Hello,
I just bought Witcher and I've encountered an unusual problem with the disc. When installing I've noticed a reading speed drop, followed by a 3-5 sec pause...then speed comes back to normal. I've done a check with Nero CD/DVD Speed and noticed the speed drop, followed by the pause, is encountered when passing from 1st to 2nd layer of the disc. I have other games that came on Dual Layer disc, but none of them has this problem...Since the disc is readable, I don't know who to blame...The disc or my ASUS 1608P2 DVD-RW. The shop won't change it unless I prove it's defective...

Whether a speed drop over the layer change is noticeable or not generally depends on the data layout on the disc - some games duplicate data on the second layer so there's not a continuous seek across the change. A larger buffer on your DVD drive/faster mechanism will also mask this change better.

It doesn't really mean much, as you've found, there's just a minor speed drop as it refocuses/seeks on the second layer, and it shouldn't affect your enjoyment of the game.

What mode is your DVD drive in (PIO/DMA1-4)?

Hello,
after further investigation I've noticed the Witcher DVD is detected by my DVD-RW as DVD-ROM instead of DL. I have an ASUS 1608P2 DVD-RW. According to official specs max speed for DL is 8X, and for DVD-ROM 16X. The DVD-RW is adjusting reading speed automatically. And I'm guessing the higher the speed, the more noticeable the reading speed drop at the layer change point. A friend confirmed his Witcher disc makes a slight pause, with a reading speed drop from 8X to 6X at the layer change point. And his DVD-RW detects it as DL. Unfortunately my optical unit doesn't allow me to set the reading speed...My bios is up-to-date. I found out the disc is fully functional and this was the purpose of this thread. Thanks again for the support.
