View Full Version : Game engine looks great, but...

I like what I'm seeing in relation to Alone In The Dark, but I must say that I don't like to see throwing arcs in games. For me they spoil the realism and immersion, something the engine and especially this type of game is trying to create. Games shouldn't hand-hold to this degree. Players should be expected to learn how to throw objects accurately. Any sophisticated action like shooting an object in midair should be accomplished via an auto-aim function where the player simply needs to focus on timing the shot correctly. I hope those throwing arcs are removed from the final game, or at least, an option for manual throwing is included.

That demo of a thrown object moving along its arc in slow motion to permit shooting it at a specific point looked soooo fake. Ug.

It's small details like this that could spoil an otherwise great looking game.

Don't forget you were seeing an early version in the demos, I'm sure that's the kind of thing they'll be looking to improve before release.

I certainly hope so. The original Alone In The Dark was the only classic I failed to play in the early 90s. That's why I'm interested in playing the remake. I’m also hoping it will fill the gap left by the absence of Condemned 2 on the PC.

Actually, from what I have seen in the tech demos (which were utmost impressive of course - and I've seen quite a bunch of all kind of tech demos) I think that the game principles that made it into the game are very round-off.

The only thing that disturbed me (and made me laugh) was that when the guy in tech demo 1 slits the oil canister and pours it down the floor it actually looks as if he pees on the floor (due to the angle of the bottle, etc.). Any news on that?

Other than that: perfect work so far. Really impressive engine that makes the game look and act uniquely (unlike other engines). Nice inventory system, and brave decision to allow the players to skip specific episodes of AitD.
