Your upstream access speed is one of the main factors in having enough bandwidth but this doesn't guarantee you'll be lag free.
The main issue is how your ISP connects to the rest of the internet. If they have poor quality links to other providers (peering and transit) then you may experience lag which you cannot do anything about.
As a rule you should be ok with an upstream speed of 256kbps or more. Beware though if your service provider does traffic shaping at certain times of the day to limit your access speeds.
There are other things you can do to minimise lag, for example: don't play in a session with 7 other people from a different continent.

10Mb/512Kb which is shortly to be upgraded to 20Mb/768
I'm in the office at the moment so my internet access is running over a 2.5Gb/sec fibre channel ;)

I'm on Virgin Media (formerly NTL). No date given for my speed upgrade yet. Won't make much difference tbh.

Yeh same here, Won't make much diff on XBL but downloads it will and they are limiting speeds after the upgrade who ever downloads over 3Gb between 4 and 12 will be cut to 5mb Lol They say its only 5% of the customers d/l that..... Yeh right. Im in Edinburgh, was supposed to be this month obvi not tho.

Wow, I just checked that out Crappuccino and my hometown is on the list of 20mb! I believe Virgin is unlimited bandwidth too? I read it on there that it is, but I'd just like you to confirm it if you could! What's your opinion on Virgin? I'm paying £27 for 2mb on BT but would happily go for the 10-20mb option for an extra tenner once my contract runs out!
Manchester area including: Oldham, Bolton, Burnley, Rochdale, Blackburn, Salford, Stockport
Woot! Thanks for pointing this out to me! :respect:

It's not that much extra than what you're currently paying to get 4Mb with them. Also, once they've completed the 10->20 upgrade, if they follow NTL's old behaviour, they'll do a free 4->10 and 1->4 upgrade, too.

I would tentatively give the nod to VM over any of the adsl offerings I've seen to date. The only problem is that some of the external transit is often poor and laggy: namely connectivity to the US. Bear in mind that VM's network infrastructure is very complex and performance does vary from region to region.
Another thing to watch, as mentioned by boltvolt, is the new traffic management system VM have introduced. If you're on the top tier and download 3GB+ of data over a specified period of time between 4pm and 12PM your access speed will be halved for a couple of hours. Having said that there are no limits on how much you can download and on the whole these measures a lot less restrictive than most of the dsl provider offerings atm.
