ok who started this?
its getting a little annoying when every half hour someone is going round telling you what to write as your motto.
everyone has an email account right?
everyone has seen these "if you do not repost you..." chain mails right?
is everyone forgetting what company we are dealing with here?
i'm sorry but it seems to me its a little daft - is it just me? :hin:

Rumours are saying if 5000 put "Xbox Live Free" as the motto, XBL will become free, this is pathetic lol, Xbox Live is getting a new user ever 8 seconds (Silver included in this I think). It's silly, people are paying for Xbox Live, around 7 million, infact, why would MS make it free all of a sudden?

live should not be free, come on its £3-4 a month, and the price means that eejits are generally not going to pay and so stay off, meaning a better game for all the rest of us

I'm not going to agree or disagree, but many critics have a point when they say it should at least be lowered.

I got one off someone I've never met or heard of, that makes two. As I just upgraded to live again this morning I think I'm pretty against free xbox live for the next 365 days or so. Why would microsoft a). change things or b). listen to the consumers?

now there are people going round saying "dont change your motto to online should be free cos you'll get banned" lol
problem is for every person that ignores it theres likely to be at least 3 that believe it.
its gonna be everywhere on all games for a while i guess yet.
wonder what the next chain mail will be...
it's all a load of rubbish, started by some 6 year old who wants to achieve huge Kudos with his friends for making the world change to his motto!
Microsoft would not be Microsoft of they gave us all something for nothing. The one thing you can be absolutely sure of when it comes to Microsoft is that they will charge you to the Max for any service they provide. Anyone rang their support line lately and looked at the phone bill afterwards?
Are you willing to risk being subject to the whims and decisions of someone providing free servers? People who are in control of something that they pay for, not that we pay for?
Like whoever is paying for the Diner servers?
I would rather rent a server for a small monthly or yearly amount, as then that puts the providers of the server under some degree of our financial control.
Free Xbox live is a stupid idea.

This is just PC gamers, who are used to free multiplayer in most of their games.
Except, think about it. With games like Battlefield, EA provided a few servers, but the rest were either from big websites/providers, or from private citizens. Those private citizens paying all the bandwidth and host costs out of their own pocket.
I don't agree with this idea of a free ride, and happily pay £40 a year for access to play as many multiplayer games as I like for as long as I like (I've played games in the past where I was paying by the minute or hour!). In my mind, paying the money ensures the servers will be running for longer (as opposed to when the game stops being possible/the publisher has had enough) and also means they won't just make games that use a multiplayer element cost more to cover the shortfall.

firecatman has a good point - my freeride is still caput and its the only game displaying any kind of problem so my belief that its virgin medias fault is a little shakey.
why am i paying for something that doesnt work again?

Well, as far as I can see, the major problem that people see is this. Xbox Live is the only o0nline gaming structure which people have to pay for (Not including pay-to-play games like WoW, Phantasy Star Universe, etc.).
I've recently bought a PS3 (And yes, it's actually a rather impressive bit of kit before all you damn xbox fanboys start) and it has a completely free online system for gaming. We're talking about 40 player servers with no lag. My buddy has a Wii (fun for parties and make no mistake) and he can play games online for free. People with the PSP and DS can also play online for free. PC gamers have enjoyed this privilege for many years.
What the Xbox community is upset about is that for their money, the online service should be noticeably better and with no lag. Which is funny, because XBL is the only online service in which I experience lag. Tell me you've played TDU online with no lag for a whole day and not seen any other cars suffer lag in a small 8 player server.
I have a 16Mb line and for the most part, lag is something that happens to other people, but I still suffer the consequences. Peoples cars bouncing all over the track meaning that I can't drive too close is just one example.
I know quite a few people who have bought other consoles and enjoy free online gaming and have subsequently stopped playing on XBL because of this. I know that it's only £40 a year, but for paying to play my games, I do expect a superior service. Micro$haft have yet to deliver this in my opinion. Yes it's an exceptional system, but for the money, it needs to see improvement. I'll keep my XBL because there are some great titles and great people that I play with. But come on M$, please make this money I pay actually mean something.
Anyway, that's my thoughts.. Any comments on this?
Peace

Peer to Peer gaming networks will always be more susceptible to lag than traditional client/server games such as counterstrike, unreal tournament etc which are run on dedicated servers run by ISPs, publishers or commercial community concerns because you are dealing with direct connections between many different users.
No matter how good people think their domestic internet connections are, the average cable/adsl connection does not enjoy the same levels of service as a business class connection (eg. have you seen how much a 2Mbit framestream access circuit costs per month?). When things start getting busy, contention becomes an issue and connections may start slowing down and suffering latency, not to mention other factors such as people who are traffic shaped.
Ultimately you could argue that Xbox live isn't much more than a glorified matchmaking and content delivery service but it's still underpinned by a huge investment in infrastructure and ongoing running costs. If Microsoft made Live free as a PR exercise it would come back and bite them when the financial results come in. The last thing they want to do is commit commercial suicide which is what Sony seem to be doing!
