It seems many are having this particular problem. I don't have any emulation programs. I used to have magic ISO and daemon tools but I got rid of those a while back. Yet the game still won't run.

I should have at least the minimum requirements so I don't see what the problem could be.

Do you have any registry entries left over from your emulation tools?

i really wouldn't know, I have a registry cleaner that runs every 3 days so i'd assume not

These are the registry instructions for securom - this game isn't securom protected, but they might still work:

-Please open the registry editor (Start->Run->regedit) and move to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices\ area (by clicking on this folder, you will see all the entries on the right side). Look at the entries with an alpha designation (ie: \DosDevices\Letter_Here). You should see one of entries with letters with duplicate entries. If you delete the duplicate entry (right mouse click and choose 'Delete' from the choices), you should be able to exit RegEdit and launch your program.

-If the problem persists, please delete all REG_BINARY entries in this folder (only blue ones on the right side). Reboot your computer immediately, the entries will be re-established, and the game should start.

Just out of interest...have any of you got a SATA DVD Drive?
I have a theory that is lacking data...and I need to know if the majority of people that have this problem are running SATA drives instead of IDE...

I got a new dual layer SATA DVD drive and cannot play the game.
Is there anything that can be done or do i just return the game?!

Try rebooting with the disk in the drive.

It's a bit of an odd solution, but was suggested by the Tages team, it seems some DVD drives are being treated as hot swappable by Windows (ie you can unplug them without turning the computer off) - this might be one of the causes of problems.

unfortunately rebooting with cd in the drive did not help my problem.
is there any news on a possible solution for the problem? getting bit pissed with with the problem here. As i searched for solutions with google i noticed that if I had pirated the game i would already be playing the game, makes me very sad!

Actually you wouldn't - the pirated version isn't completable. Sneaky :p

I can only suggest popping along to the witcher developers forums (www.thewitcher.com) as they've got a pinned thread about this issue (and to collect information about it I guess).

Just offering this tidbit for anyone who is still having problems with the "Original DVD" message. For the life of me I cannot remember how or where I came across this solution, but it works for me (Win XP Pro, no idea if it will work in Vista), after days and days of frustration over trying to get the game to start.

Simply go into your Windows\system32\drivers folder, and delete "atapi.sys" (make a backup, just in case). Windows will immediately replace the file with a new, error-free version, and The Witcher will run. You will have to do this each time you want to play, but it works, and reads from the DVD as it should.

In some cases if you insert your original dvd in a dvd-recorder you get this error.
Solution: Insert your original dvd to a dvd-rom-drive without recording function.

(I haven't tried this for "our" case, but I allready had this problem in past in DeusEx2 and I solved it this way)

something else:

I had no problems with the 1.1 version of the game, but after installing the 1.2 patch the game crashes occasionally. :mefiant: :hin:

I was getting the same error after installing the game, and after reading a few different things what worked for me simply was goind to tagesprotection.com and downloading and installing their driver. That was it, the game opened right up after that.

If anyone is curious, I'm running it on the Windows 7 beta, 64 bit version.
