View Full Version : Totally odd performance

Hi guys - I see that a fair few peeps are having performance issues and I've read all the posts I can see regarding this to see if they would help but no joy.
The issue is that no matter what detail settings I use or what resolution I use, I cannot get more than about 20 FPS. If I disable HDR I go up to about 40 but I am not willing (and should not need) to do that.
The other, minor, issue I have is that when playing the game I only get sound through my left speaker. Everything, including the intrio vids, plays fine though...
Now, the important stuff: My system:
AMD X2 4600+
2 GIG DDR RAM
400 GIG RAID 0 SATA II Array
2 x 7800GTX (256 Mb per card)
On board Realtek soundcard McThingie
Windoze XP PRO SP2
G25 steering wheel
So, not too shabby, eh? Its no GeForce 8 I grant yah, but it plays Oblivion at max setting, 1280x1024 at about 40 FPS outdoors so it does ok.
I have all the lastest drivers (A399 for the Soundcard, 93.81 for the Geforce's, 6.86 for the Nforce 4 MOBO)
I have tried EVERY setting there is. I have changed all details and resolution, I have created SLi profiles, renamed the .EXE to FEAR and 3DMARK06, disabled SLi, forced all types of SLi, unplugged the wheel, dissabled FF with the wheel turned on.... EVERYTHING!!! I'm starting to ***** up!
Please, does anyone have any suggestions as to what the heck is going on?
Oh and for what its worth, thsi is brand new install of XP. Nothing on it at all bar some games and the needed drivers. No extra software, codecs, peripherals or any other applications....

So, no one has anything? At all?
Come on! There are enough techies here: Someone must have something for me? The official tech support is the good old chocolate fire gaurd it always is, but I thought there'd be someone on here....

93.81 is not a good driver for TDU, go for the beta 101.02
http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=13463
that should give some better perfomance, you might need the modded inf file, save link as and replace the one in the driver file
i also swithed to ingame AA Off (when on 4X, 35 to 40 fps)
and set my AA and AF etc with Nhancer, AA 16X and AF16X and some tweaks on, i still have 50 FPS constantly
http://www.nhancer.com/
you will have to install .NET Framework 2.0 to let Nhancer work
test some different stuff with it, and the perfomance goes up, way better looking roads(no more silly grey stuff, but real looking tarmac
on a
AMD 4000+ @2.9G
2G OCZ gold edtions
7950GX2 @561/711
Logitech Formula Force GP wheel with FFB on/maxed out
res: 1280*1024

Thanks for the replies guys.
Razor, I gotta disagree. I have not seen anyone getting this kind of "fixed" FPS regardless of settings, but maybe you have.
MacBoom. Thanks, but while those drivers may improve TDU, they utterly suck with everything else so I don't want to try them again (may do, but unlikely). Also you are talking about running with AA enabled which means you have disabled HDR ( or your AA simply isnt doing anything) and this is something I wont consider either.
Ah well, my new rig will be being built in 3 weeks, maybe i'll just shelve TDU till then... <sigh>
If I disable HDR I go up to about 40 but I am not willing (and should not need) to do that.
......
2 x 7800GTX (256 Mb per card)
HDR totally killed my fps when I had a 7800GTX.....so this looks normal....with currernt version of game and drivers....

LOL! Duly noted! :)
EWOK666 - do you mean that HDR in this game killed your performance with these cards? If so then thats fair enough and just shoddy programming (not surprising given the team responsible). If you mean that HDR in any game killed your performance, then you were doing something wrong. As I said in the OP, I can run Oblivion flat out on this rig and that game is way more demanding that a mere racing game

Didn't try HDR in other games....just TDU. So yes, only HDR in TDU is/was an issue with a 7800GTX. Now have a overclocked 640MB 8800GTS and HDR makes virtually no difference in fps.

Fair play. In that case this game is just borked - no great surprise...
Back to the shops with it then. I'll get it on budget in a few weeks when I have my new rig.
Cheers for the input guys!

I know I shouldn't feed them, but seriously, STFU. If you are too dumb/cheap/young to go get a real GFX card then really, STFU.
The only point of playing games like this is to see the GFX and how they enhance the overall play. Turning off a major, game changing feature is just dumb. It would be like running it at 640x480 in black and white and arguing its better cos you get better FPS....

Got an 8800 now and can play HDR without too much impact. I don't like the way it looks anyway so it's off for now....

Are you talking about the 7800GTX? Not a bad card....even today. Not the top tier but still.
AS for the other comment: Believe it or not....some people actually value gameplay as well....not JUST graphics.
In either case: Yes, you can't expect 60+ fps in new games on card 1.5yrs old but that's no reason to be rude.

I'm sure hdr would make the game infinitely more enjoyable, if fact I think it would probably make me cream my pants.

And this was to be expected. Fella, I never said GFX were/are everything. Not once. I said they enhance the overall experience. If I wanted great gameplay and car simulation, I'd be playing GPL (well, actually, I still do), but I look to (supposed) next -gen titles to bring the goods with them in the rendering department.
I also never once said I expect 60+FPS. I don't expect that in ANY current gen/next gen titles.
I know my card is old. I said so. Repeatedly. BUT there are people with MUCH, MUCH worse cards getting a playable experience WITH HDR enabled. Therefore, there is a problem with how this game handles the 7800 or maybe how it handles 7800s in SLi.
And yes I was being rude, but if you do not see that it was simply in response to another user being a total *** for no reason, then you need to get your eyes checked.
I am not one to stomp onto forums, start laying down law and flaming people: far from it. I will not, however, accept the kind of **** that CheeseRider barfed up without comment.
Anyway, enough with this. I don't want a flame war or some idiotic tit-for-tat. The game simply does not like my hardware so as I said, fine, I'll wait till my next machine and buy it again.

Erm.. I'm a total noob when it comes to TDU, I dont even have the game. I only came to this forum to see if there was anything interesting going on... but I think I might have read somewhere that steering wheel's can annihilate framerate. Try disabling your wheel.
Just a suggestion...

i have a 7800 bfg GTX oc 512 i can't see why you want to switch on HDR it makes the graphics look like the xbox version it looks a lot better on mine with HDR off and AA on 2x or 4x
