to lock onto them press left a few times till you have a list of all the gamertags on your server then press right on their name and right again on lock

could it be because my friend isnt connecter to a router' wireless router?

he is using the ethernet cable to connect to his laptop and the laptop is connected to a modem which is connected to a phone line?

could that be the problem? but the weird thing is he can hear me fine on all other games

Run the network connection test from the Xbox dashboard and ask your friend to do the same. Check the test item marked "NAT". It will be set to "strict", "moderate" or "open". If either one of you return a strict or moderate rating you may experience communication problems not limited to being able to hear each other's voice comms.

Have a look at this article for further information

mine is open, but he isnt on anymore because we couldnt talk to each other so i will ask him later

is there anyway you can change NAT?
also how can i hear him in games like gears of war and not in tdu?

These problems are not always related to NAT particularly if the network connectivity is poor between yourself and people in your gaming session (lag and packet loss).

Problems are often related to network protocol used by most Xbox live games: UDP. The UDP protocol is not particularly suited to transmission over an unreliable network link because it has no inherent error handling functions

If data is dropped then it will not be retransmitted by the sender. Exactly how errors are handled depends on the network code within the application. You may therefore experience different results with different games.

so is my NAT what it should be if it is set to open?

Yes "open" is the optimum setting. It means that your router should not be filtering any data.

its working with a different friend now i can hear him, and his NAT is open

does tdu crash for you guys sometimes when its loading?

If it's just TDU it sounds like you may have a scratched disc. It shouldn't crash when loading.
