I had this exact issue a few weeks ago when I upgraded my 17" CRT (1280x1024) to my new 22" widescreen (1680x1050). Initial intro's would play no problem, but then black screen (but, listen carefully, and you can hear the game is still running).

The way I fixed it, was to backup my profile, then remove it from the My Documents\TDU\savegame folder. This forces the game to run using default options (and of course, you can't continue). (Also note that selecting run in 640x480 in short cut properties didn't work for me, which is why I had to take this long winded approach.)

Then, get a bit of paper and a pen, as you need to write down exactly what keys you need to press (remember, you'll be running blind during the next step) to get to Options, Video, then change from previous resolution to new.

For reference, mine was Up x 2, Enter (into options), Up x 2, Enter (into video), Right x 3, Enter x 2 (to change from 1280x1024 to 1680x1050, and then set it).

Now you know the keys to press, and how many times to press them, restore your backup of your profile, then run the game. DO NOT MOVE THE MOUSE AFTER CLICKING THE ICON. Now, press the keys in the exact sequence you wrote down. If done correctly, you should now be able to see what you are doing again.
