For those of you with a preference for gamepads, what would be the best possible control scheme for Test Drive Unlimited? Bear in mind I'm presently using a Saitek P3200, which closely resembles the Xbox 360 controller.

Do you mean what axis you use for what etc?

It's totally down to personal preference. If it has triggers then I'd put one trigger as accelerate, one as brake, then use one of the joysticks for steering. Set one of the buttons to reset car (if you crash as much as I do ) another one to flash/accept (so you're not stumbling around when you race past a hotpoint to start a race etc.)

Handbrake can be a useful button, as can gear changes.

Agree with Kalniel on this one. There is no magic set-up that will make you suddenly drive better, and what works for me may be completely alien to you. I've got two triggers for accelerator and brake, and two buttons above the triggers for gear up/down. Even now I still move buttons around, for example moving the engine start button away from the window down button. (Hopefully for obvious reasons)
Just experiment, see what suits you best. Don't expect a small change to make a sudden difference, either, it may take a week of practice before the change makes an improvement.
I'm using a Thrustmaster Run 'n' Drive btw, which I've modified somewhat to make it easier to use. This gamepad has a little wheel on it which made the most difference to me. Also means both joysticks are free to allocate to other things. Left joystick moves my in-game head around for example.
