View Full Version : New to the Series....
Hello ive been playing racing games for years but never a sim, ive pre ordered Race Pro but what can i expect and whats the learning curve like?
With the driving aids on, it's not a lot harder than other 'almost sim' racing games - just as each of them has their own feel of driving so Race Pro will have it's own feel. The difference is that as you learn it you'll realise the feel is actually based on decent physics, which you will naturally start exploiting and generally having loads of fun :p
Then when you start taking off the driving aids at first it might be frustrating, but keep at it - especially try some of the easier cars as there's an amazing difference between types of cars in how they drive. Just staying on the road with less driving aids will help you drive faster when you put them back on, as you'll start understanding how they are cutting in to keep you on the road.
The other thing that might be a bit odd compared to modern games is a sort of lack of other things to do - this game really does put most of it's effort into the actual driving, so it might not be the kind of thing you can actually play for hours on end at first, instead you'll probably prefer dipping in and out, just doing one or two races in a session at most before getting bored/frustrated. But again it'll improve with time, and when you start to master it you'll probably end up doing lap after lap, because it really will reward you when you get something right :p Once you've got the hang of the control racing against other people should be really great too.
Thanks for the reply, i hoped for big things from Forza 2 but i got very frustrated with that game, cars doing things they shouldnt it just didnt feel right to me so i hope Race Pro with better physics will be what im looking for!!:)

i would say check out the threads for the Race Pro videos as well as the other one that shows Simbin videos.. you will see a whole new world!..... IMO
Also, you need to go in with the mind that this isn't just some Need For Speed title, where you choose a car, hit drive and it feels fine. The physics aspect of the game is taken very seriously, so you may need to pick up a few tips on how racing cars are set up, such as steering angle, suspension height, diffuser set up, camber, and what ever other features are included in Race Pro. I remember when I got F1 2001, I thought i could just hit play and I would win races, but I realised my lack of skills back then showed instantly when I started to crash on the first few corners. Once you understand the concept of how to control a real car around a race track, you are good to go with this game.
Also, if you have played Gran Turismo 5, you will get a good idea as well as how to race these cars. So don't blow a fuse, just practice.

Before you play Race Pro, stop playing GRID for at least a day beforehand (preferably NOW!) and forget EVERYTHING that game teaches you.

Indeed.Whilst it may be keeping the boredom at bay untill Race pro official release,if you were to keep playing GRID untill you pop Race pro in the xbox, you may find that you can carry over some nasty habbits into Race pro.
Take a break from it like Tak suggested a couple of days before you start playing Race pro. This way you can start new and fresh.

this was the same for me on forza motorsport. i had got all of the achievements and got bored of it until i decided to join a tournament, so the i went into the ETCC and the longeivity of the game took off! and i am still playing it!
It's well worth joing a community championship like the race world series, tournaments are much more competetive than random lobby races and the points are scored in a proper championship format. There are so many reasons to join!

Sorry if this is a bad repeat but I feel that I am summing up a couple of other peoples points. I wouldn't expect the game to have anything rewarding for you. You're not going to get any cool cutscenes, or unlock f1 cars. The reward will come from you cutting quarter of a second off your lap times, and comparing that to the community. Sim communities are far greater than others (IMO), so remember that when you unpackage race pro and it's free of bells and whistles.

It may sound difficult but my advice to any new gamer to any sort of racer,be it sim or arcade.Turn off those driving assits as soon as you can,no point in learning the tracks with the aids on and then going online only to find none assist racers going much faster than you are.
Switch them off and learn to drive without them straight away, other wise you tend to see players spending months with assists switched on,only to have to learn the game all over again without assists so they can be more competitive.

dead right brako, i played F1 on the PS3 with the racing line on, and i just couldn't turn it off!
every new player should try the game without the assists, and then if they are really struggling then put on TCS if you really can't handle it, but judging by forza's driveability, then ABS and TCS should slow you down anyway ;D

Yes i was the same for a long time Monk,it's crazy too because every racing game i had played over the years never had a brake line yet on Forza it came to the point where i really depended on it,and the more crazyness about it is that when it was on i barely followed it.
In the end i think it became more of a comfort thing rather than actually helpfull but no matter how hard i tried i could not do aswell when it was switched off.

i used to use it on forza because it was an extra reference point for my lines. it made accelerating out of a corner easier and kept me more consistent too ;D

I hope it is rewarding for me as i dont care about cool cutscenes or f1 cars just will take time for me to adjust i think!

Well i am sure your self and the rest of us will get a whole lot of fun out of this game.Yes the learning curve is going to take a while for most users but thats what makes any game fantastic.
Each day i have different ideas of what i want to do first haha,at the moment i am really keen on taking the viper and many other car's around Brands Hatch and the Nurburgring.

I'm looking forward to the nurburgring, when it arrives through DLC (We have to wait ) though I'm not looking forward to the inevitable crashes.

Well crashes will always happen,it just HOW they happen that makes the big difference in being able to enjoy the race,if its a bunch of friendly chaps just having a few private races and a crash happens it's usually because of either a mistake or they both really pushed the car and both came off the worse for it haha, either way no hard feelings are held and even real life drivers have this happen to them.
But when its clearly someone with no care just barging through then thats when games start to become tedious and arguments and abuse start to fly round the lobbies.
Myself personally i take pride in the way i race,if i cause myself to spin out i dont barge my way through the pack to re-gain my old place, instead i just stay clear headed and concentrate on trying to atleast get a reasonable position.Even if i have to finish last,i still get to improve my driving skills on the game as no matter how good you are there is always more ways to improve your skills.
I was just meaning myself, but yes, you are right, that is the way to "Race". If you mess up, you just have to knuckle down, and get on.

looking at the vids it looks pretty hard to take people out, the Ai gets crashed into pretty hard a few times in the vids and unlike forza it doesn't go flying miles off the track into the wall and out of the race.
Looking at that, i would say that the racing will be much closer and you will be able to do a bit of rubbing and bumping in Race PRO, Forza was incredibly difficult to race on as a slight tap sent everyone into the tyres, so hopefully there will be less crashes as a small tap won't result in someone facing 90 degrees to the track stopped on the racine line ;D

I know exactly what you mean there. On Race 07 you can go round corners linked together, one doesn't push the other one off. If you do hit someone in a way that should spin them, they will spin. It enables you to make dives up insides without worrying about the slightest tap. You do still need to be reasonably careful, but the racing should be a lot closer.

Yes i was really impressed with how Simbin had made the wieght of the car's when shunting and what not, very realistic.
