Sorry if this has been asked already or is somewhere else, but I couldn't find it (my search-fu on forums sucks), but will the various versions have a shared server so that Xbox 360 players can play with PC players, or will we have separate servers?

I ask because I plan to get the Xbox 360 version, whereas my friend doesn't have one, she'd have to get the PC version (and when I told her about the game, she's freaking out about it :atari: )

Sorry but at present it is not possible to mix xbox360 and PC games, there is talk about when Vista hits then it my be possible but not right now.

either your friend needs an xbox or you will have to run the PC version to play with each other

Hmm... someone forgot to tell Square ENIX that then. Final Fantasy XI Online all versions, PC, PS2, and Xbox 360, all access on the same servers (unless people I talked to in game claiming to be playing on the PS2 were lying, which I doubt). So, it IS possible, just is a matter whether Atari wishes to take the time to do an integration like Square ENIX did.

I think you'll find that on FFXIO, PS2 and PC players play together, but there is no way that MS allow PCs (or PS2's) to connect to the xbox-live system.. so 360 players are on their own server. :respect:

It's a load of bollocks if you ask me this non-cross platform gaming. I used to do it years ago. I had Amigas and STs hooked up together all the time for playing games against other people and when Falcon was getting played, we'd hook up a Mac in there too.

So, if we could do it fifteen years ago, why can't we do it now?

The answer is simple. It all comes down to money and licensing registraton and exclusivity contracts, etc. I'd like to be able to play against 360 owners on games when I finally get my PS3. Ha, that'd wind some people up. Imagine playing a game on a PS3 against playing the 360 people knowing they've had to pay for the online subscription (XB Live). Should be interesting to see if it actually happens anyway. I heard talk about it, but they were just unconfirmed rumors. So come on Micro$haft, sort it out for the gamers..

Can't really complain about the cost of Live really, £40 a year isn't that bad atall for what you get. Im all for cross plaform gaming but won't that put ther servers on more strain? If it just the crashs, im perfectly happy with what we have now.

Shadowrun will be the first game to allow cross-platform play between 360 and PC gamers. PC gamers will of course need Vista and the "Live Anywhere" service to play online. Bear in mind that this is published by Microsoft Game studios and you won't be seeing many/if any third party cross-platform titles this side of Christmas.

Add to that, TDU is a bit beyond the good old days of null-modem RS232 cables. (I used to hook two Atari STs up the same way to play Hard Drivin' II, by the way. That was totally hardcore.)

There's probably not just licensing but technical issues getting in the way too. Each platform using some proprietary technology (such as for voice chat), for instance, which gets in the way of peer-to-peer communication.

Supposedly, at some point there will be cross-platform online gaming between the Xbox 360 and Windows Vista PCs. They need to work with game developers and learn how to balance things to make that work effectively. Cross-platform gaming would limit what differences could be put into online-related modes in different SKUs.

On top of that, at this time I guess trying to have hundreds of thousands of PC gamers hook up to the same servers as TDU on the Xbox 360 would just be asking for trouble, and we've already seen too much of it as it stands. Don't forget all the work Atari has had to do to keep up with the influx of players and keep the servers available.

After all, the three most annoying TDU-related messages, in no particular order, are:

"The TDU servers are not available at this time. Please try again later."
"The server is too busy at the moment. Please try again later."
"You are going in the wrong direction. Please turn around."

Only one of those was made happen all the time on purpose. ;)

Maybe one day, we may be able to meet up in the PC and Xbox 360 versions of the game, or whatever they may create in order to top it.
