I downloaded the demo, but it won't play.
It goes to the gray screen, then this comes up:

My game won't even load eekblue:

I click on the icon that has been placed on my desktop and get the message
'Another program is currently using this file'

I've emailed Atari but does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

It sounds like the program is already running somewhere. Easy solution is to reboot your computer and try again. Otherwise if you're more technically minded you can bring up task manager (alt-ctrl-del) and look for the process that might have a name related to the demo and close it.

I've already tried that...several times

I'm going to try on my laptop and then on my friends computer some time next week.

For those that can't get it working, can you post some information about what computers you're trying to run the demo on?

Simplest way of doing that is by creating a dxdiag report. Go to Start->Run and type in 'dxdiag'. Then 'Save All Information', and attach the text file to a post here (the 'Manage Attachments' button below what you're typing).

Thanks :)

Thanks - your problem *might* be one of two things:

1) You have very little ram
2) You only have an onboard intel graphics chip, instead of a dedicated mobile chip from ATi or nVidia.

I've still not managed to get hold of the system requirements yet (is there a readme as part of the demo?) when we get them we can see if these are the reasons.

You can also try the latest driver for your graphics chip, which can be found here:

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=N&ProductID=922&DwnldID=10099&strOSs=45&OSFullName=Windows*%20XP%20Home%20Edition&lang=eng

LOL well done on figuring out the attachments!

As above, I've not got the system requirements yet so can't give a definitive answer - on first glance I think your hardware should be fine. However one thing you can try is to update the drivers for your graphics card. Currently yours are over three years old! Sometimes new games take advantage of of a newer graphic technique that requires an update in the software driver.

You can find the most recent driver for your card at this website:
http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

You need to pick GeForce FX as your product series and then download and run the driver file.

Let us know if that helps!

Wow.. your graphics card is really really old. I fear it won't be enough to run the game, but usual disclaimer of still not having the system requirements applies.

Can anyone with the demo see if there was a readme file that came with it anywhere?

I have a problem like this: I have installed the demo and when I'm trying to start it, comes a message what says: "Could not find or load Game.DLL in System\ or current directory!. If the file is there it may be an incorrect version or may have thrown an internal error during initializaon, the .log file in System may have more information" I have downloaded the demo from MHAM:s homepage, so I don't think it's incorrect.. If somebody knows how to solve this problem, please reply, because I have waited for this demo so long.

Hi Kalniel,

Does this also mean that it won't work if/when I buy the full version ?

Being computer illiterate what can I do to solve this problem , my 9 yr old daughter just wants it to work and doesn't understand why it won't.

What type of Graphics Card is suitable just so she can play the Demo version ?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Darren,

I'm still trying to get hold of the system requirements - when I'm sure of them I'd be happy to help advise what changes you'd need to make to your system to get it running this game. Also it's not too long until the game's release and it might be worth waiting for that before making a final decision as sometimes the requirements change in final testing.

kalniel
15-11-2007, 15:22
Hi again Darren,

The system requirements can now be found in the sticky at the top of this thread. It shows that indeed your graphics card is not compatible with this game. It is recommended you get at least a geforce 6 series or ATI 9800 or better.

If you're on a very tight budget I recommend the 6600GT, but ideally you should try for a 7600GT AGP or better - they are still very cheap compared to more recent graphics cards.

You are also right on the bare minimum of RAM - if you could get another 512mb to get you up to 1gb in total you'll find the whole computer performs better.

Hope that helps,

kalniel

OK the system requirements have come out, and I'm afraid the laptop doesn't meet either the RAM or the graphics card requirement. You could try the latest drivers that I linked to, but it's unlikely to work - if it did it would probably be too slow to enjoy the game. I looks like this laptop is just too old for this game, sorry :(

But hopefully the main computer is ok :)

Do you know the model name of your computer? We might be able to look up what upgrades are possible, assuming it's not a laptop!

From the dxdiag information it doesn't look like you have a dedicated slot to put a better graphics card in :( You can buy a card that goes in a normal slot (eg. like a sound card or network card), like the nVidia Geforce 6200, but they are very slow. Of course it could just be that the dxdiag information isn't telling us everything, so that's where knowing the model number/name might help.

If you have already ordered the game over the internet you can return it unopened within 7 days from the date you received it and you're guaranteed a full refund under UK law (distance selling regulations) :)

I'm not sure your computer has an AGP slot. If you know it does, then you can get a better card than that - I'd go for a 6600GT if you can.

If you don't have an AGP slot (or PCI-E), then you are restricted to PCI cards only (not to be confused with PCI Express  ). These are slow because the PCI connection is itself very slow.

Hi Kalniel.

kalniel

The demo is quite a large file - if you have an internet connection that sometimes drops it might cause a problem - alternatively the server at Atari's end might be very busy. Keep trying - especially try in the mornings when internet traffic is quieter in general.

Also you might want to try some kind of download manager, which can resume the download from where it left off. I use one called flashget, but there are many different ones out there.

It's possible. Can you attach a dxdiag to a post so we can check your system specifications/driver versions (go start->run and type in 'dxdiag', then save all information to desktop and attach the txt file to a post here using the manage attachments button underneath the text box).

Your computer thinks it doesn't have any graphics device at all! It might be fine once we know what drivers you need to install, but because your computer doesn't know what it has installed I can't tell from the dxdiag report which ones to try.

Do you have any receipts or documentation that might show what graphics card you have in your computer? If not don't worry - we can try different drivers in turn - they should just fail to install if you don't have the right card for them!

Your computer is pretty good and certainly has the hardware to run MHAM.

I'm not an expert on vista, but one thing that might be causing the problem is that sometimes Vista only comes with the Vista only version of directX (10) - MHAM actually uses the more universal DirectX 9. You can download DirectX 9 here (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=1A2393C0-1B2F-428E-BD79-02DF977D17B8&displaylang=en)

We'll give it a go :)

OK, there are a couple of possible problems, in order of most-likely first:

1) Your graphics card drivers are a bit old. Go here:
http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html
and download/install the latest ones.

2) Some of your directX files are very old - this one is confusing - you have a fairly recent version of directX 9, but it's like the files it's built ontop of are too old. Have you fully updated your computer from the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com)?

3) You have a 9250 card.. According to the minimum requirements this should be fine, but we've heard a couple of reports about that generation of cards having problems with the game - we're not sure why yet.

Try no.1 first as hopefully that's all you need. If not, go to the windows update site and as well as any required updates, look for optional software updates too - select any that are to do with .NET Framework 2.0, and to do with your graphics card (if any come up).

Let us know how you get on- if it doesn't work please attach another dxdiag report of your latest setup (call it a different name so that it can upload ok).

Siddonna

Thanks!
I`ll do that:)

Oh, and I haven˙t fully updated the windows yet...

I really want to thank you for your effort!:)

kalniel
12-12-2007, 18:39
Thanks - yes, correct file :)

From that it looks like the directX has updated itself to be even more recent, but your video card drivers haven't installed - they're still dated 2006.

When you went to the ATI driver page and selected your card, what version of catalyst did it tell you to download? (was probably something like 6.10) Were there any problems installing the radeon (ATI) drivers?

edit: oh.. just had a look at the drivers and indeed ATI didn't produce much newer ones :( If I get time later I'll see if I can find any unofficial drivers that are more recent for your card.

Siddonna
12-12-2007, 18:44
Yes, it was 6.11 and no, there were no problems.

You`re great!

kalniel
12-12-2007, 19:04
Not if I can't get it working for you :(

You're not alone - some people from other countries are having problems with similar cards, the minimum specifications *say* they should work - we even had confirmation from Atari that they had tested it with minimum spec computers. I'm trying to find out more details about the testing process because it's now clear no new drivers (even unofficial ones) have really been made for your card since 2006. If I can find out how what they used to test this then I might be able to suggest a specific driver.

Otherwise the best thing might be to look for a cheap newer card on ebay or something, if you do I can help suggest ones that really should work with this game - it depends how quickly you want to be able to play really!

Well if you did want to look for graphics cards (and know how to change them/know someone who can change them for you), you obviously need to make sure it's an AGP card.

Ones that should work well with this game are ATI Radeon 9800, X700, X800, X1600, X1650, x1950

or NVIDIA Geforce 6600 (GT preferably), 6800 (LE/GS/GT), 7300 GT, 7600 (GS/GT), 7800, 7900

No problem at all :) Hopefully there will be a receipt or document somewhere that breaks down the components included in the computer. It should say something about the CPU, RAM, graphics card and operating system. This is usually on the main reciept but it varies from vendor to vendor. If someone built the computer for you then there may be a reciept just for the graphics card alone - look for anything that says ATI/NVIDIA/Radeon/Geforce or perhaps AGP or PCI-Express.

I bought it from Currys *ick*

They are useless, I sent it back when I first got it because it wouldn't play The Sims (v1) and they just turned it on and gave it back to us....and charged me £300 for the privilege!! (It would have been easier to buy a new computer :P)

I would put money on it being NVIDIA because that is mentioned somewhere in the booklet - I'll look now and post an update later.

EDIT: I fixed it! mdr1 I installed some software from a disk that was in the attic and the graphics card has been recognised...but now I need to see if the game will work

Cool! Can you produce another dxdiag report? That way I'll be able to see what card it is and see if the drivers from the CD are recent enough.

OMG! It finished downloading.. but then I double-clicked to play, and then an error box pops up! It said:

Could not find or load Game.DLL in System\ or current directory!.
If the file is there it may be an incorrect version or may have thrown an internal error during initialization, the .log file in System may have more information

What's going wrong? Will the same happen to me when I get the real game?

I've got the same problem.. Can somebody help me? I really want to get this demo to work. I also put my dxdiag here. (I hope it's not wrong...) :/

You did the right thing.. but sadly it shows your computer is just too old to play this game. Your CPU, RAM *and* graphics card are all too old to be able to run it, sorry :( New computer time I'm afraid.

Okay. My computer is quite old, but my big sister's computer is a LOT newer than mine. But it has got the same problem.. Maybe you (Kalniel) could check why the game doesn't work on it. I'll send dxdiag tomorrow, because it is already so late.. So, tomorrow I'll send dxdiag, and hope that you can find what's wrong with it. Luckily my dad has got very new computer, so if the demo doesn't work on my sister's computer, I'll can try it with my father's..

Hehe well it runs, which is the main thing. It's also quite encouraging that it can work on that card - it's good to find a real world 'minimum card' that we know the game works on, thanks :)

Ok this computer is better, but the graphics card is in a sort of grey area - it's an NVIDIA FX series card (5 series), it's recommended to go for 6 series or better. We're actively trying to find out from Atari how it might be possible to get the game to run on your card, but even if we do manage it, it will struggle.

The rest of your computer is absolutely fine, so if you upgraded to a 6 series card or better you'd have no problem. :)

*nods* Your graphics card falls into the group of ones I don't think work with the game, despite the back of the box suggesting them might :(

I'm afraid you don't even meet the requirements as listed on the back of the box - you only have a geforce 2 mx graphics card.

does this mean that the game won't work when I actually have it. not the demo i mean.,....
Cause i just spent alot of money on that ... ahhh :(

What are my options ?

Mine? I don't have anything to do with it :p If you get a 6 series card or better it should work.

The problem is not your's, it's the person that works with the minimum requirements stuff. of course it works with an 6 series card, but i don't have the money and i bought the game thinking that should work on mine Graphic Card. big disappointing.

Is there any news of a patch release?

I'm sorry back there, i was annoyed.

I've not heard any news about a patch, but I'll let you know as soon as I hear anything about it.

Hi, I'm getting a new laptop and this is the graphics card that I'm getting with it: 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT it isn't on the list you gave, should this card be able to run the game?

kalniel
23-01-2008, 09:55
Yes it should have no problems - it's newer than the cards I listed (I deliberately listed older ones so that people upgrading their machine didn't have to pay as much!)

Yay! Now I just have to be patient until my new laptop gets here, because my current laptop only has an integrated card and won't run the game.

Same sort of grey area with the graphics card - it looks like no-one with your type of card is managing to play the game. It seems to be that you need a geforce 6 series or ATI X800 or better to play the game :(

Same again - you have a geforce FX (5 series) - it seems like you need at least a 6 series card (6600 etc.) to play the game.

i have just bought the game and it installed sucessfully and plays with no problems .
