What do you think is the best camera angle to pick for racing games?,personally i like when they add the sort of incar dash and wheel view,it look's nice and for a joypad user i could see this not only being good eye candy so to speak, but also usefull when turning as you would be able to see how much angle and also easier to keep that angle going.

But what about wheel user's?,would the bonnet be the best not only for realism but with this view you would'nt have two sets of hands and two wheels to look at,one being your own and the other being the computer graphic. It's a shame there is'nt an option where you can switch off the in car steering wheel so that you still have the dash etc but there will only be your hands and steering wheel.

I am only asking this as i have never used a wheel before on a racing game and was wondering if the in-car view gets confusing or is it not a problem?.

The only views i have experienced that are of no use are the bumper view and behind car kind of 3rd person view.usually you can tell when other people are using these views, the bumper drivers tend to corner well but have no idea of there surroundings so although they can keep a racing line, tunnel vision prevents them seeing left or right and more often than not, take people out in the process. The behind view type of driver on most cases that i have noticed tends to spend most of the time admiring his rear bumper and more often than not, never hits and apex and often understeers off the track.

So what in your opinion or just happens to be your most usefull camera view, when i use a joypad i go for the interior view, however now that i own a wheel i think bonnet view could be the best option, although i could see this causing problems similar to the bumper view.

FYI, you can turn off the steering wheel in Race 07.

Ahhhhhhh kato, this could be very usefull indeed sir.Did you actually ever turn this off and find it better to concentrate with by any chance?

Forum just lost my post! Gah!

Turning it off does help in terms of concentration as all you can see is the base of the steering column. I don't use a wheel however, so I can't tell you if having another set of arms and a wheel would annoy/break concentration, but I assume it might.

Yes it lost 2 of mine the other day each after the other,in the end i had to copy and paste from word to reply to you lol.

Anyway, turning off the wheel for wheel user's could be a great addition for many gamers.

Of course cockpit view, don't care if the wheel is visible it's still the only view I will use.

IME, you get used to what you use.

But, for a wheel, a view that "puts you in the right place" or at least close to it generally makes sense to me, especially if you drive IRL because then the wheel acts as you expect [hopefully ;) ]

I don't really go for the drawing of a wheel on the screen, because if you want to see a wheel + hands in your peripheral vision, you will see the one you're using :)

But, other views can feel wrong when it comes to steering. Especially chase ones.

I actaully use the bumber cam most. I find the in car view obscures too much of the track.

I really like the outside, closest to the car, But if Im doing career I will use the cockpit view. But for me to set really quick times i need to be on the outside view.

Yes i could definetly see the bumper view really being of use for the likes of fast laps where you are on your own as you dont have to worry about anything comming up from behind or turning in on you.

Yes it seem's like every view does have its advantage aswell as equal downfalls for racing games.Untill we are playing racing games in a sort of modified car shell then each car view with have its problems.

Inside the cockpit if it's their and bonnet/hood if not available. I don't get the whole floating above and behind the car gameplay in a simulation and tbh when you have a room full of people who play like this the racing and communication is very close and you learn to watch your mirrors - or in Forza's case the distance meter - very closely.

I just can't race 20ft above and beyond my car, it feels very disconnected and imo false of the whole simulation experience. I want to know someone is on my right because I hear them not because I see them by floating above them.

I'm the same as Diablo - nothing beats having to listen and watch mirrors to try and get good situational awareness. Adds options to overtaking knowing that your opponent has some angles which are harder to see as well.

Completely agree, I've never been able to race with anything but cockpit or bumper cam.

i agree however the in car view does challenge you to face the same problems a real racing driver might experience. blind spots etc. i always feel though that when driving in real life you have a much better view out of the front windscreen than you ever do in racing games, and have always thought that games should pull the view forward so you see less of the in car view and more of the track. next time any of you are driving or even as a front seat passenger become aware of how much you can see of the inner car without having to move your head and with all due respects to race pro and other games for that matter its nowhere near as much as we have seen in the RP screenshots and videos.

Don't forget race cars usually have the driver further back than a roadcar to give a better centre of gravity and better the weight distribution so the further back view from a racecar perspective is actually more true than it would be with a roadcar.

Very good point indeed Diablo.

good point, even though racing games with standard road cars still have the same problems. mind you i suppose they want us to see the effort they put into creating the interiors.

i would also like to point out the differences between the human eye and a camra lens. i dont know enough about the technicalities all i know is that it isnt as easy as just plonking a camera in the drivers eye position to create a realistic experience to what a real driver sees in real life. its like when you see something on tv you have seen in real life, in real life it just looks so much smaller and nearer, football stadiums, concerts halls etc. i suppose the same applies here. im sure there must be a technical term for this illusion.

cockpit cam all the way for me. I have a better perspective when i use that view, i feel more in control and i am more consistant with it too.

Here is an onboard lap i did on Suzuka yesterday On GT5:P

Field of view. Our eyes actually have a very narrow one, but build up the picture by scanning over the scene up to nearly an hundred times a second.

In GTR:Evo you can adjust this in an ini file to whatever you like, but the default is pretty good and I'm sure they'll pick a good one for Race Pro.

Cockpit all the way for me and on the PC games I usually map the camera left and right view to the thumb buttons on the front of the G25 (always fancied trying out TrackIR though) to keep an eye on the inside line. It'll be interesting to see how this can be handled on the 360 racing wheel.

On the old Papy NASCAR games I'd sometimes drive roofcam on certain tracks as it can give you a bit more awareness of what's going on either side when you're 3 wide in a turn.

I use the in car view, if there is one, mainly for immersion. It's one of the biggest things lacking in Forza. It just feels so sterile with the other cameras.

I wonder which cam view it prefers while it is "driving"
