Can you elaborate on the control scheme? How does it differ between PS360, PC and Wii? Will you be using the PS3 tilt controls for anything?
You said the game would use the driving physics from Test Drive Unlimited but TDU was expressly criticised for its handling model. Will you be making any changes to it?
How do NPCs fit into the game? Do they act as AI teammates or hand out "side-quests" or what exactly?
Does the initial release have an entirely self-contained storyline or will it end on a cliffhanger and be continued in future downloadable episodes?
Could we get more info on the demo? Month of release, platforms, etc.
Any chance of a weapons list (as in actual guns. discounting all the environmental objects you can pick up and use)?
What will the DS and PSP versions be like?
Will there be an SDK release or mod support in the future?
Do you use a save checkpoint system or save at an ingame object like a typewriter or what exactly?
Thanks.
Jackpot, the DS and PSP versions have been cancelled. Alone in the Dark is confirmed on Xbox360, PS3, PS2, PC and Wii :)
What will happen when we finish the game, will we unlock other game modes (such as Resident Evil Series) or just be able to play it with another character (such as AITD4)?
Hello, I'm wondering if you can tell me more about the music of the game. The Bulgarian traditional music is really deep and for me it perfectly fits the atmosphere of the game. So I like to know how did you got the idea to include Bulgarian traditional music and also what are the people behind the soundtrack?
Thanks
^ that one i can answer: the music is from Olivier Deriviere (http://www.olivierderiviere.com/od/flash/), and tenebra said that: "It looks like the soundtrack cd will be released in the X360 limited edition" (in this thread: http://forums.eu.atari.com/showthread.php?t=77492)

Ok but i warn you I want:
1.all previous alone in the dark with full manual
2.artbook with hard cover containing drafts and high quality picures in glossy paper at least 200 pages
3.a deck of tarrot cards
4.a tshirt
5. the soundtracks of all 3 first games
6.2 bonus dvd
7. a small artifact of the game( let it be a dagger I dont mind)
8. The sequel to Titanic(the official one-starring dead Jack) and
8. the One Ring from the Lord of the Rings
I know I know these are only the beginning. I am sure Atari will make a better package than that of The Witcher and wont dissapoint us!!!
P.S. I will go berserk if you only contain the One Ring and not the other stuff. Consider the One Ring optional!!!!
P.S2.The sequel to Titanic is obligatory.
Thank You!!! :salut2: :salut2: :salut2:

I'll send you a t-shirt just because of your lunacy tonguegre
Could you please send your full name and postal address to uk.support@atari.com marking it FAO Tenebra, it'll be forwarded to me.
So #4 will be covered and you won't be able to complain tonguegre
PS I thought The Witcher pack was pretty good, the artbook was quality (and the half a ton keyring impressive)

(and the half a ton keyring impressive)
Sorry didn't understand the above.Whats that?
I was dissapointed by the fact that at first they announced more things such as the medallion and then they butchered the package. What frustrated me even more was that the price was not butchered at all if you get my meaning.
P.S.Only a Tshirt? What about some production notes???Or even the scenario of the game????
I want the writer himslef in a box sent to me first class with the game in his mouth! Now that would be collectible!!!!!!
Edit: Does that offer with the Tshirt really stands??? tonguegre
I thought the medallion was included in the pack - that's the keyring! It's heavy enough to be checked in as luggage if you happen to travel by plane eekblue:
I'll still send you the t-shirt, but can't really send you neither the writer - a bit too pricey - nor any of the developers (sorry, we like them too much. A developer is for life, not just for release dates tonguegre )

Ok the email will be sent I hope you'll be true to your word and send me your girlfriend...eh the writer... eh no the company's stocks.. eh ok the tshirt which is really appreciated and more valueable because I consider it a gift!!!
(What a man must do to get a tshirt nowadays!!! :) )

Any more questions? I will be submitting the first 10 questions later this afternoon :)

How open is the world in terms of free-roaming? Can we explore most of Central Park from the get-go or do sections get unlocked in a linear fashion? One preview (http://uk.gamespot.com/xbox360/action/aloneinthedark/news.html?sid=6184994&tag=newlyadded;title;1 ) makes it sound like there are levels you have to progress through in a linear manner.

How has the increased realism of the game mechanics affected the gameplay design?
How do you balance puzzles that that can be solved by many different approaches?
Does this lead to extremely complex puzzles that may make the game impossible for less inventive players?

Why does Carnby not use his signature .038 special?
As we all know the last we saw of Carnby, he saved Emily Hartwood from Jed Stone. Will we see Emily Hartwood in the game? If not, will we discover what happened with her?
Hi Dirty_Riley, sorry, your question arrived after I had already submitted the questions to the producer but...the QA will now run every two weeks instead of every month. So watch out for next session, your question might be answered ;)

If possible can you share with all of us if there will be more playable characters?
And will the story break up into different segments like in the dreamcast game where you could see the story from different angles with the characters?
Also I recently read that the Wii version will have these really special menus that make you look into your coat for items and the health is how badly wounded you are. I was wondering if this means that the same will happen on the other versions too?
Also will there be a full soundtrack for the game that people can buy from the atari shop or any shop? I really like atmospheric music and in the Alon in the Dark series it really makes the game tha bit more scary!
I am a bit curious about the collector's edition for the xbox 360 too as the person that mentioned the Pc version. But I guess we have to wait a long time and it would be great to have even if only one of those extra he mentioned like a artbook, music sample, black coloured tshirt with logo shining through. :)
Sorry, guys, answers to the first Q&A session won't be published today owing to Eden's work commitments but please watch this space next Monday ;)
I am thrilled to see, that people actually answer the questions, maybe its because its a small community, but still its a good thing. I am also thrilled when I heard about this new AITD being developed, its been in production for a while now so I cant wait till its done. I am a huge fun of the series, I bought the trilogy box when I was 11 years old and the new nightmare when I was fourteen (I am almost twenty now). I was also excited when I heard that there was a movie being made, WAS excited I may underscore cause when I saw the preview I know something horrible was produced, this was not only an insult towards Alone in the dark, but an insult for movies in general. Who ever gave Uwe Boll the rights to use the name Alone in the dark, should be ashamed. It had absolutely nothing to do with one of the games, apart for the names Carnby and Aline Cedrac. I hope this new game will make me forgot about this abomination of a movie. I heard that the producers havent even seen Boll his movie so thats a big plus :)
Now for my questions:
Will there be any references to the old parts? If its the same Carnby as the original, does that mean there are references at AITD2 and 3 as well? (Like I dont know some offspring of Jed Stone or maybe a return of one eyed jack) or is it just referring to the first part only?
In Alone in the dark 4: the new nightmare, a different Carnby was introduced, apparently having no connection or whatsoever with the original Carnby in the trilogy, whats the reason the 'old' Carnby was chosen and not this one? Would have made more sense, as with the timeline and everything. Also on the box art that Carnby looks more like the one of The New Nightmare. My question is: is the Carnby of part 4 being entirely left out and should we assume Alone in the Dark 4 never took place?
I heard some stories that the original trilogy is being released but that it can work now on your modern system with working sound and music (my god that such a miracle, I have the original AITD on 3 computer systems, there was always some problem with sound or music not being played) is this true?
My last question: is the narrator on the trailer of Central Park the same guy who spoke as edenshaw in part 4?

Will there be any online features to thje game ? DLC, Leaderboards... Co-op  ?

Keep the questions coming, I'll select the next 10 for submission this coming Friday (8th Feb) :)
Oh, oh, new question.
Will we get a dog like the one from I am legend ?

Will they release a soundtrack?
Dirty_Riley
07-02-2008, 19:44
will there be references to the previous Alone in the Dark games. Such as a golden eagal for Alone in the Dark 3. Or a maybe in one of those mutated tress, you could possibly see a man carved into the tree, like the boss in Alone in the Dark 1.
Hi guys,
I've picked this session's questions, thank you very much for your contribution :)
We've had a lot of interesting questions this week, please don't assume that if they weren't selected this time I won't go back to them for session #3.
I apologise for deliberately keeping out questions about collector's edition, soundtrack release and similar topics as they are beyond Producer's control and much more publisher related. The UK Product Manager lives (indeed!) by my right hand desk and you can rest assured I'll pass you info as soon as plans are set in stone :)
Answers next week, either Friday or Monday :)

I love my limited editions ^__^ especially when the art books are actualy art books, and not just a bunch of in game pictures put in a small little book made of cheap paper :P
Keep the questions coming! Don't forget that the deadline for submission for session #3 is this Friday 22nd Feb :)
Thanks Nour Polloni for answering my questions, I have one more question: I like the fact that this new Alone in The Dark is revering to the very first (which had the best story and was the most creepy of the trilogy), in the first part the game was based on the work of HP Lovecraft, one of the best horror writers in the 20st century, do we see anything of the Chtulhu mythos in the new part?
Thanks,

There were early previews that hinted we get to explore the central park zoo. Is this still the case as I haven't heard mention of it in any recent articles or interviews and if we do, can we even explore inside of the buildings that are within it such as the tropical dome and others? Will any animals there try to do harm to Carnby or are you sticking with the strictly paranormal approach?
Nour will be very busy for the next couple of weeks, so we'll take a little break from the Q&A sessions.
Keep your questions coming, though, I'll select the next 10 on Friday 7th March :)

The origional Alone in the Dark game was inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft. Has any of his influence been used in this game? If not, was it ever considered?
EDIT: Sorry I just relised a similar question is asked above.

Will AITD be optimized for more than 2 PC processing cores?
I know that the XBOX and PS3 will be, but will the PC version be?
This would be great for us gamers with with quad cores.
Will AITD use Direct X 10? Please say its so :bravo:
Will there be any difference between the PC,Xbox & PS3 versions?
Sorry for all of the techy questions, But the Storyline and Gameplay look so awesome that I can't think of any questions for that.
Keep up the good work :atari:

If the game isnt optimized for more than 2 Cores then this game is obsolete even before release...
What I mean is :
IF the game only supports max 2 cores then the people with Octo Core wont be playing this game IF their Octo Core runs 1 core at 1Ghtz...
I have Dual Xeon Quad Core and play all games really fast accept older games that dont support more than 1 core with makes the game only run around 2 Ghtz...
What will happen is that the games only supporting max 2 cores will destroy for those using Processors with slower cores...
It states the System Specs, should be around 3 Ghtz... But what if the cores only go 1Ghtz ??? The people owning those slower cores wont be able to play the game...
But play Quake/Doom (latest versions) at fast speeds...
Owell, its a twister out there... Everything is just going round and round...he he...

Who cares if it did only use one core out of 8... if the game runs well anyway then there's no problem :) Judge it on the actual performance not some theoretical thing :)

he he...
Its just he way the dice roll... Vegas style...
I mean IF someone buys Quad Core, does the game utilize the 2 cores to the max, does the rest of the cores take care of Windows and other programs ???...
Cant wait for Intel's 80Core CPU's... :)...
BTW will this game use DirectX 8 or just only DX9 ???

In Alone in the Dark 3, while in the graveyard you discover a note in the grave. The Stone over this grave says O.E.J. The note has a simple message "I'll be back!" In your inventory it varifies this note as "A message from One Eyed Jack". So, what are the chances of seeing One Eyed Jack in the future?

Also only 2 more months of waiting to play the game. :D
I cant wait to try out all the bonus including the full soundtrack I wont have to import like I just did for Beautiful Katamari!

will the PC version be compatible with your average USB joystick? (and, on a similar note, will the PC controls be any good? i've played RE:4 and MGS and MGS2, and those games have horrible keyboard controls, they're meant for a controller)
[off topic] greetings from the USA! :D this forum is seriously better than the US forums.... [/off topic]
edit: thought of another question... will there be options to turn off the language/blood etc? i (honestly) don't care too much, but it is something i'm curious about. (also, in a similar vein, any elaboration on what "strong language" means? knowing the ESRB, it can be anything from 1 instance of s*** to 1,000 instances of f***).
OK so just for the slow people like myself I was wondering if Alone in the Dark 5 is a complete game or will be completed trough DLC (like SIN episodes or Half Life 2)?I read everywhere that the game is episodic but that its like a tv show with episodes.Does this mean that the game will be a complete game with each new episode being effectively a new chapter like in other games (making the ame effectively over 8 hours of game play) OR will each new episode be a downloaded item that has to be paid for seperatly? weirdblue Oh BTW i think im the only one that goings to say this but thank for delaying ALone in the dark 5 not just for the extra polish its gonna get,but by the end of June i'm gonna be able to afford the Limited edition :chapeau:
They already answered that - the game is complete out of the box.
Thank you very much sir.Just saw the new trailer on youtube and got goosebumps watching it out of sheer excitement!!! Was just wondering if maybe you could give us a sneak peak of an achievement or two for the Xbox360 version PWEASE :) Oh boy,Limited edition here I come! There is gonna be a limited edition for the Xbox360 version right?

I know this sounds 'awkward' for a game like this but can we complete the game without 'killing' or 'hurting' anyone ?
I would suggest not playing with fire, if you know what I mean.
Having just seen the Fire Tech Demo, I have an inkling that's easier said than done.
As for my questions (bear with me on the first one):
1) How do you avoid monotony in AitD's gameplay approach (from a development standpoint)?
I've seen, read and salivated over glimpses of the impressive setpieces (Jurassic Park 1 & 2 rolled into one scene as you dangle from a rope, swing to freedom and fall down a subway car where glass starts cracking and millions of gamers wet their pants with excitement), but I imagine these moments are used sparingly.
The core "real world rules" gameplay seems downright awesome, but have you taken care to look beyond the obvious puzzle situations (burning/smashing doors, removing wires from electifried puddles of water), changing up the pace and exploring this new technology's rich tapestry of possibilities? Such as placing a source of fire in a dangerous/harder to reach place or including drawbacks to certain gameplay approaches (burning a certain object will bring down an electric wire, complicating your next task, that sort of thing).
It basically boils down to a yes or no question, since I 'm not pining for spoilers. Will there be an adequate amount of variety in the game, especially regarding this technology and its implementation in gameplay? If done right, this game could very well become a modern classic and a source of unlimited fun, as I'm sure is what you're shooting for.
For example, I love Assassin's Creed but was disappointed by the lack of mission variety. The freerunning and crowd control were wonderful mechanics but felt so underused. With a little more imagination (won't say time, because Ubi Montréal took 4 years to make it), they could have been a gameplay canvas, instead of just a fancy, fun way to get around the city and a source of annoyance. I've always hoped Eden would use their technology to the fullest extent and offer variety in environmental puzzles, just so you're not bashing in a door every five minutes or going for same sticky bomb/blood trail mechanic because it's the superior way to pwn enemies.
2) (Falls into the line of my first question)
Will different enemy types require different gameplay approaches?
3) Is the storyline emotional in nature? Will we end up caring about Carnby on some level, or is it more about the suspenseful story? Does the dialogue and voice acting meet the standards of Eden's undeniably impressive ambition? Is there a blatantly obvious plot twist coming? (I like well-done plot twists, but nowadays I've seen too many games were developers think the 6th Sense gimmick should be there because "it would be so cool", instead of relevant to the story. Pardon my scepticism. It's not my intention to be rude.)
4) Is Alone In The Dark essentially still Survival Horror (puzzles, exploring), or is it more action-oriented? Will we be spending more time evading/killing enemies or navigating the environment?
5) Will glass shatter realistically? Will the physics of seemingly simple, one-purpose objects (ropes and the like) have a similar degree of interactivity as metal/wood/...?
6) Will there be multiple endings?
(I hope not since one or the other always seems tacked on. Better to have a fluid, one-piece narrative than a superficial choice at the end.)
7) Will the orchestral song at the end of the very first trailer (Carnby hanging from the gargoyle) be included in the game, or has it been reworked since then in what we've heard in more recent trailers?
I love both, but the first one feels so much more epic. Small detail, but it's part of what got me hyped for the game in the first place.
Well I think I can answer Question 5 I think. The game is certainly based on physics puzzles so obviously the physics system has to be upto scratch.I've read somewhere that Alone in the Dark 5 uses Havok physics V4.5 which is superior to anything in any game before it like Half-life 2 or Crysis. Not sure about that but I hpoe that helped a little.

Thanks for the information, and I definitely appreciate the help, but I'd rather have some sort of guarantee from the development team that the physics system will define the gameplay rather than enhance it with a few nice gimmicks. I'm not expecting the greatest game ever, mind you. My expectations are still realistic. I'm just a bit sceptical about the "revolutionary concept" since the term is used so often by loads of developers to help put their game on the map. Alone definitely looks it will be worth the wait, the hype and the money, but I fear for an overabundance of repetition and monotony in gameplay, much like Assassin's Creed began to irk me later in the game. Save one cloned citizen, saved them all so to speak. That said, I pre-ordered my Limited Edition copy of Alone yesterday. And to think, two days ago, I was still considering buying Dark Sector over this game.

What was wrong with Assassins Creed!?!Am i the only person on the planet that loved that game and has finished it 4 times?(probably because I'm a total Prince of Persia fanboy! :) )Anyway Yeah i've also pre-ordered my version Of Alone 5 after seeing what the Limited Edition box includes on the web and can't wait for the end of June. And to think,at the beginning of this month I was planning on buying GTA IV over this game :atari: You're right when you say that the physics system shouldn't become to repetitive or gimmicky but from what ive seen on the trailers and interviews everywhere I don't think that will be the case. Also its great that they haven't revealed much of the story so that hopefully going to lead to some great moments when its finally released.

I love Assassin's Creed (and I'm also a serious PoP-fan, even loved WW). After BioShock and Mass Effect, it was my GOTY. It's just that I can't play it weeks on end anymore. I've just finished it for the second time, and I bought it on launch (LE for 360). It was extremely hyped for the game, but it lacked the variety and ingenuity to make for a constantly entertaining gameplay experience. However, the story felt like a great Michael Crichton thriller and the core gameplay was relentless fun. But the game couldn't survive on the same sidequests over and over again. It got dull. Maybe it's because I'm (finally) growing up, lol. It's the same way with other games. I just can't obsess or immerse myself in games like I used to. As a result, each flaw stands out twice as much. Especially needless repetition or "filler" material. I have faith in AitD, and am really looking forward to playing it. I also agree that Eden has done a good job keeping the story from us. But I've simply become more skeptical when it comes to "revolutionary" games. Ambition is a wonderful thing, especially in the gaming sector, but it doesn't always prove out. That's why I was asking the team for some assurances that AitD will have plenty of gameplay variety and not just the typical examples (like fire, etc.) they've given already. However, I trusted them enough to order to Alone LE (which looks just plain awesome, by the way). I'm not looking for some new gameplay mechanic around every single corner, though.

something along the lines of what release_15 was saying (not the direction he was going, but i was inspired by his question)
since this is a horror game (as near as i can tell :P ) how much of the horror will be along the lines of the original AitD - atmospheric, relying on the fact that you're a dude trying to survive a seemingly endless horde of zombies - and how much will be shock value - blood, gore, heads being chopped off... stuff like RE:4... because if it's shock value, i'm definitely not getting the limited edition, that stuff never scares me.

Same here, and if memory serves me, I asked that question too, on the previous page. I was concerned about it, but I've contemplated the gameplay, and I don't believe it's the case anymore. I don't expect them to take the gory route. For example, enemies can only be permanently destroyed by fire, and when they are, they kinda dissolve in a "Buffy TVS"-like dust. So I guess it's more about navigating the environment, evading enemies and finding a permanent way to get rid of them than it is about walking along corridors and blowing creepy stuff skyhigh. I don't see Alone as a Resi4 clone. For one thing, the enemies are rumored to be intelligent and vicious instead of slow, zombie-like hordes, and the environmental puzzles really seem to dominate the game, even during combat. Luring them away, keeping them at a distance, etc.
We're getting off the Q&A a bit here, but to me the demo looked most like it was a cross between Bioshock and Half-life 2 in terms of gameplay. The background story sounds like it has a good dose of black horror from the little I've seen though. All combines to be very atmospheric, a great story and have a lot of environment puzzles/monster defeating, not a gore-fest.

I really wish that this game has a worldwide release like GTA or Mgs4 or Spider-man 3. So, will this be possible?? Otherwise I have to wait for atleast 3 months(probably even a year) for this game to release in my country.

Well I live in South Africa and the game is being released here on the end of June just like the rest of the world so I think its pretty safe to say its a worldwide release.Unless you live in the arctic circle or something of course :) Ooh I can't wait to hear open my limited edition and blast that soundtrack all over the house :atari:

Umm...is there going to be any kind of multiplayer? And is there an exact date for the release of the demo?

Nope no multiplayer,it's a straight up single player game. From what I've read (I stand corrected) the demo should be released around launch date,20 June, for the Xbox360 anyway so don't know about the other platforms.

Will there be a special edition for ps3 and what will it include? When will the ps3 version of the game be released. What is the position of Phil Harrison in Atari?Does his transfer to Atari change anything about Atari's thoughts on PS3?Will we see better games or exclusive games for PS3?Why does the PS3 version of AItD release after the other versions? Thanks for answering my questions:-)
Same Question as one over me - will ther be a SPECIAL EDITION for the PS3.
Amazon UK offers a Steelbook for XBOX360 and PC, will there be a Steelbook Version for PS3???
Thanks for any post!
Awesome only a few more days until release!Getting into the whole Central Park atmosphere by driving around "Middle Park" in GTA IV :) Seriously cannot wait for this game!Anyway the PS3 version has been delayed because it's not running like it should(low frame rates, crashing, things like that) so it has been delayed to work on that and don't know when it's being released sorry.I'm pretty sure that the PS3 Limited Edition will be the same as the 360,PC and Wii version(Limited edition box, artbook, soundtrack cd,"making of" DVD,Carnby figurine[SWEET!] and the game obviously).Hope this helps :salut2:

Two more days until I'm picking up my LE 360 copy. Seen a couple of delays for this game, and I wasn't completely hooked until the RWR episodes, but I've been seriously intrigued ever since I saw the first trailer. Epic, wonderful music and gargoyle-grabbing will do that to ya. Judging from this site and forum, it seems like a lot of effort has gone into pre-release feedback, and the delays can only benefit the unbelievably ambitious gameplay and story mechanics. I salute Eden for making me forget about Uwe Boll's movie and the less than stellar New Nightmare. It sure seems like you did a great job guys, and thanks for taking fan feedback seriously. I'll post my impressions after I get my hands on the game.

Q: Are you working on fixing the issues (bugs) that this game has and if so - when do you expect to have the game patched?
Q: Since the PS3-version has yet to be released, does this perhaps mean that it will be more polished than the other ones?

Btw, how often do the staff actually reply in here...?

Which staff? Atari post from time to time, though as you can read elsewhere on the forums the main contributor in the past now has a new job. Eden don't post on these forums, but Atari have in the past taken questions to them and organised player demonstrations with them so you can meet them and ask things yourself.
