I see this all the time in singleplayer, and even sometimes online, but is there any real upside to riding on the outside of the curb going down the hill on Brands Hatch?
I see the AI force themselves over there sometimes, and I really don't understand it?

nope there is no advantage, if you hit the kerb it will slow you down just like in real life, not by much but you should be able to feel the kerb vibrating the controller and the car slows it's acceleration... the best line through Paddock Hill bend (in the WTCC cars) is to head for the green strip + the cones on the outside and brake later than you think you can, turn in hard when you get close to the green strip and late apex the corner, stay tight and drift out slowly towards the rumble strip without touching it, however if you do go too wide and hit the strip, then simply drive right over it so you are on the light green painted tarmac and re-join the circuit as late as possible before druids without much time loss.

For All, there is a video Hot Lap here with WTCC driver Andy Priaulx, on the Indy circuit:

He commentates the line and gears in car on a wet lap in the Seat.
