari aren’t going to pay big bucks to license some decent tunes, just spend the money on improving other aspects of the game

i like the assortment of music (as in the stations) however, each station should have more songs, more well known songs, and classic needs scrapping. Sweet is amazing though and fits the style of the game really well.

- Finding cars you own. The further you go in the game, the more that the method for finding specific cars just takes far too long. There really should have been a quick select method as part of the GPS rather than have to visit a dozen+ properties to find the car I need, then wait for the garage to load, then come back out of the garage and wait for the game to load again.

press LB in the garage, it will bring up a list of all your cars, this needs sorting out though, a sort similar to what you get at races would be much appreciated

- Arrow directions. This didn’t happen often, but sometimes during races the arrow directions simply appeared too late. I’d be barrelling along a road at 200mph+ then virtually when I’m already at a junction an arrow appears indicating a 90 degree turn. Cue a powerslide 100 yards down the road and 10 seconds lost. the reason for this is junctions close to each other, if you get the 'at the next intersection, turn left' and between where you are the junction you want, there is another intersection, then the next intersection would technically be the one in the middle. this happens alot at T-junctions with dual carriageways

points made. all the rest i agree with

My point is simply that the implementation of the police isn't fun. The implementation isn't realistic anyway, so neither do the fines need to be. It's frustrating to spend hours winning races and getting $10-20k per win, saving up to buy an expensive car, then lose it all in one go due to a fine of a few hundred thousand dollars.

I fully understand the instance you're describing, though I've had this problem occur in the middle of the desert with its long straights and infrequent junctions. It's possible to build up a lot of speed but only get informed of slow turns at the last possible moment.

Thanks for your input guys.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head especially with the more superficial elements of the game. I noticed that you haven't mentioned the online experience which is one area where key improvements are needed:

The most critical being that the game potentially uses far too much bandwidth. Free ride is supposed to support up to 8 players but once this target is reached the game invariably degenerates into a huge lagfest with cars and AI flying all over the screen in random directions. It would make sense to either optimise the net code if possible or reduce the max free ride/online player count.

samgt80:

You read my mind. Especially the bit about the late calls the GPS nav system makes. Real-life nav systems take into account the speed of the car while giving directions. And it would help if the route colours were a little clearer.

And as for the clothes coupons... I couldn't care less about them. I mean surely the sort of people this game would appeal to are not the sorts of people who like to play dressing up with dollies? I'm not an über-testosterone-filled-alpha-monkey-man or anything, I just like to race fast cars, but I couldn't give a flying fig what clothes my in-game character is wearing.

Additionally, I would like to be able to look around when using a steering wheel. There should be an option in which you can fully customise the controls, allowing you to map the camera to the D-Pad for example and discarding useless features like making the windows go up and down.

Maybe they could add something else for us to spend all of the spare clothing coupons on.

Did you know that when you have loads of clothes, you cant actually access all of them from one house. Each house can only accomodate a certain amount of clothing items.

It is really annoying if you want to make your character look good (as I did a few months ago, now I just dont care at all.).

Keep the classical music, just because you don't like it others might, there's nothing like Beethoven's fifth on a nice open road. If you think the radio stations are lacking then create your own playlist on the xbox.

I agree about keeping the classical music - that was great - but I agree with every point you've made. I especially think that the Hitchhikers and Models should give you $$$ instead of vouchers. That way if you want to buy clothes - great, use the $$$, but if you are saving for a car - then at least u can.

yea, giving $$$ to buy clothes will be good, for any champion as they have great money makers....
