I have a Sony DVD/R DRU-710a with the most recent firmware. The Witcher DVD does not like this drive. During installation it would make it about 2/3 of the way through then crash with a Cyclic Redundancy Check error. Other times the install wouldn't start because of a C++ error. I tried the disc in another computer (with an older Sony DVD/R drive) and it wouldn't read it at all.

I then put the disc into my MacBook Pro, which read it perfectly. Then, I plugged in an external HD and copied the contents of the DVD to it. I plugged the external HD back into my PC and installed from there, and it worked. Other discs work fine in the drives the Witcher disc was having problems in. Could this possibly be a flaw in the copy protection software that is making the disc incompatible with some drives?

Or a flaw in your drive that makes it unable to read the DVD?

It's not Sony per se though - I play The Witcher on a Sony DVD +- RW drive without problem.

It could also be background programs that are present on your PC but not your mac.

One drive reads it, but very slowly and gave errors, the other didn't read it at all, but the Mac did fine. Other DVD discs have no problems in either of the drives that were having issues with this disc. I'm really doubting it's a background program. I keep my gaming PC pretty clean.

edit: also I'm not saying it's all sony drives, i'm saying i think it might be certain drive models. i have two with reading problems which are completely fine with other discs, so i find it really unlikely it's a flaw in the drive. Which model do you have?
