View Full Version : Tantalus has ruined this game for me!!!

The title says it all...

I was SOO enjoying this game up until this mission, even the Maserati mission didn't present too much of a problem (I managed it in about 10 attempts).

I've now got myself in a situation where I need to finish Tantalus on Gold to unlock the rest of the single player missions and I just can't seem todo it. I've tried about 50 times with various cars and different driving styles and the closest I have got is 7:53 with penalties.

What's even more annoying is you don't even get a checkpoint along the way so you can check your progress compared to previous attempts.

I'm almost at the point where this game is going to get thrown out of the window unless I can get past this mission and a game shouldn't drive people (no pun intended) to that point.

Atari, Eden, PLEASE consider revising this mission. Increase the limit to 8:00 or remove\reduce the traffic or at the very least add one checkpoint at the bottom of the mountain.

It seems your lacking skill. ;)

There are a lot of People who have finished the game, so donīt blame others for your fault. tonguegre

Cīmon Tantalus is very easy.

You just have to take the right car.

See,

My first try was with a tuned Mc Laren and I failed. The second try was with a fully tuned Lamborghini Gallardo SE and I passed.

I even do this now just for fun. I pass in around 6:45 + some crashed -> 7:15 so still enough time.

So try the Gallardo SE (level 3 tuning) and you will make it :chapeau:

I've managed to complete ALL the other single player missions on Gold without too much trouble but this one seems stupidly difficult.

Search for Tantalus on this board and all you see are scores of posts about how difficult it is, so I'm not alone...

Jeah, youīre right, im sorry, wasnīt very constructive.

But what do you want to hear?

Problem: You were to slow
Solution: Drive faster and better

Donīt want to offend you but itīs as simple as that.

You just have to take the right car.I've tried the Enzo, GT40, McClaren Merc & the Lambo (all level three tuned) all with or without driving aids.

I've tried aggressive driving, too many penalties.

I've tried careful driving, too much time.

I've had good runs where I could have done it, but cars have randomly pulled out on me or swapped lanes right into my path.

It's VERY frustrating!

Tantalus is evil but it is possible even for a mere mortal to beat it. I don't remember which car I used, but it took a dozen tries and tearing my hair out before I managed. It's not just about skill, it's also about luck. So take it from me; I am of only average skill but still beat Tantalus by a hair.

I agree that Tantalus is a bit too unforgiving given the randomness of traffic.

Ahh the famous Tantalus ... it took me lots of goes and yes I got quite frustrated with it.

The advice I was given was to take it easy through the mountains and then floor it on the flat ... I used a stage 3 Lambo Murc with Driving Aid ... this is the thread with suggestions about cars etc

Good Luck and don't let one small event spoil the game for you ... it's not what TDU is about

I used a

Ruf Rt 12 Stage 3 tuned

After having the same problem as you

saying Tantalus is 'very easy' is total BS .. its hard and its meant to be.. its the key that opens up the rest of the game, so it has to be earnt by only people worthy of continuing

i found the best car to use was a Lambo Murci stage 3. excellent on the twisty bits and very fast on the straights.

since completing it in the Lambo though ive also had good success in any of the Nobles. theyre probably the best braking cars in the game, which is ideal for short sprints in the mountain sections, plus theyve got a decent acceleration and top speed...

but my main advice would defo be to drive careful.. if you make too many mistakes on the mountain bit dont even bother continuing.

another little tip that helps is when you get onto the short highway section the sat nav tries to direct up the wrong side of the road into oncoming traffic, ignore it and take the turning before so you follow the flow of traffic.

vasquez,

have you also tried the Lamborghini Gallardo SE?
it handles so well :chapeau:

It's not really that difficult. I think i used the normal F1 Stage 3

I used a level 3 tuned Enzo with driving aids on. There is an element of luck with the AI traffic though as it tends to vary in density from try to try. What you want is nothing coming in the opposite direction on the straighter bits of the mountain section so you can have a few bursts of flooring it. Don't be afraid to drive on the wrong side of the road on the left hand bends either - If you're right on the apex there should be enough room on the right hand side for any AI to pass by. Keep trying and good luck.

There is an element of luck with the traffic on it, sometimes you get a better run.

I have just finished it in a Gallardo SE stage 3 tuned after many attempts so stick with it and good luck. :)

I had a hard time with this with lots of diff cars. Then i got in the Enzo and did it and it was soooooo easy. Basically there is a road you go down (what the gps tells u) where it makes u drive in the wrong direction... All you gotta do is drive on the road paralell to it and then tantalus is a piece of piss :)

i did it on my third i think

in a stock caterham

1st time i took too many pemnalties in my zonda
2nd time i switched to caterham but took too many penalties
3rd time i took it easy, but still quick (didnt take unnessasary risks, only overtook when posotive there was no cars)

i did it with 3 seconds left inc. penalties

Oddball_E8
15-01-2007, 01:53
yup... i did it in a caterham too... but it wasnt easy... then again, with traffic on what is?

Jimster71
15-01-2007, 08:59
I did it in a stage 3 Ferarri F430. Definitely the most frustrating challenge, but it is possible to complete with practice.

It's the penalties that hurt you most, try not to hit anything and see what time you get. It's then a matter of trying to shave those few extra seconds off your time with better driving.

I got this on my first attempt in a stage 3 Enzo. Think my time was like 6:34 or something... A little tip... turn steering sensetivity up to full. It seems to make the cars handle better...

HINT - Use the catherham. stg 3 of course. but watch out for those back tires. its forever spinning out. but i did it on my 4 attempt.

I did with a Enzo stage 3.

I think that the game is so easy and needs more Tantalus to increase the level (tantalus is not easy, but not too difficult), all the races can be easily completed to a mid player. (platinum demand?)

VasquezUK I was in exactly the same situation as you; it took me around 30 (thirty) attempts to get the gold cup on it.

To some of the others who find it easy, please, use a bit of consideration, don't be so patronising. Not everyone is of the same level of skill. You can simply judge by the number of Tantalus threads that for many of us Tantalus IS substantially more difficult than most other races. I know I struggled to make it to the end in 7:30, PERIOD, nevermind without gaining any penalty points.

Anyway, VasquezUK, in the end I did it by ignoring the suggested route in the second half of the race that's marked by the arrow. The arrow route takes you along lots of short straights and slow 90 degree turns. Before initiating the race I looked at the route it takes in the second half of the race on the GPS and plotted my own route to the end taking advantage of some longer straights. It just takes a bit of memorisation to remember which turnoffs to take, and the arrow will then update to show you the route to the end anyway. By doing it this way I did Tantalus 3 out of 3 attempts.

Additionally due to all the hairpins and traffic obviously you don't get to build up speed of any note, so go with a car that's good on accel, braking and handling, not cars with the best speed. I used a level 3 Lamborghini Murci.

Good luck. :)

get the mclaren F1 GTR stage 3 (i think i used it) do it a couple of times really slow to get used to dodging traffic and get used to all the corners only overtake when no cars are coming the opposite way and dont undertake and steadily get faster and you hopefully will have done it

See, mid-engine cars are junk for me. You just don't want to admit that the Viper is good because it's IT's AMERICAN. American cars can turn, why else would they have a steering wheel. If you ask me, the Euro-trash is the ones that can't turn considering all the noobs race the 1.5 miles in downtown Wakki.

TBH i dont see the point in steering wheels in american cars because you would more than likely get less understeer with out them

i dont do any of those races so i dont know what your on about
